But here’s where it gets a little interesting—why is it spelled that way? Some say it’s a nod to Spanish influence, while others think it might’ve been a misspelling.    The Quiet Adventure: Finding Home in CotopaxiEdited fiction from A.I. and agent Dena StevensA New Beginning in CotopaxiMargaret and Henry Green had spent most of their lives in the bustling suburbs of Denver, where the streets never seemed to sleep, and the skyline was always glittering. That’s when Cotopaxi, Colorado, entered their lives.Cotopaxi wasn’t a place they had ever considered before. Margaret had stumbled upon it by chance while searching online for small, scenic Colorado towns. The pictures had captivated her—the...

The Dos and Don’ts of living in a Small Town or Community in Colorado. Based on personal experiences, experiences of past clients, and things I hear around my own small town. Let’s define “small town” as less than 5000 residents, one 4 way stop, and no soda machine.   Don’t’s: Don’t skip the first step on the Do’s side Don’t assume anything! Including community services like fire, ambulance, or mail.Don’t assume deliveries happen in your area daily or even at all. Don’t assume deliveries happen past your community gate or down your very long gated driveway. Even with permission. Don’t think that your new fence will be good with the neighbors, town or community. The “we have always done this way” mentality may exist. Don’t assume you’re not in a flood plain. It surprises me all the time ...

Periodically the small town of Coal Creek Colorado does a community coffee. Most recently these coffee conversations have been held on Thursday mornings in the old fire station. The point of the coffee is to get to know your neighbors. The conversation will jump from “who did this” to “who is responsible for that” and a few “can you believe it” and “Did you know” thrown into the mix.The most recent incarnation of this coffee clutch has been happening Fall of 2019. I’ve been attending as I can and getting to meet my new neighbors. I’ve only lived in this town of approx 400 residence for about a year and a half. One of the things I learned today: Not only does Fremont County have a reverse 911 system but so does the town of Coal Creek. Also learned today: we may need a new town hall and g...
