Annual Fort Myers Beach Sand Castle Contest.   Fort Myers Beach offers a lot of outdoor activities for visiting guests and families.  one of the premier events is the annual sand sculpting festival.  The event has grown in stature and ranks among the best in the nation.   Invited artists compete for cash and bragging rights over a one week period.  Sculptors are especially drawn to Fort Myers Beach because the structure of the sand is considered as good as anywhere.  Looked at under a microscope the sand crystals appear to have a rough surface compared to the rounded edges found in many places.  Many contests must import the sand to be used because local sand just doesn't hold together well enough to support the height and weight of modern sculptings !               Families enjoy strol...

Fort Myers Beach used to be home to dusty fishing shanties.  The dirt road along the Gulf of Mexico was subject to being washed out during high tide.  The tourists visiting the area came mostly for the chance to catch fish from the waters off Estero Island.  The name would later be better known as Fort Myers Beach.  The local Indians who shared the island would provide needed supplies when possible. The fishing shanties would be replaced by larger and more permanent structures as the island became known.  Visitors from Canada and Europe became more common and the permanent island population would eventually peak at approximately 6500.  While still a laid back island community Fort Myers Beach is now known around the world as a destination for peaceful and relaxing family vacations. Fort Myers Beach is a barrier island snuggled next to Fort Myers in Southwest Florida.  Fort Myes Beach is a barrier island approximately 8 miles long and half a mile wide.  The Pink Shell Beach Resort & Spa is located on the northern tip of the island.  It started as a collection of cottages and has evolved into a world class resort destination.  The newest addition to the resort is known as Captiva Villas.  It was built next to the flagship White Sands Villas on what was an older structure. Construction started with clearing the lot and drilling 79 holes 24" wide by 55 ft deep.  Workers had constructed rigid supports from " rebar " and these were lowered into the holes after being filled with a cement slurry.  These would become the supports for the building . While these supports see...

I have a neighbor who has been Island bound.  She advised me recently that she has not left the Island in years.  By The Island, she means Fort Myers Beach, Florida, otherwise known as Estero Island or "The Island" by locals.  She doesn't recall just how many years has passed since making a trip to the mainland, but more than three, maybe five.    My neighbor is not disabled.  She carries a valid driver's license and owns a car.  She stays Island bound by choice.  She works part time at an Island establishment.  She goes to the Hammerhead gym every day.  For groceries, there's Publix and Topps.  As for clothes, she likes to order online, but sometimes visits the boutiques for swimwear.  The same for household items.  She orders online.  She's not a big shopper.  She enjoys her Island li...

The 2010 Shrimp Festival on Fort Myers Beach, Florida is a big deal on the Island. There is a fun, Mardi Gras flavor to it and many local folks look forward to it all year long while visitors from all over travel to the Island to be a part of it. Festivities began at 8:30 AM with a 5K Run followed by the parade at 10:00 featuring floats sponsored by local businesses, council people, fireman, Vets and of course, the shrimp princesses.   The parade participants threw gifts of beads and candy to the crowd. After, at the square, the shrimp queen was crowned and there was plenty of shirmp to eat and vendors selling all manner of wares, entertainment and the beach nearby.  A little windy, but warm enough to enjoy the day's festivities.

it's a temporary condition on Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Spring Break. Yes, for a few weeks in March, our intimate Island is invaded by college kids and traffic becomes a source of great irritation, but the influx is great for our local businesses, which rely on a good "season" to stay open all year.  And, yes, I was that young once, or at least I think I was that young.  I just don't recall walking across the street without bothering to look out for cars.  But, we're immortal at that age, right?  I also don't recall shouting curse words in the street for no reason whatsoever.  But, I do remember hanging out with friends, drinking some beers, looking at the girls.  I guess we can live and let live for a few weeks a year.

Welcome to Fort Myers BeachFort Myers Beach! Estero Island is the largest island by far of the community of Fort Myers Beach. Its is 7 miles long by 3/4 of a mile in its widest. The whole length boats a white sanded beach facing the Gulf Of Mexico. There are a few major beaches along the Southwest of Florida, as in Marco Island, Naples, Bonita Springs, Sanibel, the small but wonderful beach of Cape Coral and at last but not least Fort Myers Beach. It ranks as one of the safest in Florida. Originally a small fishing town,Fort Myers Beach became a separate town in 1995 when the number of residents just went over  5,000, which was then the minimum required in Florida to become a separate town with its own councils and government. We are not that much over now and it has keep that small isl...

One of my most biggest suprises when I moved to Southwest Florida was the price of home owner insurances. The two significant exposures for homes in Southwest Flroida is flooding and hurricanes. Home owner insurance prices are reflected with quotes my clients receive from the insurance companies. As a real estaet professional, I am always trying to save my clients money anywhere I can and insurance is one of those areas. I have been able to save my clients up to 40% on their hurricane insurance premiums with a wind mitigation inspection. The wind mitigation inspecation can be done any one of the several companies in Southwest Florida and cost between $150 - $250, whcih normally can be saved in the first year of insurance premiums. The process is pretty simple and can be compared to a no...

I have had several customers this season inquiring about income property on Fort Myers Beach. As the old "cliche" goes, location..location...location is key to being able to rent a property out. I know of owners who are making $80,000 or more on their investment per year.  There are really three keys in my personal opinion that will assist you in making back some money on your investment. 1. The property management company will be key. Finding a property management company that is not only going to market your property but market it international. There are many tourist that spend winters in Florida from Europe and if your management company can tap into the market your chances of getting the property rented on a more consistent basis is much greater. 2. The location of the properties t...

The Fort Myers Beach Condo Market offers substantial buying power right now. Currently the average days on market is 362 while a year ago it was about 154. The median price a year ago was around $455,000 while the median price today is just shy of $ 400,000. Although this is a buye's market, the point I would like to highlight is the orane and black lines, which over the past three months have stabilized. This means that the price is staying pretty stable as well as the days on market. We are starting to see another shift in the real estate market on Fort Myers Beach. If you examine the black line which is the median price, you will see that it is actually slightly heading up, and I anticipate that this will continue to be the trend for Condo's. One of the unique things about the Fort M...
