Butler Plantation in Coastal Georgia.....part of American history        Butler Plantation in Coastal Georgia....a part of American History Major Pierce Butler (the third son of an Irish baronet) came to America and married Mary Middleton of South Carolina. Butler's sale of his military commission was used to purchase several plantations in South Georgia including Butler Plantation approximately 1 mile south of Darien Georgia. The home is now owned by the Department of Natural Resources and is used as a private residence. Major Butler left this property not to his children, but his grandchildren if they would change their last name to Butler. Major Pierce Butler (the third son of an Irish baronet) came to America and married Mary Middleton of South Carolina.  Butler's sell of his military commission was used to purchase several plantations in South Georgia including Butler Plantation approximately 1 mile south of Darien Georgia. Major Butler left this property not to his children, but his grandchildren if they would change their last name to Butler.  So Pierce (Mease) Butler ended up with title to this property that had been cultivated with dikes and canals for the purpose of growing rice.  The property has been turned into a wildlife preserve.  What brings attention to most tourists driving down Highway 17 is the old rice mill chimney that still remains.  The home is now owned by the Department of Natural Resources and is u...

Although I did not have time to enjoy any of the festivities this weekend for the Blessing of the Fleet cemeremonies and activities, I did stop on my way to work and snap a few photographs to post.  This is the fountain in the square in downtown Darien where the vendors were set up for Art in the Park. Darien's United Methodist Church located across from Square Vendors had these great old oak trees offering shade during this event.  It was a beautifully sunny day with a nice breeze.  Homes Coastal Georgia Coastal Georgia Blog

As I toured Sapelo Island I could see virtually every facet of a barrier island's natural community, from the forest growing inland to the salt marsh, and the beach and dunes systems. Viewing both life in the natural and the cultural history of Sapelo, was fascinating.  My tour by one of the local land owners was unique in bring out highlights of the African-American community of Hog Hammock, University of Georgia Marine Institute, the Reynolds Mansion and a working lighthouse. Built in 1820, the lighthouse was in service until 1905 when it was deactivated. Following its 1998 restoration, it once again became a working aid in navigation. The historic Reynolds Mansion may be used for group conferences and retreats, with all meals included. A campground is available for groups of 15-25.  ...

Thursday evening, 8/21/08, Chris and Maria Skrip visited Gary and Lori Intoccia and their family at Cooper's Point near Darien, GA.  When we arrived, Gary and Lori said they had found a place that we absolutely had to visit for dinner.  It was the Old School Diner featuring Chef Jerome!  Made famous by Ben Affleck, Old School Diner will soon appear on David Letterman!  Chef Jerome came out after our meal for pictures and after dinner talk.  I asked him how did he get my flounder to taste so good.  Chef Jerome said, "I do not have air conditioning in my kitchen.  I will never have air conditioning in my kitchen because you know I am "Old School".  Also, when the hot fried food comes out of the fryer, if it hits that cold air (from air conditioning), it seals in the oil and makes the fish...
