Bottlenose mother dolphin and her baby calf from Lloyd Nichols on Vimeo. Baby dolphins are very dependent on their mother for food which she provides for around 18 months or more with rich milk. That would be the nursing period. The growing up period may last up to 3 years. An auntie may help raise the calf. Mother and calf stay close to each other as in this short clip where the mother is showing her baby the proper swimming and diving techniques. They are pretty much in sync.with the mother just a fraction ahead. This was taken along Estero Bay off the island of Fort Myers Beach. Estero island bottleneck dolphins often lurk around their favorite ships at particular times of the day of course looking for scraps and more. They may stay some 5 -10 mn the area then move on. the next day...
