The Art of Sand is a month long event held in Cape Canaveral FL.  There will be sand sculptors from across the globe. They will build monumental creations out of only sand and water. If you have never experienced an event like this, it is truly a sight to see. The artists come from Canada, Russia, Italy, Japan the Netherlands and the US.  They are given 80 tons of sand to build 15 to 30 foot monuments.   The sand creations are on display from April 2 through May 1. The Space Shuttle Discovery Liftoff here in Cape Canaveral Florida at Kennedy Space Center was absolutely beautiful. It took off at about 6:21 this morning into a crystal clear sky.   I was disappointed that with all the pictures I took my camera wasn't able to catch the shot. It was just too dark. The 7 member crew is headed to the International Space Station to deliver supplies and experiments. We are hearing that this is the last night launch for Discovery.  There are 3 more launches before September, when the shuttle program is expected to be retired. Country Band Hayfire entertains at Milliken's Reef in Port Canaveral. Locals and tourists relaxing on a perfectly sunny Sunday afternoon listening to good music. That's me with a Corona and the cruise ships in the background. We also went to Grills Tiki Bar and watched this "seasoned" dude dancing up a storm with the young ladies. Old guys RULE! Cape Canaveral held it's very first Friday Fest from 6 to 10 pm on Mar. 5, 2010. I got there early when people were just starting to arrive but the crowd was pretty good when I left around 7 pm despite the chilly weather. Now that's real flame broiling! I think he likes his own cooking :-) There was lots of food and drink, crafts, music, art and more. The Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach communities are wonderful places to live and the people are friendly too. If you get tired of going to the beach, there are lots of other fun things to do and Orlando's theme parks are only 50 minutes away.   This artist used spray cans, round caps and paper for wiping to create the work on the right. It only took him 15 minutes and was amazing to watch.   The little monkey on the left climbed up and down... 03/05/2010

The Brevard Cultural Alliance presents the Art of Sand from April 2-May 1 of 2010.  These works of art will be unveiled on April 2 and on display in the City of Cape Canaveral near the Radisson Resort at the Port.  There will be artists from nine different countries participating and they will convert 80 tons of sand using only water into magnificent works of art.  Each weekend there will be professional and amateur events to coincide with the festival.  Families and children can also try their hand at sand sculpting during the event.  There will be food, drinks and different entertainment during the month-long event. The long root structure of sea oats holds together loose beach soil and prevents erosion when tropical storms blow on the coast. Even so, there is still the ongoing need for dredging and pumping sand from a mile off shore so that tourists and wildlife can enjoy that perfect day at the beach. There is controversy about whether dredging harms the off shore ecosystem and proper safeguards must be in place. I believe the combination of man working with nature to preserve the beaches we all love is an important step in the right direction. Sea oats are protected by law in Florida and subject to fines for disturbing them. Remember to use the crossovers and simply admire these precious plants. Freedom of the Seas sailing by Millikin's Reef in Port Canaveral. People came from all over to attend a benefit for the family of well loved local entertainer "Pizza Bob Neace". The event happened Sunday 11/22/09. Bob's website is www.pizzabob.com The Billy Lee Soul Review with photos of Pizza Bob. He just suddenly dropped dead from a heart attack and leaves a wife and four children. I guess when your time is up, it's up. The bottom line is he had a ton of friends and fans and will be remembered for a very long time. What more can you ask for? Cybil Gage performs a "Billy Holiday" style set with her phenominal keyboard player on the right. There were 20 outstanding bands, there was a buffet with donation and lots of cold beer. Pizza Bob would have loved it! This is what the beach looked... 11/22/2009
