Hammock Park in Dunedin Florida does indeed have some fantastic giant bamboo. This morning we went for a walk before the rains came through and wandered on new paths through Hammock Park. We were amazed and pleased to find this clump of giant bamboo, stalks large enough to build a raft. Bamboo is one of my favorite plants and I have grown many varieties in the garden but this was by far the largest that I have seen growing wild. It was breathtakingly beautiful. I had Ronnie stand in front of it so you could get an idea of how tall these giants were, reaching their tops toward the blue skies. Bamboo comes in many sizes and colors and it is an extremely rewarding plant to add to any garden landscape.

Florida's air potato is an invasive that was probably brought here during the slave trade from Africa. Native to sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia, the air potato is considered an invasive exotic weed. Area parks often have containers where visitors to the park can place any air potatoes that are collected during walks. These vines grow as much as 8 inches in a single day and climb up trees and spread through the canopy.  The University of Florida distributes further information on how to combat this invasive plant if you find it on your property.

Curlew Creek Park in Dunedin Florida was our destination this morning for a walk. Curlew Creek Park is a little over two acres of trails that wind around the creek. I had never been to this little park before and was ready for a new adventure. We entered the park off of Curlew Road, east of Alternate 19.  From the looks of the trails, not many people go into this park. The trails meander along the banks of the creek and in some places I had to hold onto the bushes to get to the next section of the trail without sliding down into the creek. Although only a little park, it is a reflection of what Florida used to look like. The white sandy paths through the palmetto bushes and live oak trees looked like beach sand. We climbed up hills and back down again to the creek, wondering through the...

Hammock Park in Dunedin Florida has wild orange and tangerine trees everywhere and we were collecting fruit this past weekend! It is citrus fruit time here in the Sunshine State and if the fruit isn't picked, the trees produce less the following year so Ronnie and I were doing our civic duty by picking lots of tangerines and oranges as we walked through the park. There is nothing better than a fresh tangerine and I now have a large bag of them in the refrigerator! We walked the trails and enjoyed the natural habitat which included live oak trees that had fallen over due to storms. The park is a refuge that we both enjoy visiting.

Mama raccoon and her two babies were certainly enjoying themselves in the water in Hammock Park the other day and since I was up above on the boardwalk, mama coon was not at all concerned about my taking photos. When a couple came along in our direction that had a dog, it was amazing to see how quickly mama coon and her babies took off into the brush to hide. Before she left, I got to watch her fishing for something to eat. It reminded me of watching Bandit Joe, the raccoon pet we had when I was growing up in South Tampa. They are such intelligent animals, it is truly amazing to watch them.

Hammock Park is indeed Dunedin Florida's best kept secret! Located south of Michigan Blvd and east of Bayshore (Alt 19), this 90 acre nature preserve is Florida at it's finest! This amazing coastal forest is one of the last remaining examples of how West Central Florida looked before the land development companies moved in. From tiny hummingbirds to the graceful osprey, from fox and raccoon to wild tangerine and orange trees, this park offers a real learning experience. You can enter the park on San Mateo Drive and park just beyond the Butterfly Garden that is the latest addition to Hammock Park. The Butterfly Garden is home to more than thirty-five species of butterflies! Next to the Butterfly Garden and directly on San Mateo Drive is historic Andrews Memorial Chapel, which has it's ow...

Caladesi Island State Park is a completely natural island off the coast of Dunedin Florida that comprises over 650 upland acres of land and more than 1800 acres of grass flats and mangroves. To get to Caladesi Island you must travel by boat. The Florida Park’s Department makes that possible by having a ferry connecting Honeymoon Island State Park to Caladesi Island State Park. The ferry runs hourly during the winter months and every half hour from mid-February to mid-September. Once you get to Caladesi Island State Park, you can enjoy over three miles of nature trails for hiking, over three miles of relatively empty beach for your bathing pleasure, restrooms and showers in the pavilions that are provided by the park service and some of the best shell collecting opportunities around! Cal...

Dunedin Causeway down here in Florida is always beautiful, even through the fog during an early morning walk. Ronnie and I were out before 8 am this morning and decided to head over to Dunedin Causeway to see what the bait fish were doing along the shoreline. It was extremely foggy and even now, several hours later, the fog has not lifted completely. This is unusual, even for this time of year. Normally, the fog would be gone before noon and the skies a beautiful shade of blue.  I have to assume that we are going to have some cooler weather this week. Still, even cooler weather only means that it won't be up in the 80's but will remain in the 70's. Not bad for almost mid-December. If you are thinking of relocating, tired of shoveling snow, love the water and warmer temperatures, give me...

Honeymoon Island State Park, located just off-shore from Dunedin Florida, is indeed breathtaking year round! To get to Honeymoon Island, one takes the Dunedin Causeway and travel's west. The gate opens at 8 am daily, 365 days a year, and remains open until sundown. Here you can not only enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, collect magnificent seashells and bath in the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but you can also bring your pet pup and romp in the doggie park! There is a specific doggie park complete with shower area for poochie!  Pets must remain on a 6 foot leash at all times while in the park. They have really thought of everything here. If you would prefer taking the ferry over to Caladesi Island, the ferry launch is also within Honeymoon Island State Park. No need to bring lun...

Dunedin Food & Garden Co-Op NOW OPEN in Dunedin Florida and I was there for the first pick-up of the season last night! There were plenty of squash and pumpkin available and also lots of bell peppers and honey but I was after a few things that are not ready in my own garden such as squash, green onions, red leaf lettuce, sweet potatoes and new baby potatoes. Naturally, I also had to pick up some honey from bees here in Pinellas County! Since it was the grand opening of the new season, there were black bean veggie burgers and carrot cake to sample! You can order both online from the co-op when you place your weekly veggie order. Pick up is always on Friday late afternoon between 5 pm and 7 pm at 950 Virginia Street in Dunedin Florida! See you there next week! Check out the links in this ...
