Friday Flags: The Wind 'was-a-blowin' in Waterbury CTAt a recreational park in the East Mountain section of Waterbury last week, it was not difficult to notice the flag at the top of the pole, for the way the wind was trying to pull it off.It was not only extending the flag, but the gusts were causing the pole to bend as well.I thought for sure that the flag would be ripped away with the gusts, but it stood proud and resilient. A true testament to the legacy we have created as a country for almost 250 years.Eventually the wind did slow down a bit and the pole didn't bend, and the flag didn't rip.Against the blue sky, it was well worth a few minutes to appreciate.Friday Flags: The Wind 'was-a-blowin' in Waterbury CT

Friday Flags:  A Naugatuck CT Landmark Full of PrideI took a quick detour while on my way to an appointment early this week, and it may have been pre-0rdained, as I had a stop sign that also said, here's the place. The old train station in Naugatuck, which was once a busy spot for commuters going into the New York area has been out of rail service or years, A new one is under construction on another part of the railway. The old station has been repurposed, and now is a restaurant, called The Station RestaurantI made a metal note to stop on my way back to get the shot.It was just meant to be and again I share the results as well.Friday Flags:  A Naugatuck CT Landmark Full of Pride

Friday Flags: A Nice View from a Waterbury RoadwayComing out of a store in Waterbury this week, my attention was caught by a hard waving flag in the parking lot of a building. I pulled into the driveway and the person with me asked what I was doing.  I merely told her I had to take a photo of the flag to continue a post series. The building has several tenants, but the primary tenant is a German company called Drew Marine. They specialize in heavy duty coatings for ships, and this office is warehousing and administrative.I knew if I waited briefly, I would get the shot I wanted. This pause was 5 minutes f y day, and more than worth the wait.Friday Flags: A Nice from View a Waterbury Roadway

Friday Flags: A Veteran's Post Will Aways Have a FlagHeere in Prospect, CT, we have a VFW post, #8075, and it is an active group as there are always cars in the lot, and in season their outdoor pavilion always has activities. The post like many across the country is a safe place for all veterans that have served overseas to protect those that cannot protect themselves. With the way we find ourselves as the protectors of the world, that makes for membership with different types of memories than when initially founded in Sept, 1899 after the Spanish-American war.Purpose to fer comfort to rehabilitating veterans as well as support for widows and orphans.Of course, their flag waves proudly adjacent to the building and is very visible from the main roadway. They also have an Apache attack helic...

It's Supposed to be Spring in Prospect, CTI was walking around our yard yesterday looking at the winter debris needing to be cleaned up and even started with some of it.The bulbs were pushing up their sprouts, but they didn't seem too anxious to leave the warmth of the ground. The hyacinth has thicker and after I took away some of the mulch, it seemed to stretch a bit. There is one area of daffodils that is sheltered and they are making their presence known as well. The lower rock garden is sprouting as well and will get a trimming for size soon.Hopefully, we will get some consistent warm weather so that the yard shows its stuff to advantage. It's Supposed to be Spring in Prospect, CT

Friday Flags: Welcome Back to Prospect CTWe enjoyed the escape for Connecticut to get some relief from the snow and the cold. We visited friends, and family; I got to play some golf, even shot my age on one of the courses in Hiton Head, and just relaxed. We had gotten a huge drop of snow just before we left and as well had to run to the post office on the way out, I got a shot of the flag at McGrath park here in ProspectThe flag was flying bravely as we left and seemed to be saying it wished us well.A I drove as today, I stopped to say hello, and it waved back to me.The wind wasn't blowing very hard, and it is a sheltered spot so I was glad to get what it gave me.It was also nice to see all the snow gone as well. Friday Flags: Welcome Back to Prospect CT

Friday Flags: The Snow Will Never Cover the FlagThe scene was just too clean to not stop. The frozen pond, the blanket of white almost 2 feet deep, and the solitary pole with the flag flying clear against the blue sky.It was just a simple way to bring a little warmth to a cold February Day in Prospect CTFriday Flags: The Snow Will Never Cover the Flag

Friday Flags: Show a Little Love for the Town Garage FlagWe have had a difficult and very cold winter so far and it is not over yet. The town garage is active ahead of storms with the trucks getting prepared for the storms as well as residents going in to pull a pail or 2 of sand for walkways. As I was pulling in it had shown a full wave, but when I got out of the car to take the photo it seemed to tease me and wanted me to spend some time there. As I was getting ready to take the shot, a truck parked right in front of me as if to check what I was doing. Once it pulled away, the wind stopped. I needed to step across the roadway, but traffic was heavy. Finally, I got my chance and took it.It was worth the wait, and I do hope that when I get back to town, the snow will be less on the ground ...

Friday Flags: The School Flag Caught my AttentionIn our state, and many others as well, we make our property tax payments in 2 splits. The bills come out with cars and the first half of the real estate payment due in July, and the second half of the real estate payment is due in January.I made my way to town hall to drop off the second payment and as I walked back to my car, something was trying to get my attention. The flag in front of the Regional Middle School, Long Meadow was trying to get my attention.I didn't want to get into the school parking lot, but the flag seemed to just want to let me know how it looked. In as much as I had just completed one of life's guarantees, paying taxes, I considered it acceptable.I am perfectly willing to not have to make the second part of that life ...

We Got a Dumping of Snow in Prospect CTThe mega-storm that hit the country this past weekend has many in a state of emergency.  We may have dodged a bit as originally it was supposed to snow through late afternoon today, but it passed quicker.I stepped onto the back deck to try and measure, and it showed as half a yardstick, 18"The roof over the basement entrance, shows it slightly in better detail. That is across the yard and driveway. Our plow man came by late yesterday afternoon and will most like come back at some point today.I still need to get out there and clear where the plow doesn't reach.Oh, the weather outside is frightful The National Weather service uses a deep orange for snow depth between 12-18 inches. It looks so peaceful and serene. Had it dropped a month ago, many would h...

Friday Flags: The Prospect CT Town HallDriving through town there were trees waving with the gusts. As I started to reach the town center, I noticed the flags in front of the Prospect CT Town hall. There was a lot of wind as I was driving, but once I stopped, it seemed to disappear. The looked so good with the American flag and the POW flag against the blue sky. I needed to wait and see if I could get lucky. After 15 minutes, this is the best I could get, and I am wondering if it really blew once I drove out of sightFriday Flags: The Prospect CT Town Hall

A Cleansing with a Fresh Coating of SnowIt's January in New England, and with the dropping of temperatures there's also something else that drops and that's snow. When I looked out this morning it was white, and I don't recall hearing that in the forecast yesterday. It was a little less than 2 inches and left the trees and ground with a fresh white blanket. It was cold enough, so cleanup was easy, yet the frosting it left on the trees was pretty and may well stay around for a couple of days. The birds had little trouble finding the feeder so that is fine for them as well.A Cleansing with a Fresh Coating of Snow

Friday Flags: Hotchkiss Field Flag Waving for MeIt has been a tough week, and I was not preprepared for this post. As I was making my way out of Prospect, I glanced over to the fields at Hotchkiss Field, and the flag was beckoning to me.I turned around and went in, parked and started to make my way over to where the flagpole was, which was on the opposite of the park. The wind had disappeared, and I felt I was going to be disappointed, but still, I had a streak to keep. The wind returned and I got my shot. So far this has been my best experience this week.Friday Flags: Hotchkiss Field Flag Waving for Me

Friday Flags: The Prospect CT Post Office Waving HardDriving through town on my way in Waterbury I always pass the post office. This particular day the flags were really waving hard. I don't know if it was more than the wind, or just the wind gods giving me the shot I needed for the week. The flag was just raised to full mast as the state was honoring the 25th anniversary of the Sandy Hook School shooting. The second flag is for MIA's and POW's that was initiated in the 70's, many of them lost never to be returned. It is a proud flag and in the midst of the Holiday season, most appropriate as well. Friday Flags: The Prospect CT Post Office Waving Hard

Friday Flags: The Breeze was Strong at the Prospect CT LibraryThe Northeast is into an Arctic Blast and fortunately there is no precipitation associated with it. It offers clear blue skies and where flags are concerned, enough wind to make them flutter proudly. As I went through the town center the flags were flying all over and I went by the library, and the flag was looking proud with the type of flutter that almost seemed to imply what took me so long.  It was an easy shot to take, and I proudly share it today.

The Flags are Flying at the Golf Course in Waterbury, CTMy golf year is over and weather permitting the golf courses in the will be open until December 15 and then close for the season to re-open in the spring. The day was brisk with a bit of wind. Both the flag on the 18th green, and the big flag were blowing at a southeasterly direction which for me was the way home.Hopefully in the spring it will blow early in a northwestern direction so I can find my way back. The Flags are Flying at the Golf Course in Waterbury, CT

Happy Thanksgiving 2025 The Thanksgiving tradition is one that carried over from the fall celebration of a bountiful harvest so common among the farmers of Europe, long before they made their way to the New World. In the New World, it was celebrated as well for almost 100 years before the first Native Americans, of the Wampanoag Tribe were invited to join. The first national Thanksgiving was declared in 1777 by the Continental Congress. It has been celebrated on and off at the end of the Autumnal harvest ever since. Today we gather with friends and family to enjoy a bounty of food and the fellowship of each other. Traditions that may have been added along the way are expected, and also a prayer will be said for those that aren't here to celebrated with us this year.In our household, are ...

Friday Flags: A Reason to Stop in Naugatuck CTI was on my way to an appointment one morning this week and noted a flag along the way that seemed to be speaking to me.I made sure I went home the same way and it was still there as if to say what are you waiting for, so I pulled into a church parking lot and walked to the curb. The flag sits on an island in front of a re-purposed elementary school, but the flag didn't care a thing about that.Friday Flags: A Reason to Stop in Naugatuck CT

The Colors of Fall in Prospect, CT  2025  Fini! Each Fall I share a sequence of posts on the progression of colors on the golf Course at Crestbrook Park in Watertown, CT.I like it as it has high vistas that make for special views when the colors are turning, and as I played and walked almost every hole I ever played for almost 38 years, it has a special place in my heart. We do have some fine colors in our yard, but as they yard is not as large it doesn't last very long, except! In our front yard, stands a red maple tree, whose roots sit in the middle of the septic systemIt is always the last to change colors as the toes are warm and nourished, and for the same reason, the leaves stay on the tree until the snow knocks them off.So, as we got home from a slightly longer anniversary escape, I...

Remembering Veteran's on Nov 11 2025 Today, in the United States, is Veteran’s Day. It’s a day to acknowledge brave men and women that found it important to enter military service and cooer their service to their country remember all Veteran’s that have served their country in a time of war. Originally it was known as Armistice Day, which was the day the articles ending World War I were signed, at the 11th hour of the 11 Day of the 11 month. On June 1, 1954, Congress changed the day and replaced Armistice with Veteran's Day in order to include the veteran's from WW11 and the Korean conflict. Some people use the day to recognize the sacrifices that were made by some as well.I have family members that served in World War II, and friends that were in Korea as well as Viet Nam.Those that serv...
