Construction has begun on Newton’s newest retail project: The Needham Street Village Shops. A 19,200 square-foot retail development, The Village Shops is marketed as an “important step toward updating the traffic-clogged road into a more pedestrian-friendly shopping district.” According to its website, it will be ready for occupancy in the summer of 2014. The project, located near the intersection with Winchester Street on the former location of International Bicycle Centers and Skipjack’s Restaurant, is hoping to attract a different mix of retail shops than those currently on the street. Special places in Newton Upper Falls: Echo BridgeEcho Bridge spans the Charles River between Newton MA and Needham MA. The bridge is located near the intersection of Route 9 and Route 128. The bridge was built to carry an aqueduct across the Charles River in 1875 by the Boston Water Works. It was used to carry water from the Sudbury River into Boston. Each section of the railing on the top of the aqueduct is cast with “BWW” as a logo.Echo Bridge is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
