Harvesting Bananas on Maui You might have wondered... how do bananas grow?  How do you get them down off the tree?  Did you know that there is no woody tissue in a banana plant?  The "trunk" is more like the consistency of rolled up corrugated cardboard, and very juicy... sort of like celery. They grow in a clump with many stalks at different stages, so there's always a mature stalk or 2, and some younger ones, and also some keikis - little ones just coming up.  Again think celery or rhubarb.  You know there are no seeds to speak of, so they are propagated by removing the keikis and planting them.  It takes about a year from planting to full growth.  Very easy to grow here in Haiku, by the way. When the bunch is just starting to turn yellow, that's when you want to cut the bananas down....

Fresh Maui Gazpacho I am just digging the hell out of fresh garden gazpacho this summer.  It's the best thing for lunch on a hot summer day - chilled vegetable soup.  My mom turned me onto it as a kid and I got a chance to try some in Spain when visiting there a few years back.  My husband is a big fan too, so no hu-hu. Here's my version of this classic cold soup.  Recipes usually call for beef stock or consomme for the liquid, and I have used that in the past for a very good flavor.  Something about cold beef soup just kind of creeps me out though, so I usually use a can of V-8 or some Clamato Juice (attention Canadians - you know what I'm talking about here). You can break it down to 4 parts - chunks, herbs, liquid and seasonings.  Use whatever ingredients appeal to you, and season t...

ORGANIC GARDENING IN HAIKU MAUI HAWAII I couldn't resist sharing some of my garden produce with you.  This year has been a really good one for gardening in Haiku - plenty of sunshine and lately, enough rainfall to make things grow without watering. Despite hot weather and the usual bugs, there's still plenty to go around: cherry tomatoes Kawelo tomatoes Hawaii supersweet corn broccoli cauliflower kale bell peppers Italian relleno peppers habanero peppers - 2 kinds! Hawaiian chili peppers many kinds of lettuce mizuna herbs sugar peas pole beans Chinese celery green onions carrots cucumbers sunflowers     The first corn crop looked like a disaster, due to lack of water, but in the end we had more than a few corn feeds. The second corn crop has just started to tassel and we expect to have ...

I was out at our new listing in Haiku yesterday. I had my camera with me and snapped some pictures of some of the fruit and flowers that I saw when I was walking around the property. As you come down the driveway, you go past a few big mango trees. It has been a banner year for mangoes. The ground below the trees was covered with ripe and over ripe mangos. There were also a few beautiful looking fruit hanging from the trees. The sellers have planted the area above their cottage with a variety of fruit, vergetables and flowers. As I was walking up the stair case from the cottage to the parking area, I was impressed by the bromeliads. I had to stop and get a close up of one of the more striking flowers. The flower almost looked like it was from another planet. Maui is such a beautiful lan...

Door of Faith Road in Huelo - Haiku Maui Hawaii 96708 Huelo is on the north shore of Maui, and it's a sparsely populated region that's mainly agricultural. GOOGLE MAP of HAIKU Downtown Haiku Maui post I don't think this is the official name for the road, but it's what everyone calls it.  If you're driving on the Hana Highway (the road to Hana), you'll see this row of mailboxes and the pay phone on your left, at about the 3.5 mile marker.  There is no street sign, you just have to know where you're going.  I believe the name comes from one of the churches that is at the beginning of this ocean-side road.  There are actually 2 churches near the top of the Door of Faith Road: Door of Faith Church; and Kaulanapueo Church.      After you pass the 2 churches, turn right, and then left (at the...

Kaulanapueo Church in Huelo, Maui, Hawaii Along the winding Hana Highway is a community known as Huelo, which is really a part of Haiku, Maui.  A well known landmark is the Door of Faith Road, which brings you to the Kaulanapueo Church in Huelo.  This historic Protestant church was established in 1853 and is still used for worship, with services in the Hawaiian language.  The church walls are made of stone, creating a cool interior for a comfortable experience while attending services.  Haiku is on Maui's north shore, where the tradewinds bring refreshing rains to nourish lush growth.  Coconuts palms, banana plants, and tropical flowers are plentiful in this rich environment.  Garden enthusiasts enjoy planting and growing crops all year round, and you'll find a lot of organic farms her...

I recently put these two commerciallproperties in Haiku Maui real estate for sale. The two lots are almost a full acre. This is a very great location for a commercial project being that there are not to many vacant lots available in this area. Haiku Town is the center of the Northshore Maui community. Located right across the street from these two lots is Haiku Town Center. There you will find a variety of restaurants from Colleen's which she is a very good friend of mine and I love the food. To great local food at Hana Hou's. There are also grocery stores and other business in the area. Both of these lots have water meters so they are ready to go. Both lots are listed at $1,899,000 for the two lots. For more information contact Steve. Steven Nickens R(S) GRI ABR The Wailea Group LLC. W...

Google Earth - Don't you think this is a wonderful tool to use for real estate?  Do you take "snapshots" to send to buyers who aren't from the area?  It really helps to show the location of country properties for sale, especially if there's some topography.  I see that our local Hawaii TV news uses Google Earth images.  I also see some agents putting Google Earth images into their MLS pictures.  Has anyone had any negative feedback from doing this yet?  What's the word - is Google "down with it"?   Pictured above is an image looking north, along the north shore of Maui.  This image really helps me to show the location of a Haiku Maui listing which is very private.... you can't do a drive by to see the home as it's down a long driveway.   Do you think it's OK to use these images to post,...

Elections are around the corner and people are tired of high gas prices. MSN today had a feature on how there is a shift in the attitude of drilling off shore and in Alaska.  Even among the more Liberal groups there is a Hugh shift to drilling in our own backyards. Is this going to be a major factor in the elections. At least the discussion on energy is finally coming to the table.  So how you feel about drilling in Alaska. Is it possible to restrict it to a small area and not destroy the environment. If they do allow drilling would the gas stay in the U.S. for the benefit of Americans. In Canada they drill for their own oil but pay $6 a gallon. What are your thoughts on using oil in our own country? Steve www.nickensmaui.com/haiku_props.htm

Maui's ideal growing climate has led to the introduction of flora from throughout the world. You will see plants, fruit, flowers and vegetables growing with origins ranging from North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. I imagine the only continent without representation is Antarctica. Every once in a while, that means you will encounter some sort of flora that is a bit mysterious. I recently was out taking pictures of one of our office's vacant land listings with fellow AR member Georgie Hunter. We were out in the jungle area of eastern Haiku. Right as we were about to leave the property, I noticed a large piece of fruit near laying on the ground near the edge of the parcel. It wasn't quite like anything I had seen. It was big as evidenced by its size compared t...

Rammed Earth Building Our neighbors are building a rammed earth home on their Haiku Maui property and they built this little experimental project to test some techniques.  It's not finished obviously, but it's coming along.  The walls are made with mud and concrete in different ratios - that was part of the test.  The outside will be covered with a stucco like coating, also using the earth, so it will keep the natural brown color. In this building, the walls are only 7 inches thick, but in the big house, the walls will be 16-18 inches thick.  That's a lot of rammed earth!  I guess it will be sort of like an adobe house... keeping the interior nice and cool... no need for AC. I hope to be updating the progress on the main house... right now it's just a concrete slab.  Got questions abou...

Water = Beer Just want to say thanks to my hubby for helping out a neighbor... We live off the grid on Maui, which means there are no county services in our part of Haiku.  For water, we use a catchment system where the rainwater ends up in this attractive Scafco (converted grain silo) water tank.  It holds 12,000 gallons which is way more than we need, as there's only 2 of us tapping into it.  The rain is channeled off the house's metal roof by way of rain gutters and pipes.  A pump and pressure tank deliver water back to the household system. All our neighbors are in the same boat, either using catchment systems or drilling wells for water.  Some neighbors are newbies and don't have adequate systems in place for times when there is little rain, like right now. A neighbor down the roa...

SOME UNUSUAL PLANTS FROM MAUI HAWAII   Some pictures taken in Haiku Maui, June 2008.     This is the new growing center of a sago palm.  Those little shoots will grow to be about 5 feet long, with sharp spikes along the center rib.  Now they are velvety and soft.                               These bromeliad plants have huge flower spikes that stand 4 feet tall.  The "air plants" are very low maintenance, yet continue to produce these incredible blooms every year.                       Pineapple - You all know what this is, and here it is growing in a pot.  Yes it's true, you can grow a whole new plant like this from the cut top of your fresh pineapple.  It just takes a really long time to grow.  They used to grow them commercially in many more parts of Maui than they do now.  It...
