Tropical storm Nicole replenished ponds all over the East Coast and I took the opportunity to capture some reflections in the certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat only steps from my home in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The National Wildlife Federation encourages homeowners and businesses to preserve and create natural habitat where flora and fauna can flourish. I just bought a one year old Nikon D 90 digital SLR for a great price and had to experiment with the flowers in my yard. This hibiscus has buds all over it and soon will be loaded with showy bursts of color. I'll post more when I start to master the camera and believe me, there is a lot to learn :-) My brother Larry has the same model so I have a built in tutor. This picture was taken on the balcony of the Treasure Club Condos in Cape Canaveral FL.  My dear friend, Tony, from England purchased a unit last year in the complex.  The 3 buildings are surrounded by water on two sides.  My favorite thing to do when I visit Tony is to go down to the docks and watch the manatees play. If you go early enough, when it's not too hot yet, you may see 10-15 manatees at a time. I ride my bike every evening around 7 pm and made a few stops as usual. Cape Canaveral's Friday Fest is held on the first Friday of every month and features live music, good food, drinks and various vendors and artists. It's a great place to meet your neighbors in a family oriented setting. I think Vegas Bob must have dropped by and left one of his Roswell Aliens :-) Vintage the Band played Classic Rock. A lady demonstrates how to use a spinning wheel. Festive Friends. BP is BS according to this fellow. I continued my bike ride to Jump's Tiny Tavern in Cocoa Beach where I met friends Steve and Jan. The trio "Strobelite" played some awesome music to the delight of the friendly local natives. I even threw a few horseshoes after the show and was back home by 10:30. They call it the "Hummer Killer" and it is reportedly the largest limo in Florida. JJ gave us a tour and turned up the volume on his bad ass sound system. This baby would make any rock star or power boat racer proud! Inside view. Everything you need for a night on the town is right here. Fully stocked bar and plush seats. The idea behind National Night Out is simple: People in the participating communities know crime happens, and they’re doing their part to put an end to it. When the program started in 1984, just 400 communities took part in National Night Out. This year on Aug 3, 2010, tens of millions of Americans were expected to take part in various events, from street parties to simply turning on a porch light and sitting outside for a few hours. On June 9, 2010, I posted The Bird Man of Cape Canaveral, Florida As a result, I'm happy to say two old friends and unique individuals have reunited after 20+ years. Paul Eaton is known as the “Bird Man of Cape Canaveral”. His garden is really a miniature rainforest on a double end lot on Lincoln Ave., only two blocks from the ocean. Up North, these would be rose colored glasses but we like sunny yellow here in Florida. Just wearing these glasses on the beach will make you see everything in a positive light. Here are just a few of the things I saw: 1) The housing market will rebound with gusto next week and steadily improve along with buyer confidence. 2) No hurricanes will hit Cape Canaveral / Cocoa Beach in 2010 3) BP will finally get it's act together and stop that damn leak before being boycotted out of business! 4) Active Rain will hold a giant beach party "conference" in Cocoa Beach. Paul Eaton is known as the “Bird Man of Cape Canaveral”. His garden is really a miniature rainforest on a double end lot on Lincoln Ave., only two blocks from the ocean. His tenants are 28 parrots, 2 macaws, 3 cats, 2 dogs and even emus. He says all the plants are better for the environment than asphalt and it's a lot easier than cutting grass every week. On a hot summer day, the foliage cools his land by about 10 degrees. His home was built in 1947 and according to Paul, is the second oldest surviving house in Cape Canaveral. Paul loves Reggae music and you can sometimes see him at local venues that have bands. He is a retired Air Force Sergeant. Paul's plants include Cape Honeysuckle, crape myrtle, bamboo, frangipani (plumeria), Brazilian sunflower, Turk's cap (a lilly), wild ginger, ... 06/09/2010

This Florida Manatee looks a bit like a submarine to me - a very well fed submarine. My wife took this photo at Sea World. Manatees spend up to a third of their lives eating and consume about 7.5 times their body weight every day. They come up for air as often as every 30 seconds but can stay under for 20 minutes when resting. They are slow swimmers averaging only 3 to 5 miles per hour and that's why many have propeller scars from boats. It's pretty cool to see them down by our community dock or when we're out kayaking. This was the view from my beach chair on Thursday. It was my first full day back from visiting my ill Father in Canada for ten days and I needed the R & R.
