I finally had the chance yesterday to get down and see the Ossipoff exhibition at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.  For those of you that don't know, Vladimir Ossipoff was the most renowned architect in Hawaii in the 20th Century.  He was born in Russia, raised in Japan and schooled at UC, Berkley.  He passed away in 1998 after a career spanning six decades! The reason for the display was this year marked what would have been his 100th birthday.  I've heard so much about him over the years.  His work included both residential and commercial designs.  There are just too many too name.  Some of his noted works were the Honolulu International Airport, the IBM Building, the McInerny Building in Waikiki, the Chapel at Hawaii Preparatory Academy on the Big Island, and the Chapel at Punahou Schoo...

First of all, I would like to say Happy New Year! I am really excited about 2008.  Every RE/MAX Realtor will be "Reaching for the Sky", some literally and some figuratively.  Dave Liniger, the founder of RE/MAX predicts this year will be real similar to 2007 on the national level.  However, locally Oahu still seems to defy national housing statistics.  We are one of a few select markets including San Francisco and New York where prices have held strong over the past year.  The reason: Demand still outstrips Supply.  There is only so much land in all 3 markets mentioned.  The tough thing about moving to Hawaii from some of the slower markets on the mainland is that those markets are slower.... I now have 4-5 clients that are "ready and able" to purchase here "as soon as they sell" anothe...

Hawaiian Electric Co. is making available, free of charge to any interested wind energy developer, data collected about wind conditions and bird activities in the Kahuku area of Oahu's North Shore."While it is unusual for a package of valuable data to be offered for free, we want to do all we can to help encourage more renewable energy in Hawaii," says Karl Stahlkopf, Hawaiian Electric's senior vice president of energy solutions and chief technology officer. "This is especially important on Oahu, where we have the most customers but lack availability of some of the renewable resources found on the Neighbor Islands - such as geothermal and run-of-the-river hydro. Hawaiian Electric has diligently pursued wind resource assessment on Oahu, and we want to share the data."The initial package ...

The Honolulu Advertiser released the news Nov. 8 that the city has begun work on the Hawaii Kai Dog Park, at the corner of Keahole Street and Kalaniana'ole Highway. They are clearing the boundaries and will start putting up fence posts by mid-November. The non-profit group Hui'ilio Hawai'i has been working on the project and raising funds for three years. They formed a private-public partnership with the city of Honolulu, which requires the city to clear the land, install irrigation and fencing. The non-profit will provide the fence material, benches, and some landscaping. While the grass will take a few months to grow in strong enough to withstand all those pounding paws, dogs and Hawaii Kai residents alike hope for an opening in the Spring. To contribute to the dog park through the n...

The market in Hawaii Kai, on the east end of Oahu, continues strong. As of Nov. 2, 116 single family homes were available, 24 under contract, and 126 sold in the last six months. The sales range from $590,000 to $15,900,000. More homes are listed between $1,200,000-$1,999,999 than at other prices, 42 as of today, but numbers of sales in that range trailed the less expensive homes, those under $1,000,000. For condos, there are 83 active listings, from $389,000 to $1,248,000, 23 under contract, and 150 sold in the last six months. The sales range from $300,000 to $1,400,000. There is a wide variety of price ranges, but also of style, age, size, and location. Waterfront brings the highest price, water view next, and no view the least. But in Hawaii Kai, you are only 5 minutes from the wate...

Two evenings ago (Halloween evening), I was in Honolulu and trapped in traffic.  Where did all these people come from?  I felt like I was in Manhattan or downtown Chicago during rush hour.  Intersections were grid locked.  It took me 2 hours to go a reasonably short distance.                    I had appointments in town and then was going to catch a quick dinner with a good friend to avoid the rush hour traffic home. When I finally met up with my friend for dinner he suggested we try to go to Waikiki and watch the Halloween crazies.  So after fighting our way in and finding the one in a million parking stall, we decided to go to the front of the International Market Place.                  For the next couple of hours we saw a sea of people.  I had heard that Halloween was a big deal in...

I've discovered some great live web cams available online for our island. Visit http://www.honolulu.gov/cameras/index.htm. You can watch the tourists in Waikiki in two different locations, accompanied by music, traffic congestion hot spots, Honolulu traffic cameras, and live webcasts of the Honolulu City and County Council meetings. If you get tired of snow and cold this winter, try http://www.honolulu.gov/multimed/waikiki.asp, watch the waves break and dream of white sand beaches in Hawaiian Paradise. Should these webcams make you dream of owning a hideaway in Waikiki, or anywhere on Oahu, give me a call or email. I'll help you find your special home in the Islands. Enjoy! Data Current September 2007Portlock is one of the most beautiful and expensive neighborhoods on the island! Beachfront homes in Portlock are favored for their lack of CCRs and spectacular sunset views of Diamondhead. The Portlock area encompasses both the odd and even sides of Portlock Road and a small part of the Kalanianaole Hwy, past Keahole St, just SE of where the Kaupa Pond meets the ocean (in the 6000-7000 blocks of the Hwy). In Portlock, there are many gorgeous, newly constructed large-sized (4k+sq ft) island-style homes, usually on lots 11,000-20,000 sq ft, and some older (late 40's early 50's) Kama'anina homes, with square footage in the mid-2000s, as well. Prices on Portlock Road range from about $1.9M to $18M, with most of the homes in the $2.5-$6M range. (c) 2007, Yvonne Ma...
