Okay so it's not a board meeting like you expect.  In Hawaii when we hit the surf I like to call them board meetings. You get together with attorneys, Realtors, Joe The Plumber and everyone else hitting the first shift in the surf.  So I paddled out early this morning.  The swell dropped but I always enjoy the work out and catch a few small waves.  The early shift has all the regulars in the line up, bakers, Maui News night shift just getting off work.  Maui locals really enjoy embracing the ocean.  Water sport on Maui is part of your daily activity.  Maybe a early surf session before work.I try to get a couple windsurf sessions in during the week.  With windsurfing on Maui you have a different crowd.  You have professionals that take a break in their day, or at the end of the day when ...

Okay it is Sunday morning and I have to head to Wailea by  10 o.clock to work on Papali Wailea project.  Before I head to work I am going to grab a cup of coffee and head to Hookipa Beach Park on Maui northshore for a surf check. So when I pull up it's looking pretty fun.Looks good I am out there. Here is a shot of a friend of mine. There was lots of waves to be had. Well time to get home and get ready for work. One last look.Living on Maui is all about lifestyle.  While we work hard at what we do, in my case a Maui Realtor, I love windsurfing and  surfing when ever the conditions are good. Here I am getting a morning surf.So it's time to hit the road for Wailea. A quick stop for a cup of coffee is a good thing. It was such a clear day I thought I would get a shot of the sugar cane mill. I love the different colors in this Maui sunset sky.  When they are burning sugar cane you get a blood red. This shot is just beautiful  from a couple nights ago.  This is setting over the West Maui mountains. I was going brain dead with the prices of gas.  Now I am excited to see $4.12 gallon. What if it drop below $4 gallon.  It's amazing how we come to accept change and I would have been appalled if I ever thought I was going to pay $4.12 gallon.  There is all kinds of change we are experiencing now.  Will we be paying higher taxes as a result of the bailout.  At first we might scream a little bit but in the long run it becomes a way of life. The world is changing around us like never before.  So in a changing world today I am going to hang on to the good things in life that make you happy. Don't let change rip you off. Yes we need to adjust the way we live, but not who we are. So today is a great day.  I am going to fill my tank up at $4.12 gallon and life if good.   Steven Nickens R(S) G...

A few months back, I found out about a website called Walk Score. The site allows you to plug in an address and it assigns a walkability score based on the addresses' proximity to amenities such as grocery stores, libraries, schools, restaurants etc. It is a great tool and a valuable asset to those that want to find a property that allows you to reduce your reliance on a car. The one issue I noticed with walk score was that the best results were skewed towards the big cities. That makes sense. If you plop yourself down in the Center of Times Square, chances are you will find every type of shop, restaurant and/or community service within a half dozen city blocks. There is certainly something to be said about the green nature of urban living. That being said, not everyone is seeking city ...

Throughout the country, the change in season is clear. Leaves are turning on the trees, temperatures are falling with the leaves, and the days are growing shorter. Closer to the equator, the sense of seasons is less pronounced. Our average temperatures tend to vary only ten degrees a year. While we have some trees that lose their leaves, the vast majority keep their foliage year round. The days are growing shorter, but our variation in daylight between summer and winter is less drastic. That being said, the season changes are there if you turn on your senses. Today the change in seasons were as clear as a a bell along Maui's North Shore.I first noticed the change during the middle of the night. I woke to hear a sound that I had not heard since the beginning of last spring. The sound was...

It looks like we are going to get our first real winter swell of any size today. I was talking to my son Micah this morning and he said it should be building up  to ten foot today. If you are measuring mainland style that would be 20ft faces.  He has his jet ski out getting tuned up for winter action. While I enjoy the surf and overhead waves are fine till I am getting to pounded.  My son and his friends enjoy charging big surf. My son Micah has lived on the Northshore of Oahu and surfed Pipeline and backdoor every day.  That has tuned his skills at tube riding. His friends love Jaws.  Ian Walsh one of his beat friends flys all over the world to find the biggest waves in the world to tow into.  My son is threatening to take me out towing so I think this winter I will try it before I get ...

Okay here is an interesting idea.  First let me tell you about my day.  I was in Kahului Maui this morning picking up some new seeds for my garden before the day started at Lowe's.  I ran into a contractor friend and he was telling me what a hit he took in the stock market the last few days.    A few nights earlier I was having dinner with an older client friend of mine visiting in town.  Same story of how his life saving was taking a serious hit.  I can't tell you how many people have mentioned the same thing. So I was thinking that buying dirt always has long-term staying power. By dirt I mean real estate.  It goes up it goes down but it doesn't go away.  So this morning a travel agent friend of mine called to chat.  Same story but she mentions that with people pulling money out of t...

Who's on First?   Every where you go people are looking for answers.  You have people that you casually know coming up to you and asking what going on in the market and will we be okay.  I finished work yesterday and headed down to Kanaha Beach for an evening windsurf session.  When I was derigging my sailboard after a session. A group form Hood River Oregon was talking about when it will be safe to buy real estate again.  Being the Realtor I am I jump into the conversation. Their feeling were middle of next year is going to be the opportunity to catch the bottom.   As the financial guru Warren Buffet says it's a great time to buy when people are running scared. Okay what ever.  What I am seeing is people that are afraid for their future. The want to work and pay their bills.  I do thin...

On the last Saturday of every month, the Paia Youth and Cultural Center (PYCC) hosts a beach clean up. The PYCC is located along the shores of Paia Bay in beautiful Paia, Maui. Not only does PYCC provide a great space for Maui's kids, the staff does a wonderful job of instilling a respect for the environment among its members. Today, PYCC had a special clean up that streched from Baldwin Beach Park back to the beach around the Youth Center. The clean up drew sponsorship and increased participation through the Humbol Company. Quite a Haul! The kids and adult volunteers did a great job picking up trash not only on the beach, but in the Baldwin Beach parking lot and in the bushes and trees located off the beach. The beach produced lots of small items like bits of plastic, bottle caps and c...

Here's a quick fly over of Maui's north shore, from Ho'okipa Beach Park to Kanaha Beach (east to west).  It's short and sweet, with a nice Hawaiian soundtrack "Home in the Islands".  Yes, it really is this beautiful almost every day of the year.  If this doesn't make you want to get over here for a vacation, then I don't know what to say.   For more Maui north shore info and pictures, you can search through this blog and others.  When you're ready to make the move to Maui, please let me be your guide....  Georgina M. Spreckelsville is a community on Maui's North Shore located between the towns of Kahului and Paia. It has a Paia mailing address, but is located in the Kahului school district. It has long been valued by both Kama'aina and visitors alike for its combination of natural beauty, convenience, acccess to world class ocean sports, and the presence of arguably the world's most laid back country club. You can walk to three separate beaches. Baldwin Beach is a great white sand walking beach. The western most end of the beach has a reef roughly ten yards off shore that extends above the waterline. This creates a sheltered area out of the brunt of the wave energy. The calmer, protected, shallow waters have led this area to be dubbed as Baby Beach.  Sugar Cove is small beach that is often sheltered...

Are you getting hungry?   Where to eat in Paia,  Haiku,  Makawao,  Pukalani and Kula! PAIA RESTAURANTS If you're on Maui and thinking about where to eat, I have a website that will help.  Paia town has many great restaurants, as well as stores where you can buy food to go.  Mana Foods, the health food store, has a great deli and salad bar, which I frequent often.  For a really good fish dinner, we always like to go to the Paia Fish Market and get the Seafood Caesar Salad, with mahi mahi.  Dining is informal and family style on long tables and benches, so you can meet other diners.  It's usually pretty busy in there, so be prepared to stand in line to order.  At the top end of the price scale I would recommend Mama's Fish House Restaurant (pictured), if money is no object!  They are situ...

It is perhaps the most renowned windsurfing site in the world, The waves here are largest during the winter, and break across a system of reefs that extend across the bay. During the summer the waves are smaller. Ho'okipa is ideal for windsurfing because of its large well-shaped waves and strong winds. The name Ho‘okipa means "hospitality" in Hawaiian. While ever-present strong winds and powerful currents do not make the beach a place for beginners, experienced surfers and windsurfers continually flock to Ho'okipa for b...

Okay I am a proud Papa. My oldest son Micah is getting married this weekend. This a Maui boy born and raised. He has been a pro-surfer most of his adult life. He has traveled all over the world and surf some pretty scary waves. My other son Nate and daughter flew in last night from Calif for the event. I am so glad to have my family together.  The first thing I am going to do after this cup of coffee is kick my boys out of bed and head down to Hookipa Beach park  for a morning surf. I was once told by a good friend that passed away that a rich man is a person that is blessed with a great family. So this morning I am feeling pretty blessed. My quiver is being expanded with a beautiful new daughter in law. Well gotta go hit the water and then off to work. Later AR Proud Papa

Super Ferry Heading to Maui with new fuel efficient car       I am sitting on the Super Ferry heading home to Maui. We are passing by Honolulu as I am typing as we pass by Diamond Head.  The sun is rising over Diamond Head and it is another Brilliant day in paradise. My journey started some months back when I ask Active Rains opinion on what car they liked for fuel efficiency.  I was driving my VW Toureg from Haiku to Wailea every day.  Gas prices are $4.59 gallon on Maui.  With oil prices dropping they haven't drop gas prices on Maui.  So after gathering information on a smaller more fuel efficient car with comfort for my clients.  I came up with another VW the Passat.  Getting up to 30 miles a gallon and enjoying a luxury ride.   So I threw caution to the wind and sold my Toureg.  Tha...

I know everyone has been following the Olympics.  They have been amazing from opening ceremony's to Michael Phelps to the women's volleyball.  There is a sixteen year old girl who in my mind is a real champion.  Shawn Johnson who competes in gymnastics.  At home and in the world events this girl just kills it. She was a gold medal favorite going into the Olympics.  The thing is she kept making little errors and kept ending up with Silver medals. So how did she handle not getting the Gold. Her attitude is something we need to look at real close. Under pressure she look for the silver lining in the events.  Her attitude was I am here at the Olympics and I am going to enjoy every moment. Also she mention that there was something to be learned from her situation.  So she just keep on smilin...

The Dollar is Back!   The dollar is back as global market fears rise.  The Euro was said to be 30% over valued and now we are seeing the rest of the world markets looking to the dollar for a safe place.  With the rise of the dollar we are seeing oil per barrel dropping to $113 barrel.  Haven't seen the effects of cheaper oil in Maui. Motivated by a stronger dollar, foreign markets look to dollar as the Pound and the Euro are slipping. So how will this affect the US housing market, we will see.  For the foreign buyer his cash becomes a little weaker as the dollar gains momentum.  So this is a good time for foreign buyers to step up to the plate for Maui real estate or other business or vacation destination. With the demand in the US for cutting back on gasoline and conserving energy ther...
