The last couple days in Haiku Maui have just been beautiful.  I been digging in my garden, getting the soilready for spring planting.  I hope you enjoy the photos. So there you go, some of my favorite flowers.  With spring, mango trees are flowering and I love picking summer mangoes.  So if Haiku MauiReal Estate is a place you would like to call home, give me a call.  It has been my home for over 40 Yrs.  It's a great place to raise a family or plant a garden.  Many people like it for its laid back country life away from the resort community. Steven Nickens R(S), GRI, ABRElite Pacific PropertiesWailea, Maui, Hawaii 96753www.nickensmaui.comEmail: nickens@maui.netCell: 808-280-220836 yrs on Maui, Experience that makes a difference!

Maui Homes for Sale - Bathtubs with a view Here on Maui the weather is so good we like to enjoy being outdoors whenever we can.  This has even carried over to home design.  I will often see beautiful Maui homes for sale like these, where there are no window coverings in the bathroom.  Why spoil the view? OK so this one here is a little cloudy... yes those are clouds outside at a higher elevation up in Kula.  On a sunny day you would be able to see the ocean from this Kula home. KULA MAUI HOMES FOR SALE   Haiku Maui homes often have lush gardens with palm trees and tropical flowers.  Why not bring that island beauty inside too? This north shore Haiku home also has a beautiful pool and pool cabana with ocean views.  However you choose to relax, you can see the ocean and feel the breeze, a...

My Haiku Maui Garden We made it through the winter and ate something from the garden every day.  This was our first time to really set this goal and do it right.  I'm not counting things like bananas and avocados either, but produce from the veggie garden by the house. Thanks to a bumper crop of Kabocha squash (Japanese Pumpkin) that sprawled over the neighboring vacant land, we have had plenty of fresh organic veggies to eat and give away. Just this week we have eaten all these veggies from our large garden: kabocha beets + beet greens salad greens herbs pea pods purple beans cherry tomatoes chard onions green onions green peppers eggplant Now that spring is here, and the days are longer, the plants are already growing faster.  There's new flowers on the old pepper plants, and on the o...

Its spring and time to plant! (Group- Green Mean and Energy Efficent) 1.      First thing to start a garden is to clean up after winter and get the ground ready. 2.      You might consider square foot gardening. Raised beds are easy to maintain. Check http://www.squarefootgardening.com for tips. 3.      I like this method of raised beds, because once it is set up its is low maintenance. 4.      You can get creative with making your raised beds.  Left over lumber that hasn't been treated is great for walls for your beds.  Bricks are another option; I had some left over bricks and recycled them into raised beds. 5.      Getting started with soil preparation.  6.      In Hawaii we have acidic soil, and a clay based soil. It is a good idea to test your soil to get a PH reading on your soil...

Haiku, Maui, Hawaii is a place I would imagine to exist, if I was dreaming about tropical paradise.  A place a way from the hustle of places like Honolulu.  Even know we have quality resorts on Maui, Haiku is a place that when you drive past Paia Plantation town. You have entered another world.  The drive along the coast, with the windsurfers busting airs in the surf.  You see all the surfers out enjoying the surf at Hookipa Beach Park.   Then you head into Maliko Gulch and you officially enter Haiku Maui.  I love the green vegetation, and rows of pineapple fields that scream that you are in Haiku.  Myself, turning up Haiku road is a journey in it self.  I love driving past the old Baldwin Estate.  It is around 25 acres of beautiful landscape property.  Haiku is mostly made up of two-a...

So here is my Holiday Sweet Potatoes Casserole. 1. First you need fresh yams, boil till they are half cooked.  Use a fork to check, they should slip out pretty easy.  Dice into chunks, or boil so you can mash.2. Next is fresh basil for a little spice in your potatoes.3.  A little coconut milk.  I use fresh coconuts out of my yard, can coconut juice will work. 4.  Raisins5.  A pinch of garlic.6...

This year hopefully is changing the way we think, and live.  With the economic climate, and high gas prices we were experiencing we had to change.  The auto industry is getting a major wake-up call.  Okay gas is cheap now, but we know that will change.  Okay I sold my gas guzzler this year, and I am getting 27 miles per gallon with my Passat.  So my whole philosophy is to change the way I work, and live. So this is my green campaign, I have been hauling compost, and manure.  I decided to grow my own organic food and save a lot of money, and get organic untreated food.  It is a paradigm shift.  Actually I have been gardening most of my adult life.  So it was a natural transition, I built these redwood boxes, to eliminated weeds. Asia my Ridgeback   New lettuce What did it was tomatoes up...

FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER.COM I recently joined Twitter.com because I was curious.  I held back as long as I could because I knew it would probably be a real time grabber.  I like it and it can be fun if you have time to get into it, and join in some conversations.  There are some smart peeps on Twitter, but you never know until you spend some time reading their tweets and following their links.  140 characters is a real contraint to being brilliant, so you often have to delve a little deeper by clicking a link. I like to check in there once or twice a day for a half hour, if time permits.  I see some of the same people on there time after time.  Do you twitter?  How much time do you spend there?  Do you find yourself staying too long at the party?  How do you manage your time there? Taro - Kalo These are some taro plants growing in a lush Hawaiian valley, on Maui's north shore, where the plentiful rains bring an abundance of life. Taro patches used to be more common, and every family had these plants as a staple, to get by.  The taro plant is like a symbol of the family, and it was held in high esteem.  It is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated plants, originating in the Malaysian area. In Hawaii, one of the traditional foods, POI, is made from the taro root.  The leaves are another great food, high in vitamins and minerals, and are used most notably in LAU LAU.  Today you can find both poi and lau lau in most Hawaii grocery stores and local restaurants, and the taro roots and leaves for sale in the supermarkets and ethnic food shops. Are you looking for...
