I have always liked the classic look of white beadboard - but I made a mistake installing it in my powder room. It comes up about halfway up the wall and lines the area behind the sink.  I apparently never considered the effect that splashing water would have on the wood beadboard as you can see here (and this was repainted about a year ago): While reading an article, "8 Easy and Cheap Things You Can Do to Transform Your Bathroom," I came across the idea of using beadboard made from cellular PVC (essentially a synthetic plastic polymer) that is water resistant, priced well, and never needs to be painted. It's easy to find - a quick Google search shows that it can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowe's, or many other hardware or home remodeling stores.Of course, just about everything can be ...

Should You Use the Same Agent to Buy and Sell a House? UPDATED 2019Yes! If you have a relationship with your agent, it's normal to have that person list your home and help you find a new home. As long as you are moving within the same geographical area, I see no problems with that scenario. No! When you are moving from, say, Chicago to Winnetka. There could be some inherent troubles with agents not being familiar with your new chosen town.I was asked today if I would work for a couple who would like to sell their condo in Chicago and help them buy a new home in one of the North Shore communities like Winnetka, Wilmette, or Glenview. They wanted the same agent to handle both sales. My answer was that I would be thrilled to help them buy a home here - but that I would not be their best cho...

UPDATED 2019 Today, most good agents use professional photographers to take the pictures of their listings.  The color is balanced, they are sharp, and they always show so much of each room.  Wide angles lenses allow more of the scene to be included in the photograph. They ideally work for interior situations when the photographer cannot walk backwards far enough to get the whole picture. Sometimes a very small space can look deceivingly spacious, thus disappointing the prospective buyer who had pored over all the online photos. But that's not what I'm talking about when I say the real estate phtographs lie.  Using a wide-angle lens distorts and exaggerates, but most savvy buyers understand that nowadays.     Not the home I showed, but you get the idea What if the deception is done on pu...

The last month we have had so much fun attending the Wilmette IL Thursday Night Concerts at Plaza del Lago. It is a free event and something we have been going to for years now. You bring a chair or just dance the night away. This is one musical event that people really look forward to and if you do not know about this it is not too late to check it out. The village of Wilmette puts on this concert and the local stores sponsor it and do a fantastic job.You can get great food, there are so many restaurants that serve just about anything you would ever have a taste for and then you boogie from 6pm until 8 pm. The wide variety of different bands playing is great. I have always enjoyed myself and bet you would too. People of all ages attend this musical event to celebrate the Summer in the ...
