As reported in the News-Star this week, home prices in the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area grew about 3 percent in 2010. Artist George Rodrigue is featured in the exhibit, Blue Dogs and Cajuns: George Rodrigue from the New Orleans Museum of Art, which opened Friday at the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe.  The exhibits run through April 23. George and Wendy Rodrigue will be in Monroe Tuesday, April 4, for several museum events which are free and open to the public. Tuesday afternoon, Rodrigue will be at the Emily P. Robinson Community Center for the Children's Drop-In Activity from 3:30-4:30 p.m. to make a sidewalk chalk mural with them. The event will be held rain or shine. A gallery talk and book signing will be held Tuesday evening at the museum. A reception will be from 6-7 p.m. with the gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. A merger between CenturyLink Inc. and Qwest Communications International Inc. was completed Friday, creating a communications company with a geographic coverage of 681,000 square miles, second only to AT&T.   Friday's merger will more than double the size of CenturyLink. It will now have local operations in 37 states and enterprise and long-distance business in all 50 states. Through the merger, CEO Glen Post said the company gained access to opportunities with large businesses and Fortune 500 companies and created a "national footprint." The company's headquarters will remain in Monroe with Post as its CEO, and its economic impact on the area will likely increase. "There is an opportunity to add jobs here," he said. Georgia Tucker Elementary School is the oldest existing elementary school in Monroe.  The school was built in 1920 on land donated by Colonel Frank P. Stubbs in honor of his mother, Georgia Tucker Stubbs.  The school is one of the last remaining examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture in northern Louisiana.  The architecture style came into prominence in the 1920s and 1930s evolving from rekindled interest in Italian Renaissance palaces and seaside villas dating from the sixteenth century.  This style is primarily found in California and Florida, typically multi-story and based on a rectangular floor plan, and features massive, symmetrical primary facades.  Tile roofs, arches and keystones are also characteristics of this style.  All the features can be seen in the architecture o...

CenturyLink deal may benefit Monroe Regional Airport The News Star, By Stephen Largen • slargen@monroe.gannett.com • August 18, 2010 Monroe Regional Airport could have direct commercial flights to and from Denver if the Monroe Chamber of Commerce gets its wish. The chamber is interested in service to Denver because of anticipated increased demand resulting from Monroe-based CenturyLink's acquisition of Denver-based Qwest Communications. CenturyLink, Monroe's signature company and one of Fortune 500's largest U.S. companies, announced it would acquire Qwest earlier this year. The companies anticipate closing the transaction in the first half of 2011.
