December 30th, 2009 categories: Rants & Riffs I love the simplicity of this vintage home.  It needs some paint, but it’s a classic.  Again, this one is located in Manoa which seems to the location of many of these houses. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ENTIRE POST.

We boarded the Star of Honolulu for the  Honolulu Sunset Dinner Cruise and we were on our way out into the open sea by 5:30pm yesterday evening. We started with a beautiful romaine salad and a tiny loaf of taro bread...and then out I went to the deck to snap some shots. With a sun setting over open seas with a view ‘to die for' of Diamond Head and Waikiki and a lovely dinner with entertainment like hula, Tahitian and other dances with a wonderful dinner  it has surely been another memorable time for Gary and I. We had gone on this same cruise 8 years ago...the day after we got married. Both of these thoughtful gifts were from my daughter.  One thing is for certain...no matter what the occasion this cruise is a romantic one indeed. Enjoy the pictures and the video too...it will surely in...

The 13th Annual Festival of Lights Boat Parade was held last Saturday in the Hawaii Kai Marina.  Thousands came from all over Oahu to watch because the Hawaii Kai Marina is unique - as the heart of a residential area - and the only marina on the island with a boat parade. 42 boats entered, a record, and competed for cash prizes donated by Hawaii Kai merchants and businesses.  Music was provided by the trio, Maunalua, and a hula danced by Ka Hale I o Kahala Halau Hula.  The Festival of Lights Boat Parade was sponsored by the Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association and co-sponsored by Koko Marina Shopping Center and Hale Alii in Hawaii Kai.  Photos will be posted soon on the Hawaii Kai Marina site.  The above is courtesy of Examiner.com.  This was John Gravener's 17-foot Maxum with the "M...

The Honolulu Marathon was held last Sunday, and for the second straight year, Patrick Ivuti took commanding charge of the race.  Ivuti, 31, successfully defended his men's title in the 26.2-mile event with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 14 seconds, nearly a minute in front of countryman Nicholas Chelimo, who finished in 2:13:10. William Chebon followed in third place (2:14:59) and six-time winner Jimmy Muindi finished fourth (2:17:17), as the Kenyan contingent took the top five places. After setting a blistering early pace and running off the race "rabbits" and his main rivals, Ivuti faltered a bit in the final 8 miles but still managed to record the sixth-fastest time in race history.  With the race-time temperature at a cool 68 degrees and trades barely blowing, the elite Kenyan co...

December 3rd, 2009 categories: Honolulu Real Estate 101 The Chicago Tribune is reporting that mortgage interest rates have hit an all-time low. “The average interest rate for a 30-year mortgage dropped to a record low of 4.71 percent this week, pushed down by an aggressive government campaign to reduce borrowing costs. The rate, published Thursday by Freddie Mac, is the lowest since the mortgage finance company began tracking the data in 1971. The previous record of 4.78 percent was set during the week ending April 30 and matched last week.” CLICK HERE TO READ THE ENTIRE POST. What does this mean for Honolulu home and condo sales? December 2nd, 2009 categories: Honolulu Real Estate 101, Rants & Riffs I haven’t seen anything posted by the Honolulu Advertiser or Honolulu Star Bulletin regarding the recently released November Honolulu Board of Realtors statistical report, however, it is going to be fun to read how they spin the information.  From my perspective, it is the best report that I have seen in over a year. Other than a miniscule drop in the median sales price of houses, all of these numbers look great! Below is a summary of the salient statistics. CLICK HERE TO READ THE ENTIRE POST

December 1st, 2009 categories: Rants & Riffs Realtors not only sell homes, but we are one of the prime protectors of private property rights.  The Supreme Court’s “Kelo” decision of 2005 opened the door for government to take private property for private use and now a decision in New York relies on this case to take land for a new NBA arena. November 30th, 2009 categories: Honolulu Real Estate 101 Many Honolulu Realtors, sellers and buyers take most or part of the month of December off from actively working in the real estate market.  I have always thought that this is a mistake.  December can be a very good month for both buyers and sellers. Here are the opportunities. For Buyers 1.  Many sellers take their properties off of the market during the holidays. Some of the sellers that are on the market are seriously motivated.  Therefore, a December buyer may be able purchase a home or condo at terms that are favorable to the buyer. I found a great site, Sugar Mill Vet Center on St Croix, which furnishes links for pet owners.  Since many parents consider giving the gift of a pet for Christmas - but pets are also being "donated" in the thousands to shelters nationwide because of owners' financial difficulties - here are some sites which will give you more information and help you consider the needs of our furry best friends. November 23rd, 2009 categories: Honolulu Real Estate 101 Until I read a recent article in the Honolulu Star Bulletin, I would have told you that crime in Honolulu is higher than it used to be (not that it was bad).  This may be because murder, mayhem, child abduction and their ilk are splashed across headlines in newspapers, radio and TV.  In my case, I have not had any significant exposure personally to issues related to crime, but my gut told me there is more crime now.  The Star Bulletin reported the following. “Crime in Hawaii has fallen to its lowest level since data collection started in 1975, with theft and murder rates plunging over the past decade.” CLICK HERE TO READ THE ENTIRE POST.
