News spread quickly through Milton on Wednesday evening that the schoolcommittee voted to restore full-year art classes in all elementary schools.  Parents had raised the issue of the full-year art classes to the school committee at meetings early this Fall.  Parents were dissatisfied that the schools had cut the art classes and many personally contacted the Superintendent to lobby for the return of the classes.  Students will now have art class every other week for the entire school year.

I don’t always do what I know, and sometimes I know what I am not doing, but that doesn’t stop me.  Or should it?  Massachusetts land and housing laws go back for hundreds of years and that is comforting to me. There is a real sense of place and ownership about land and homes that is very American to me.  I do believe home ownership is a privilege open to everyone who is qualified.  Right now those qualifications are very stringent.  That is another story. With ownership comes the pride of that owning.  The time spent taking care of the place and fixing things and repairing them.  The design and updates you put in to your specific tastes might not be of as much value as you place on it, but it was in there for you and you did enjoy it.  Plant a tree, then you can watch it grow and be be...

On Wednesday, the Milton High marching band will play at a pep rally.  It is the day before the Thanksgiving football game.  The pep rally concert will be the last time the band plays this season.  Milton had a marching band in the late 80s, but lack of student participation made the administration end the program.  The band was reborn this year and has had a successful season. For details, contact the Milton High school.

Parents should take note of a great presentation on the dangers of bullying planned for Tuesday evening, November 9, at the Milton High School auditorium.  The presentation starts at 7 p.m. and will feature Professor Gregory Hall of Bentley College.  Professor Hall will review recent Massachusetts laws on bullying and present real life stories from students who were victims of bullying. It is expected that after the presentation, parents will form groups to discuss bullying for their respective grades, such as elementary, middle and high school. Milton is fortunate to have an active school system that reaches out to the community to discuss important topics to a wide-ranging audience.  All parents are invited, including private and parochial school families.

I was just at an open house of a For Sale By Owner (FSBO) in my area. I go to all these open houses. I am curious how these non-professionals are marketing their properties. I am also interested to see what they disclose and what they don't disclose. I am sure you would guess that usually there are some egregious mistakes. But this is not what I am writing about. What I have found almost universally is that none of the FSBO people use regular real estate marketing tactics at all. They all want to tell a story about their house. They all want to let you know how much their family has loved the house and it is just too small for them now, or that they have been transferred to another area/state/universe. (all right I am kidding about being transferred to another universe, but FSBO's are f...

I have been lucky enough to have interviewed some of the most successful people in business over the years.  I have always been fascinated with what makes people tick.  How they do what they do to get the results that they get is instructive to me.  I know that is why I named my company YourStorys and changed it to YourStorys Realty when I began to focus all my energy only on the real estate industry a while ago.  I have found the most successful agents and brokers to be open and honest people.  There is a tier below them who also have achieved success of sorts, but tend to be secretive and distant.  Personally I want to help as many people as I can achieve at their highest level as I make daily efforts to do the same for myself and the agents around me.  I have little to no respect for...

My trip through the mine fields of real estate this year is about to take a very wonderful turn.  Have you ever taking a dive into a really deep pool and gone all the way to the bottom.  The quietness is one thing, but the pressure of the weight of the depth pushes in on you, and that is another thing.  Well I hit the bottom of that pool in TX and swam my way back to MA.  Right now I feel as though my feet are firmly planted on the bottom and I am launching myself skyward back up into the stratosphere.  Persistence has been my ally all along the way.  My goals have never wavered even when roadblock after roadblock were set up to thwart the path. This week I re-read Chapter 7 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.  In this groundbreaking book of research into the habits, skills and tec...
