Ready to Kick Some Asphalt? Those who have lived in and around Wallingford for any length of time have probably heard of Willy D’s Photo T’s & NASCAR Collectibles, a racing themed apparel and collectible shop located at 106 South Colony Road in Wallingford. Owners Bill and Barb Doucette are going into their 18th successful year with the store and have recently decided to take their love of NASCAR one step further: to the track! Having already run a successful indoor go kart track for several years, Bill and Barb began research into the possibility of bringing outdoor performance karting to Wallingford. They were unable to locate any other tracks of that type in Connecticut, so they set out to make plans to open the first one in the state. They secured a location, designed an outdoor tra...

Wallingford's Sonic Drive-In Open For Business Mickey D's arches are sagging a bit. BK's crown has lost a little of its luster. And Wendy's? Well, they may be lost in Never Never Land. After months of negotiation, debate, meetings, planning, studies and construction, Wallingford's newest eatery opened today with style, fanfare and fantastic food. While I could not be there in person, I did follow some of the festivities on Facebook. After the ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 AM, the drive-in began serving customers in earnest at 10:30 AM. Sonic staff did well to take lots of pictures of the tidal wave of customers who descended on the place to get their first taste of the delectable menu of burgers, hot dogs, fries, tater tots, salads, desserts, and the over 169,000 possible combinations o...

The Connecticut Wine Trail: First Stop We recently posted about the Passport to Connecticut Farm Wineries program sponsored by the Connecticut Farm Wine Development Council. We discovered this great program, which offers a drawing to win a 13 day trip to Spain for visiting 16 wineries, by visiting our local winery, Gouveia Vineyards.    We happen to love wine, and while, like most wine drinkers, we’re familiar with names like Beringer, Kendall-Jackson, and Robert Mondavi, we thought it would be nice for our local readers (and not so local readers, too!) to get acquainted with the wineries and vineyards right here in our own backyard. The first stop on the Connecticut Wine Trail will be, appropriately enough, Gouveia Vineyards.   Established in 1999 and opened to the public in 2004, Gouv...

Update on Construction of Wallingford Sonic I just wanted to post a little update regarding the progress of the Wallingford Sonic Drive-In construction. Back on May 17th I attended the ground breaking ceremony for the new restaurant, and at that time the site looked like this:   Lots of bare ground and nothing really going on. So, yesterday I drove by and took a few shots of what’s been done so far:       I know, still not much to look at, but it shows some progress being made in erecting the building and supports for the canopy. As far as we have heard, Sonic of CT is still shooting for a grand opening during the 4th of July weekend, but I have a gut feeling that deadline won’t be met, judging by the level of completion and that the 4th of July is only 12 days away, but I guess we’ll s...

Sonic of CT Breaks Ground for New Wallingford Drive-In Well, whatever speculation there might have been about the coming of Sonic to Wallingford is officially over. At 3PM Monday afternoon, dignitaries from Sonic, the Mesite family and local government gathered together for a ground breaking ceremony to herald the coming of the long-awaited eatery.   Robert Mesite, his brother Ralph, sister Gina and mother Rosalie were all on hand, as well as his wife and children, several Sonic officials, Wallingford Mayor William Dickinson, Senator Len Fasano and Representative Mary Fritz. Gina made some opening remarks, followed by Robert and Ralph. Then the mike was turned over to the politicos who offered congratulations and well wishes.   The family then took the ceremonial spades and dug into the...

Wallingford Sonic Drive-In Closer to Reality Today on their Facebook page, Sonic of CT posted some news that is sure to please the hungry multitudes that have been waiting with bated breath for the popular eatery to open. According to their post, owner and developer Robert Mesite plans to break ground for the new restaurant within the week, and an opening date is anticipated within the following two months. That would place the serving of the first burger and Cherry Limeade sometime in July, a little behind the June opening that was originally hoped for. But at least now there's a time frame in place, giving some definite form to the upcoming schedule of events. Can the Grand Opening be far behind?? Stay tuned to this space for additional updates as they come available! (Sonic trivia: d...

On the way to perform my weekly task at the Wallingford Stop & Shop today, I saw a man standing near the entrance soliciting donations, a huge water cooler bottle in front of him that was filling quickly with offerings. This in itself is not unusual; every Sunday you can see a bevy of donation seekers camped at the entrance to the store, from the VFW to the Girl Scouts, various school organizations and civic groups. But I recognized this man as I started past him, and I did a double take and stopped short. Jason Zandri, author of From the Mind of Jason Zandri and one of Wallingford’s staunchest advocates, was hard at work at his latest cause, raising money to allow Wallingford to continue their 50-year tradition of a Fourth of July fireworks display. Why, you ask? Well, it seems like o...

The HarrimanTeam is Now Harriman Real Estate When Pat and I first entered the Real Estate world, we often spoke of someday having our own company, something we could build and mold into a company we could be proud of. We worked hard building our business under some great companies: Prudential, ERA and most recently, William Raveis Real Estate. We learned a lot from each of them and had the opportunity to work with some fantastic agents along the way. We have been fortunate to have had a fairly successful real estate career, and over the past few years we've worked hard through our various web sites and social media presence to build The Harriman Team into a recognizable brand. Now, the time has come for us to branch out on our own. We've grown professionally, and personally, to the poin...

Wallingford Sonic Drive-In Update Back in July, we posted the news about a Sonic Drive-In restaurant possibly coming to Wallingford. That news took another step towards reality today with the report that Robert Mesite, owner of the Villa Capri and now-gone Yankee Silversmith restaurants has submitted a site plan for Connecticut's first Sonic Drive-In to be built on the vacant lot where his landmark Yankee Silversmith once stood. The proposal is for a 1,700 square foot restaurant with no indoor seating (they roller skate the food to your car, remember?) that Mesite hopes will be completed by next spring. Mesite and his family are also reportedly in negotiations to bring franchises to several other locations in the state as well, so even though Wallingford is fairly centrally located in ...

This Veteran's Day, The Harriman Team would like to take this opportunity to stop a minute and thank all the veterans, past and present, who have helped keep this great country free. As we have said in the past, we have a close connection to the military: I am a Viet Nam veteran, Pat was a military wife, and we have children who either are now or have been in the service. For all our veterans do for us, we owe it to them to take a few moments out of our busy schedules to thank them for what they do for us. The sacrifices they make, the hardships they endure, and the courage they display all entitle them to our respect, esteem and admiration. Also, our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones in the recent shootings at Fort Hood, Texas. It's bad enough to lose someone close ...

Tomorrow, September 11th, 2009, marks the 8th anniversary of one of the grimmest chapters in American history, the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. The horror of that day, and the days that followed, are forever burned into our collective consciousness. While our nation as a whole has moved on from that day, the pain and anguish still linger and many localities hold memorial services and events commemorating the lives that were lost and irreparably changed on that day. Several local towns are planning memorial events, so we have taken the liberty to list here the ones we know of (as reported by the Meriden Record-Journal and Jason Zandri in his blog): Meriden: City of Meriden 9/11 Memorial Service, Friday, 7 p.m., New Life Church, 262 Bee St. Wallingford: 9/11 Remem...
