NASA is launching a new satellite for it’s communications network tonight Thursday, January 23, 2014.   The launch is scheduled for 9:05pm EST from Cape Canaveral.  NASA has allowed a 40 minute launch window, so, the launch could occur anywhere up to 9:45pm.The 3.8 ton Atlas rocket was built by Boeing and is the 12th rocket of it’s type.  Since the Shuttle program was retired, Cape Canaveral primarily is used for launching tracking and data relay satellites for the International Space Station, the Hubble Telescope and the US Earth observation satellites.  This particular satellite will bolster voice and data links between mission control, the International Space Station and other orbiting research observatories. Port Canaveral, Fl., recently hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness event. There was a bed and bath tub race and a walk / run along with great live music and refreshments. This cause is especially dear to me because my Mom had a double mastectomy. I'll never forget what my Dad said to her after the first surgery...."I didn't like that one anyway". Patrick Ingham and I won the Hitching Post Horseshoe Tournament on Sunday. I wanted to get a photo of the two of us together but he left before I could get my camera....next time! Donna made outstanding ribs and sides. Everyone had a great time except for Boston because we beat his butt!!! (Boston Butt that is :-) That's what you get for being a Bruin's fan! Port Canaveral is a fun place to go on a Friday night. There are so many good restaurants with live entertainment including Milliken's Reef, Rusty's, Fishlips and Grill's. Donna and I had shrimp done three different ways. I, of course had my Amberbock and she had a Bacardi and coke. The Cocolocos were playing and kept eveyone happy, dancing or tapping their toes. Treasure Island Club Condos in Cape Canaveral Florida are located directly off of Highway A1A on Columbia Drive, just south of the Beach Line or Bennett Causeway. They are just blocks from the beach. And, about 7 minutes from the world famous Cocoa Beach Pier and Ron Jon's Surf Shop. This exquisite gated community is tucked back into it's own peaceful world. The three buildings boast a swimming pool, workout room and elevators. Each unit has it's own balcony with splendid views of the Banana River Lagoon. One of the coolest things about living on the Space Coast is watching the launches from Cape Canaveral.  Well people, you will be having another opportunity this coming week!  On July 18th the Atlas 5 Rocket will launch from the Cape.  The Atlas 5 will launch a 15,000 pound MUOS or Mobile User Objective System satellite for our own United States Navy.  Built by Lockheed Martin, the Atlas 5 was designed to improve the ground communications for our own US forces by aiding the orbital construction of the Navy's planned five-satellite fleet which will provide cellphone-like communications.  MUOS will up the communications over what is presently in existence by over 10 times!  Nothing is too good for our forces!The Atlas 5 launch has been in preparation since May of this year. It's afternoon tropical rain season here in Florida and the weather can change in a heartbeat. As long as you are aware and take precautions, there's no problem. Just make sure you seek shelter if you hear or see lightning. These clouds over the ocean looked ominous but produced very little rain or winds. You never know! Does anyone see the face at the top of the photo? I think it looks like a Viking Warrior :-) BTW - I appologize for not commenting on my AR friend's blogs lately. I went to Cape Canaveral's Friday Fest tonight and bought some all natural unprocessed honey. It tastes awsome and I plan on putting some on my Cherrios in the morning. El Galeon, a 16th Century, wooden Spanish galleon replica, has arrived at Port Canaveral as it tours the state’s East Coast in celebration of Viva Florida 500; the anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon’s historic arrival in Florida 500 years ago. El Galeon is a living piece of history that visitors can tour. The 170-foot, 495-ton, wooden galleon replica sailed into Port Canaveral on Florida’s Space Coast and will be on display through May 12. It then moves on to Ft. Lauderdale (May 14-19) and St. Augustine (May 23-June 3). Every year, Floirda has a flock of "snowbirds" that visit for up to 7 months and then go back up north to the warmer weather. They're here to have a good time, enjoy the beach and they pick up the local economy. Below is a collage of my of my crazy Canadian, Dutchman friend Frank's 63'd bithday party at the "Hitching Post Trailer Ranch" in Cape Canaveral. He's the big guy in the blue checkered shirt. Frank can fix anything! He also plays the spoons and likes his music loud. Everyone just seems to gravitate to Frank and Yvonne's place to enjoy a drink, great music and lively conversation. This little boy made a friend on Cape Canaveral Beach who said he saw a big hole someone had dug in the sand so they went to investigate. His Mom only took her eyes off him for a few seconds and then PANIC! Everyone including the lifegaurds rallied to find him in about 10 minutes. Pictured with their backs to the camera are my Daughter and Granddaughter who helped. They have a system of hand signals and the kids know where they should be - in sight at all times. That's hard to accomplish with the younger ones so constant vigilance is the only answer. What happened here could happen to any Mom on any given day.
