Recycling on Earth Day and Every Day  Perhaps one of the easiest ways for consumers to help the environment is to recycle. In Connecticut recycling is mandatory.  Everyone resident, business, and all private and public agencies and institutions MUST recycle.  IT IS THE LAW!  Did you know that recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours?  Or that Americans throw away enough steel every year to build all the new cars made in America?  Tin cans are actually 99% steel with only a thin layer of tin to prevent rusting.  Then there's the ubiquitous plastic water bottle.  Americans use 4 million plastic bottle every HOUR!  But, only 1 in every 4 bottles is recycled.  According to Connecticut law the following items must be recycled: Glass Food and...

The Shelton CT condo market report for March 2010 shows sales were UP 125% from February 2009.  Average list and selling prices were down 21% and 23% respectively.  However, one $985,000 sale in 2009 brought the average up considerably for 2009.   Looking at the median sales shows a more realistic picture of the market with the 2010 median sale of $325,000 being down only 5% from last year's median of $343,750. Days on the market showed a 203% increase from last year, but again, that figure was skewed by three condos on the market from 173-748 days.  Median days on the market shows a figure of 78 days for this March, up 44% instead. The high sale was in Well Spring Estates (Rushbrooke Lane)  at $487,000, and the low sale was in Cedar Grove (Coram Road) at $205,000. Where were all the Sh...

Is it Shelton, CT or is it Huntington, CT? - The Tale of Two Towns Questions and confusion about whether Shelton, CT and Huntington, CT are two distinct areas - or not -- come up everyday.  They are, in fact, one and the same, under the umbrella of the city of Shelton, CT and zip code 06484.   A little history -- Shelton split from Stratford in 1789 and became Huntington, named for Connecticut governor Samuel Huntington.  Down by the Housatonic River, a manufacturing village started in the 1860s and was named after the Shelton Company's founder, Edward Shelton. He also  founded the Ousatonic (not a typo!) Water Company on the Housatonic River and helped make Shelton a flourishing manufacturing mecca. Then -- The borough of Shelton, due to its booming growth,  incorporated as a city in 1...

What's all the Buzz About in Shelton CT? I have been a resident of Connecticut my entire life and have lived in Shelton CT the last 25 years.  After all that time in one place, I have a pretty good handle on Shelton in general and the housing market, roads, government, activities, schools and businesses in particular.  I have to admit, though, that I do not know everything that is going on, (who does?)  but I do try to keep abreast of what is happening.  Even so, I can't always find everything I want in one place. I have not really spent a lot of time on Facebook yet.  I have done some connecting here and there when I have some free time. I learned recently, though, about Facebook Fan Pages.  I thought that creating and maintaining a fan page for Shelton CT would be a great place to pos...
