Friday Flags: A Wind Blowing to the West in WaterburyOur spring here in Connecticut has been completely out of the norm. We have gotten warm weather, then it drops back to low temps. We get a lot of rain and then we get another dose of snow.Weather patterns typically are from the west to the east as generated by the rotation of the earth, as the wind blows. So, it was a bit unusual for me to see the flag at the golf course blowing to California, but that was the case. There was also no waiting for the wind to pick up as it was blowing in that direction for most of the afternoon.Friday Flags: A Wind Blowing to the West in Waterbury

Friday Flags: The Flags are in All Over the Course, Mar 2025For the golfers in the Greater Waterbury CT area the small flags are flying to kick off the golf season. It is still a bit nipsy and for this Friday snow is in the forecast, but as I drove by the course earlier in the week the wind gave me a reason to stop. With the season started there is now someone that can attend to the flag on a daily basis, and it was waving proudly.A small walk down the 18 fairway allowed me to get a shot of both flags. While a score of 39 would be wonderful on the back nine, that is just too cool of a temp for me to venture out yet. Maybe just a bit spoiled form the southern run I just took.Soon enough as the yard is still in need of some attention.Friday Flags: The Flags are in All Over the Course, Mar 2025

Friday Flags: Official Opening of The Mountain Grill Waterbury CTSaturday morning was a big day at the East Mountain Golf course as it was the official opening of the remodeled club house and the formal introduction to the general public of the Mountain Grill. As we were walking down the 17th fairway, we could hear bagpipes playing songs nearby. Then, as we were approaching the green on the 18th fairway there was a crowd assembled behind the green. For the way we had played that morning, we knew it wasn't for us.After 2 years and a cost of over $2.5 million the grand unveiling. Just prior to the speeches, the bagpipes started, and the Waterbury CT Police Pipes and Drums band marched around the 18th green.  Full credits were offered to all the people that worked so hard to allow the resto...

Welcome to The Mountain Grille at East Mountain Golf Course After a 2 year absence, the club house at the East Mountain Golf Course is open with many changes designed for safety and comfort with a new 19th hole. There had been minimal changes to the inside of the club house since originally built in the early 1930's as a WPA project. As an aside, I have played golf with the son of one of those workers, whose job was to break up and remove the rocks from the fairways. I think he took too many breaks. All inside is state of the art and all mechanicals have been completed to modern day codes for the safety of all. The new owners, Pama and Mark Goggins, and Fran Phelan have intentions of operating The Mountain Grille as a year-round, family style restaurant. The building has new HVAC systems...

Friday Flags A Waterbury CT Company with Foreign RootsAt the exit I normally take to go home, there is a large plant that has had a few companies there over the years. Currently it is home to Drew Marine, a German owned company that services chemicals to certain maritime markets. The parking lot is large, and just across from the main entrance to the building is an lsland with a large flagpole. The breeze was blowing in many directions so I wanted to get a different view to get a better shot.Just enough to get the shot and another Friday Flag post.Friday Flags A Waterbury CT Company with Foreign Roots

Friday Flags in Waterbury, CT Zip Code 06705Making a drive through the East End of Waterbury to get to an appointment gave me an opportunity stop and get a photo in front of a mini-plaza.The flag was enjoying the breeze as I was driving by sort of a tease for me. By the time I stopped, I have become very patient with my flags and as I made my chant to the wind gods, my patience was rewarded.A perfect wave to share on m post. Now to go and find another one for the following week.Friday Flags in Waterbury, CT Zip Code 06705

Friday Flags A Waterbury Golf Course Steeped in TraditionAs I prefer to play my golf the traditional way by walking, I have found a most enjoyable location at the municipal golf course in Waterbury CT where I learned the game 64 years ago. Learning is a teaser word, as no one ever really learns the game as we continually practice it.  The golf course was opened in 1932 and has gone through some changes from the original layout, but the clubhouse hasn't and is currently in the last stages of a $2,000,000 remodel and scheduled to open Labor Day weekend.A big difference with the renovations is that the new restaurant that will be opening will be a year-round restaurant.  As the clubhouse has been closed for a while, it will be most welcome. One thing that has not changed, is the flag that ...

Friday Flags A Cemetary Pair of Sentinels in Waterbury CTAs I was heading into a cemetery this week to water flowers on a family gravesite, I was happy to see a flagpole with a waving banner ready for me.As I walked over to take the photo, I was also happy to see a pair of sentinels holding flags and saluting as well. This week especially we should be more appreciative of the liberties we enjoy and mindful of how it as earned. Friday Flags A Cemetary Pair of Sentinels in Waterbury CT

Celebrating Freedom It Carries a High PriceOur War of Independence was a battle fought by professionals on one side and by determined colonists, many farmers and shopkeepers with some soldiers intermixed. The decisive battle was fought in Yorktown, VA, with the French fleet blocking the sea and the Continental Army encamped on land. The Continental Army was assisted by a French force of 5,000 men and 450 officers under the command of General Jean Baptiste de Rochambeau. The had landed in Rhode Island and made a forced march in 14 weeks to meet Washington's army for the final siege and battle at Yorktown. That march took the army right through Waterbury CT and a non-descript marker, almost completely covered by weeds is the only reminder of that passage through the area. There are symbolic ...

Lebanese Farina Cake  A Special TreatAs our church is having it's Taste of Lebanon this weekend, the parishioners are being asked to prepare dishes to be sold. My wife was asked to make the farina cake, harisat-el-louz. ris-to-laws.  The farina most often eaten at breakfast on a cold morning is something with which many have a great deal of familiarity. It is a coarser grain designed to stick to the ribs. With a finer grained farina, the Lebanese make a cake, which is considered a true delicacy. The recipe below offers a couple of alternatives. Ingredients2 cups of farina        1 cup of the breakfast farina, (boxed)        1 cup of finer also called semolina1 stick of unsalted margarine/butter3 1/2 tablespoons of sugar1 cup milk2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder1 cup simple syrupMelt but...

Any Pond Will Do for a RestWill I am doing my rehab, I can't play golf as yet, but at the very least we take walks on the golf course, with a watchful eye for stray shots.  We stay pit f view and are respectful of the golfers when they take their shots. I also keep my chuckles to myself when their shots are a little off-line.On one fairway, after a particularly heavy storm activity where there would not normally have been any caught my eye. This male and female were in a storm pond, and he was very attentive to her. Must be mating season. There is a reservoir adjacent to the golf course and many areas where they can have more privacy and maybe even make a nest so she can lay her eggs.At the very least they were away from all the other birds and ducks and he could make his pitch.Any Pond W...
