Hibernia Plantation on Fleming Island is the quintessential "Olde Florida" community. Estate lots are nestled under ancient oaks on former land of the Fleming family along the banks of the St. Johns River on the southern part of Fleming Island. Hibernia Plantation has 119 homes. The first homes were sold in the late 1980s and the most recent vacant lot was sold in 2008. There are still a handful of vacant lots owned by private individuals. It was one of her life's dreams and today it is an important part of Fleming Island history. Margaret Seton Fleming wanted very much to build a church at her plantation on the banks of the St. Johns River on Fleming Island Florida. That dream was thwarted by life's events, including the burning of the family home, the death of her husband and the Civil War. Finally, in 1875, construction began on Margaret's Chapel. Sadly, the first service held in the new chapel on the grounds of Hibernia Plantation was Margaret's funeral, but her dream was realized and today Margaret's chapel still stands under the ancient mossy oaks down a sandy road at the southeastern end of Fleming Island. Eagle Harbor on Fleming Island Florida is a great place to live and recently we witnessed one of the reasons - the caring nature of the residents. We brake for turtles! One day a few weeks ago, while driving from our home in Eagle Harbor to the Watson Fleming Island office, I noticed something in front of me on the road. Other cars and a golf cart had already stopped. A fairly large turtle was crossing the road, going from a pond on the golf course to another pond surrounded by homes. As we edged closer, the turtle retreated its head a bit and 'hopped' a couple of steps. What? I had never seen a turtle do this, but a man commented, "That's what they do."
