Today I started thinking about art in Miami and the first name that came to mind was Romero Britto.  It's very difficult to drive around Miami without seeing one of his works.  So who is this guy anyway?  Romero Britto is an extremely talented pop artist born in Brazil in 1963 who now lives in Miami.  One of the best articles I found is by Alex Williams of the New York Times, who describes how Britto's work is found everywhere, including Gloria Estefan's home in Star Island, Fort Lauderdale Buses, Miami Children's Museum, housing complexes, parks, and Metro-Rail stations, to name a few.  (I even have a signed lithograph in my dining room! - but Alex doesn't mention that in his article).OctoberGallery.com  makes great mention of Britto including his numerous charitable donations "marked ...

In just a few weeks, at Tamiami Airport the 24th Annual Sunrise Community Hot Air Balloon Race will take place.  The Sunrise Community is an organization that helps people with developmental disabilities.  Their mission statement is as follows: To provide people with disabilities the assistance and supportnecessary to enable them to live valued lives in the community. Limewood Grove is a community of homes in Southwest Miami-Dade County.  It consists of 239 homes.  Most of the homes were built between 1990 and 1993.  The majority of the homes have the typical Spanish feel with stucco and barrel tile roofs.  Limewood Grove is a desirable, quiet community which has appreciated steadily and held it's property values.  The westernmost boundary is on SW 147 Avenue with SW 144th Court on the East, SW 160th Street on the North and SW 166th Terrace on the South. This is exciting news for me and thought I'd pass it along.  If you're not aware of what the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway is (or will be, rather) here it is in a nutshell:  when fully developed, it will be a multi-purpose trail and greenway loop that will link south Miami-Dade communities, including the Miami Redlands, Homestead and many more with Biscayne and Everglades National Parks.  There are two events coming up next week I thought I'd share with everyone. Here's a few numbers representative of the current real estate market conditions in SW Miami Dade (broadly defined as anything South and West of our lovely Miami Metrozoo).  These numbers are for Single Family Homes: Homes for Sale:  571 Range of prices:  $210K - $7.5m Homes under contract:  88 Homes Sold in the last 30 days:  29 Inventory available:  19.7 months (or roughly 1.7 years) The inventory number is calculated by dividing the number of homes for sale by the number of homes sold in the last month.  This results in how "many months worth of homes" are presently available.  That means that if every home listed for sale were to actually sell, it would take that many months to sell them.  This is a very good number to keep your eye on.  The higher the number the higher the indicati...

This weekend is St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral's 29th Annual Greek festival. I left New York and it's diversified cultures years ago.  I miss being able to find just about any ethnic food nearby.  While Miami does have many different cultures and I love it here, one has to travel a lot farther in Miami to find certain things.  I am looking forward to this weekend's Greek festival and being able to buy some good baklava, a flaky pastry made of phyllo dough, nuts, honey and sugar.  Another favorite, although a similar version can easily be made at home, is horiatiki, or the traditional Greek salad made with feta cheese, black olives, chopped cucumbers, onions and tomatoes.  My mouth waters just typing this. Last week Miami city officials said they want to help affordable-housing developers by trying to speed up the permit approval process. City commissioners were told at last week's meeting that efforts would be made to come up with ways to speed up affordable housing projects. After commissioners Michelle Spence-Jones and Angel Gonzalez said city officials are not doing enough to help affordable-housing developers get projects started, City Manager Pete Hernandez said he will meet with city department heads and arrange a meeting to form a permitting fast track for affordable projects. The discussion was prompted by Ms. Spence-Jones due to numerous complaints from many developers stating the difficulty of getting their projects permitted while others seem to get built in record time.
