Dragon Fruit (Pitaya) Progression – Edible Garden in Florida     Dragon Fruit (Pitaya)    Dragon fruit is in the family of cactus. It likes dry and tropical warm weather with some rain. There are some home growers who plant them in their edible garden in Florida        Dragon Fruit Progression    Our friend gave us some cutting last year. My husband Andy planted it at our backyard.  Last month we harvested two dragon fruits.  The climbing plant has many branches,  and Andy has  several different plants started now, some in pots with a trellis and some directly in the ground (around base of palm, and in back staked to 4x4s with metal rebar to support branches as they grow). It also can be grown from seeds.    It takes about one and a half to two years to get fruit if you start with the...

Spring Season, a Few of My Favorite Things   Winter is over soon, and Spring Season is around the corner. There are a few of my favorite things I enjoy in the spring which will not be found in other seasons.       My Favorite Thing # 1   Most of my former buyers are in town for the winter. Their family members and friends are coming here for a visit and to vacation during the spring break. I have the opportunity to meet with them and they also know that I am in the real estate business. Sometimes they will ask me to help them find a place to rent for the next season. I do not handle rentals. However, I will find out how long are they going to rent, then will use the amount they spend on rentals and compare with the cost of owning a condo or a house. The light bulb will brighten and we s...

Camellia (Camellia Japonica), Beautiful Flowers   The Camellia (Camellia Japonica) is a hardy shrub with dark green glossy leaves. It is native to China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.   Their beautiful flowers make them popular throughout the world in almost every country.     Camellia Plant Care   Camellias grow upright to about 4 feet tall and will spread; they need space for air ventilation to avoid scale insects. They like partial shade, acidic and well-drained soil. Also, they are poor in salt tolerance. Too dry or over watering may cause the leaves and flower buds to fall off. If it is infected with insects, the leaf is spotted and the discoloration will spread to the flowers.  To help plants grow well, it is recommended to fertilize them every two months.  The best time to prune is af...

Do you consider this as Spring color? Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta). This golden bronze or orange yellow color tree is Silky oak; the scientific name is Grevillea robusta. The bright outstanding color above the house attracted my attention, while I was on my way home after showing property yesterday.       The Silky oak tree is from Australia and is not related to an oak tree, also not usually classified as a flowering tree. Its wood grain is similar to oak, and is used in making furniture and paneling.       It is a fast growing tree in warm temperatures; it will reach 80 to 100 feet in height. Its leave will drop in the colder months and sometimes become leafless. The beautiful and colorful flowers form an interesting brush shape. May be an ideal garden tree.
