A Wilmington tradition since 1921, the Flower Market is held the weekend of  Mother's Day with proceeds benefiting children's charities.  It offers plenty of opportunities for dads and kids and daughters and sons to find gifts for Mom. There are plants of all types, ranging from nursery grown seedlings to those donated from local gardens (Thinning out plants? Bring them here). Back "in the day," many local estates donated plants from their greenhouses, but there are not many of those still operating. There are herbs, veggies, hanging baskets, perennials and ground covers.(right-view of grounds from top of Rockford Tower). There are also merchant tents with all manner of products from soaps, oils, jewelry, scarves, hats, clothes for all ages, and handmade items not found anywhere else. K...

Yesterday, I was admiring the hellebores blooming away like crazy in my yard. Sometimes called Lenten Roses, they had been in bud and waiting to come out in full force for several weeks. And you never know exactly when they will bloom. It depends on the weather. We have had temperatures nearing 70 degrees for several weeks, and Ash Wednesday was this past week, so they decided to go crazy. And then came today. Great gobs of  snow fell this morning, and now the sun is melting it all. The poor hellebores had been hidden in all the snow and are now shaking it off as if to say, "Well, I never!"  So all the panicking by the TV weather gals (which I don't believe most of the time) about rush hour pandemonium seems to have been for naught.   This has been a weather report from Carolyn Roland, ...

Not in the duPont category of wealth,  F.Scott Fitzgerald had already spent all of his earnings from The Great Gatsby when his editor suggested he  move to quiet Wilmington, Delaware in 1927.Scott had already spent all of his earnings from The Great Gatsby and had burned out in Hollywood in an attempt at screenwriting. He needed another hit novel. His former Princeton roommate, John Biggs, found a Historic Home for Scott and Zelda near where he lived in Wilmington, Delaware. He thought, perhaps, the quiet area would inspire Scott to complete his work. So it was to the Delaware River at Ellerslie, an 1842 mansion owned at the time by William and John Sellers, founders of the nearby Edge Moor Iron Company,  to which in 1927 the Fitzgeralds moved  and rented. Much partying ensued, includin...

William duPont,  Jr. was born in a 16th C manor house in Surrey, England. He grew up in Montpelier, the 1760's Virginia home of President James Madison. So if you  get the idea that he felt architecturally and well as financially privileged, you would probably be right.I considered these facts as I visited nearby Bellevue State Park outside of Wilmington, Delaware.  William duPont, Jr. had inherited his father's estate here in 1928. Begun in 1855 by wool  merchant Hanson Robinson, the manor house was a Gothic Revival mansion with crenelated towers. This would not do for duPont, who painstakingly removed all exterior signs of the Gothic features, and turned (albeit awkwardly) it into a version of Montpelier. The estate also reflects the interests of William and his first wife, Jean Liset...

Being a flexible cook far away from my Polish Chicago origins, I have found a way to make pierogi even better than my aunts made. They would gather before Christmas and start a pierogi making session. One of my aunts gave me a recipe for dough, but I had problems with making it not stick to the rolling pin. Then I discovered this Michael Symon recipe from Cleveland (close enough!) and made a few changes. The result: Greatness!  1 Egg  3/4 cup Sour Cream  8 tablespoon Unsalted Butter (softened)  1 teaspoon Kosher Salt  2 cups All-Purpose Flour (plus more for rolling dough)     For Filling and Serving  2 cups Mashed Potatoes  1Medium Yellow Onion chopped  Salt  Sour Cream (to serve)  1/2 cup Farmer's Cheese (see note)  3 tablespoon Butter     Make the Pierogi Dough: To make the dough, wor...

The weather was nice the day after Thanksgiving, so I decided to take a walk at Bellevue State Park, just 5 minutes from my home in Wilmington, Delaware. It was calm and quiet, not many people on the walking track. In warmer weather, there would have been more visitors than the few I saw playing Frisbee golf, or the 2 people who were fishing in the pond. Yet the reflection of the stone wall next to a bridge caught my attention, so I am sharing it with you.Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. From Carolyn Roland, Your Older and Historic Homes Resource in Delaware and Southern Chester County, Pennsylvania.
