You may think that the biggest race in Louisville is the Kentucky Derby held each May, but the first weekend in October each year holds a race of its own. For the past 56 years, the St. James Court Art Fair in Old Louisville has drawn in artists and is considered the best art show in the nation by some. Every year it draws 750 artists from around the country and over 300,000 people. Popular as the St. James Fair is, for the past 13 years, 20 local artists have staged a competitive fair in the parking lot of the Magnolia Bar. Started in protest of the high $450 entrance fee for artists at the St. James Fair, the Unfair draws a smaller crowd of fiercely loyal fans and features local artists. Though the events are staged on a completely different scale, 30,000 readers of the Louisvill...

Old Louisville is a part of the city that doesn't receive as much attention as the Highlands, but is similar in that it is a quaint part of Louisville that offers a lot of history. It has yo-yo'd from an area where only the wealthiest in Louisville could live, to a period of decline and now into an up and coming area. Contrary to the name, Old Louisville is actually not the oldest part of Louisville at all! The area wasn't even developed until about a century about Louisville was founded and was where country estates and mansions were built for wealthy Louisvillians. Unfortunately, the area began to decline as new areas were developed such as Cherokee Triangle. Additionally, after the Ohio River Flood of 1937 many residents chose to move above the flood plain to higher ground. ...
Old Louisville has hit the news lately, due to a proposed new ordinance which permits live music in the western section of the neighborhood near 7th and Oak Street. Lest you think Old Louisville is a dead and archaic part of town, think again. This small area near Limerick is currently zoned residential, but Old Louisville is home to many restaurants, bars, and coffeehouses that offer live music as part of their ambiance. The ordinance, needs approval from Mayor Greg Fischer, opens up many new opportunities for the neighborhood. Dan Driskell, president of the Old Louisville Chamber of Commerce is excited that about the prospect of new nightlife in the area. Old Louisville is a National Preservation District, the third largest in the nation, and the largest Victorian district in the ...

Nature is art, all we need to do is notice and appreciate. Oh, also carry a camera and be ready to shoot. It's almost unfair that I can take 10 seconds to capture this composition that nature placed in front of me, but an artist of first rate caliber would have to toil days or weeks to conceptualize such a dynamic design and then masterfully put it canvass. Captured by Dave Halpern on South Floyd Street in Old Louisville, Louisville KY. Old Louisville is in the process of gentrification.
On the first weekend of October, Louisville residents in search of a good time had the choice of several popular fairs to visit, including the the St. James Fair in Old Louisville. Since 1957, when the neighborhood was in shambles, the fair has attracted visitors to a humble celebration of the neighborhood, where art was displayed on clotheslines that ran for tree to tree. Now the fair has been considered the best art show in the nation by Sunshine Magazine in recent years and draws 750 artists and 300,000 people. Over the years, proceeds from the fair have aided neighborhood restoration. For the past 13 years, a competing event, the Unfair, has been held in the parking lot of the Magnolia Bar. The artists are local and more avant guard. About 20 "starving artists" who cannot or do not ...
