And I certainly didn't suspect that it contained a 1790s log tavern. But in the years around 1800, Tweed’s Tavern was an important layover stop for carters and others traveling between the Delaware River and the grain farms and gristmills farther inland. For many years, I have attended the Chinese Festival presented every June by the Chinese American Cultural Center in Hockessin, Delaware. I remember many years ago when the converted old North Star School which now houses the center did not have air conditioning and we sweltered in the late June heat.And then, if my memory serves me correctly, the program in the auditorium began with an introduction to representatives from the Taiwanese embassy in Washington. The Center's dance students presented dances from indegenous Taiwanese tribes, as well as from various areas of Mainland China. For more than the past 20 years, the Chinese American Community Center in Hockessin, Delaware has hosted a festival. Even though Wilmington's Italian and Greek Festivals preceed it by a week or two, I have always considered this the "go to" festival. Maybe it's because there are not inebriated people tripping over you and getting jostled by the crowd, but I enjoy this family event held in a former elementary school where the group holds classes all year.  A special event this year was a new lion for the traditional lion dance, and it was welcomed by a group of local politicos, including Gov. Carney and U. S. Senator Carper, as well as our first woman representative in Congress and first black to hold that position. Since its first Wildflower Celebration in 2004, Mt. Cuba botanical gardens have been open to the public. First on a limited basis, it is  now open Wednesday to Sunday April to November.  This duPont estate was constructed in 1935 for and by duPont family members. In 1949 they brought in well known landscape architect Marian Coffin to design formal gardens.  Today, the duPonts are gone, and these gardens near Wilmington, Delaware have been transformed from cornfields into thriving ecologically functional landscapes featuring many native Piedmont plants. On September 20, 1999 while at a wedding reception, I could not get up from a chair that I was sitting in without the use of my arms.  It was very strange but also very sobering.  Although hesitant, I went to the ER and was diagnosed with a muscle disease that can be debilitating as well as fatal in many patients.  I was fortunate to have a fantastic medical team headed by an amazing doctor.  Weeks of hospitalization and lots of therapy later, I was able to come home to my family.  If I had not written about it, most of you would never know anything about this part of my life.  Some who contract this type of disease are not so fortunate and it can go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for periods of time.  Take a small piece of your day this Wednesday to enjoy some very tasty soups while givin... 02/20/2017

I always look forward to the Chinese Festival in Hockessin, Delaware. It is appearing late on the summer calendar, because apparently they had construction going on earlier.  I am sure it will be a great event--I have been going for at least 10 years, dating back to pre-air conditioning in this re-purposed school. It has been quite a few years since the Chinese American Community Center cooled off, and hopefully the singers, dancers, instrumentalists, yo-yo and martial arts performers will be at their best. The costumes are always beautiful and the small children doing folk dances are amazing. Out in the courtyard under a tent various groups will be preparing food, ranging from take-out specials to the more exotic dishes. WSTW is once again hosting the Summer Family Fun Nights at the Brandywine Zoo.   This Thursday, July 17, 93.7 WSTW will again be hosting the Summer Family Fun Night at the brandywine Zoo during special evening hours from 6-8 PM.
