Yesterday it was an all-time high temperature of 88 degrees here on the Space Coast. It truly gave me the feeling of a warm, sunny summer day on the beach (which of course I took full advantage of). Here is a picture of the beach today: It is overcast with some cool looking funky clouds. Everybody who has come into Starbucks (I am sitting and working across the parking lot from the ocean) has been wearing long sleeves, sweaters, sweat pants, etc... Here is the funny thing...at 9:50am the official temperature is 72 Degrees.   Considering the number of folks who live here full or part time that come from the New York metropolitan area, you would think we would have a number of really good bagel places. Sadly we only have three places that claim to be NY Style bagel joints...and of those only one actually makes the round mounds of breakfast rolls on site...and that would be Ocean Cafe Bagels & More in Indialantic, FL. Now if you enjoy New York Style bagels you will know that they are either dense (because they are boiled) or soft (because they are baked). Ocean Cafe bakes their bagels (based on the hard water we have here in Florida this may be necessity rather than choice). The area along A1A between the Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie causeway is a very desirable stretch of land. (Although the entire area tends to identify itself as Indialantic...in truth much of the area is actually part of Brevard County or City of Melbourne) From restaurants to shopping...hotels to pretty beachside developments it is just a great area to live. Ocean Side Village fits nicely within this area. Located just south of Eau Gallie Blvd and behind the retail complex that includes WalMart and Winn-Dixie (grocery store) the complex has a near perfect location. Bad storms come and go. We get used to it in the tropical regions as well as up and down the East Coast of the United States. Today on the Space Coast we are going to be getting some heavy wind and rain. The surf is high and we are expecting up to 10 foot waves.  Further up the coast (most likely in the Northeast) they are expecting a triple threat storm that has the potential for devastating some highly populated areas like New York and New Jersey.  One of the benefits of living here on the Space Coast is the fact that we are about 55 miles from the Gulf Stream. Many of the tropical storms get caught in the Gulf Stream and get swept right past us (just like this storm)...it acts as a kind of buffer zone for us. Come one, come all. Everyone is invited. It's that time of year again, when the air is crisp, the nights are a bit cooler and the leaves are dropping from the trees. Fall is one of my favorite times of year. This means that it's time again for the Annual Holy Name of Jesus Beachside Fall Festival in Indialantic, FL. There will be live entertainment with dancing, singing and so much more. There will be a craft shop and plants for sale. There are carnival rides, a bounce house and aqua balls. *On Thursday and Sunday buy an arm band for $20.00 to ride all the carnival rides as many times as you like. I have loved Cuban food ever since my college days in South Florida. The taste and style from this large island...that is only 90 miles from the Florida coast has a personality all its own. We have, because of our close proximity I assume, a decent number of Cuban offerings here in Central Florida. Cuban Island Restaurant is the latest Cuban restaurant in the Melbourne, FL area to take a stab at the island's unique cuisine. The restaurant is located in Indialantic, FL. It is just south of Eau Gallie Blvd and about 3 miles north of Rt192 directly on the west side of Hwy A1A...and across the street from the Indialantic Hilton. I did a nice 5 mile run along the beach this morning and I started early. I was able to see...and capture the sunrise as I took a break at the halfway point. I must have ran past about 100 people shooting photos of the beautiful clear July 29, 2012 Sunrise! I love Greek and Mediterranean food. We have a few places throughout the Space Coast that we can go for casual dining and fairly authentic recipes. I would now have to add the new Julian's Mediterranean Restaurant in Indialantic at the top of my list when I have a craving for Hummus, Babganoush (eggplant dip), Grape Leaves or any of the delicious Mediterranean specialties they offer. The Gyro (pronounced Yee-Ro) Sandwich is the best I have had on the Space Coast. The Spinach Pie is excellent...and the Mousaka (an eggplant and meat casserole) is really good. Palm Colony Club is a large condo project located on the west side of A1A in N. Indialantic, FL. It has very reasonable pricing, a good Condo Association with full time in house representation as well as a very nice level of amenities. Palm Colony Club has both one and two bedroom condos...both first and second floor units are available. The project was built out over a number of years, so you will find condos that are aged from the mid 70s to the mid 80s (although they all look alike). The Condos are broken down into separate buildings with eight condos on each building side. The Long Doggers in Indialantic has been fully re-modeled. It looks great and I finally got a chance to go to the new place. It is as great as ever so I decided it was time to do a re-post of my origonal blog post from about a year or so ago. I could call Long Doggers a wing, burger and beer place...but I think that would be selling this local institution a little short. Long Doggers has four Melbourne area locations...including two beachside...one in Indialantic and one in Satellite Beach. Both beachside locations are directly across the street from the Atlantic Ocean!
