Buy a Log Home in Red Feather Lakes So, you've decided you want to purchase a log home in the Red Feather Lakes area!  The good news is there are about 40 presently on the market. I love log homes as you do, but once I worked with a buyer who exclaimed, "I don't want a log home, they're too drafty!"  He must have had the same experience that I did many years ago when renting a 100 year old log cabin. That cabin was so old that the chinking had fallen out in one place and you could actually see the sky from inside the house! Thankfully, most newer log homes are engineered and built very well; log home construction has come a long way since the pioneer days of the one room log cabin.  All across America there are log homes, and they blend well with the mountainous terrain and open valleys...

Last year I posted an article about the possible closure of the Red Feather Lakes Elementary School. . Now we can jump for joy! . There were some mighty and formidable warriors in our community who worked tirelessly to fight the closing, gather very detailed and necessary financial information, attend an abundance of meetings and I'm happy to report that those efforts paid off! :-) The unanimous recommendation of the feasibility committee is that the Red Feather Lakes School will remain open! :-) I would like to personally thank those that worked so hard on our behalf and who have secured a place in our community for our elementary and pre-school children and their families! ~ Thank you!     We're jumping for joy! *************************************************************************...

Last weekend,  I had the pleasure of showing a few homes in Glacier View Meadows and Red Feather Lakes Village.  I had contacted the buyers about a new listing on the market and they wanted to see it. They were surprised to find very little snow up here. Because of snow  concerns, they had put off their plans to look for property until Spring! Spring is when we usually get the big snows.  March in particular can be the snowiest month.  I have seen it snow as late as Memorial Day!  There wasn't much accumulation on that Memorial Day, but it was cold, wet and miserable just the same. I'm guilty of posting only photographs of big snowfalls and icicles in winter. I tend not to post photos of brown grass and dry roads; somehow I just don't find that quite as attractive! BUT, a dry road is ac...

Red Feather Lakes is located in Larimer County, Colorado and enjoys between 300 and 320 days of sunshine each year. Yesterday morning, the clouds hung heavily on the mountain tops, we had fog, freezing drizzle, icy roads and a mostly grey day. It was a quiet day in the office yesterday.  I joked when my Broker called in for her messages that I felt like the lonely Maytag repairman, as no one had called in the first hour that I was there. I guess not many people were thinking about buying their mountain homes in Colorado...well, maybe they were, they were just probably online :-)   Days like yesterday are few, and today we have our blue skies and sunshine back again.  January is almost over and we are only a few days away from Groundhog Day. . The largest and most well known celebration ...

I love to show people around in the Village of Red Feather Lakes,  this is just a glimpse of what you might find when you come to visit. When you first drive into the Village of Red Feather Lakes you will pass Ramona Lake on your right and if it's January, you may see several fishermen out on the ice.  I didn't get out there and see if the fishing was good this day, but most fishermen will tell you "a bad day of fishing is still better than a good day of work". Up ahead is Main Street, turn right on Main and turn right again onto Ramona Dr. which runs alongside the shoreline of beautiful Lake Ramona and you will come to the Trout Lodge. The Trout Lodge was built in 1930 and is a long time fixture in Red Feather Lakes.  Although it has been renovated over the years, it still maintains it...

The Greening of Red Feather, in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado The Greening of Red Feather is always a festive event in our little Village. The Holiday Craft fair with over 30 booths offers a great opportunity for finding some unique gifts for those on your shopping list. Among the items for sale are pottery, cutlery, wood crafts, carvings, photography, jewelry, hand- crafted Christmas items, paintings, home-baked goodies, Christmas wreaths and (one of my favorites) homemade soap from Shiloh Soapworks.  I always stock up on this pure and fragrant soap; there are so many scents to choose and they make great little gifts and stocking stuffers.  It's something I look forward to, so I hope she will have a booth there this year too! The festivities stretch throughout the Village, in the P.O.A. ...

The Colorado Division of Wildlife says that "Bears have people problems" Although the "Bear Activity" is moderate in the Red Feather Lakes area, in other parts of Colorado, there have been some pretty exciting and grisly accounts of bear encounters. Recently, a bear decided to go for a stroll in an Aspen fur shop, looked around, and then left!  I guess he didn't see anything he liked there, or perhaps it was too hot outside to purchase a fur? Another bear decided to break into a house while the family slept, and help himself to all the items in the pantry! Sadly, it was reported last week, that a 74 year old woman was killed by a bear near Ouray, Colorado. Two bears were killed by law enforcement, too.  One was the murderous male bear weighing 400 pounds, and another aggressive but inno...

Within the quaint Village of Red Feather Lakes there is a road that, when first traveled,  will surprise and delight you.  The Villagers have named it Elf Lane.                   You have to drive very slowly, and you will see the magic hidden within the trees.    The property on each side of the road is private property, yet somehow, the elves and gnomes and other creatures of the forest appear in spite of the no trespassing signs posted on the trees.  There is something very enchanting about Elf Lane. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mary Douglas, your Mountain Broker-Associate and REALTOR® United Country  Ponderosa Realty, Red Feather Lakes, CO www.redfeatherlakes.com ---800-531-2195 "A Day in the Mountains will always soothe your city soul" The information conta...

Lack of oxygen causes High-Altitude sickness.  At higher altitudes the air becomes "thinner," which means there is less oxygen is in the atmosphere. With each breath, you get less oxygen in your lungs so the amount of oxygen in your blood declines, also. When someone coming from a lower elevation feels sick at high altitudes, it's called High- Altitude sickness or Mountain sickness. There's a medical term for it too, but we'll leave that one for the doctors. The symptoms usually become noticeable around 7,000 or 8,000 feet. People who have heart or lung disease may experience symptoms at even lower elevations. This post is not about climbing Mount Everest or Annapurna! (the higher the altitude, the greater the effects) and I'm not a doctor, but our own Red Feather Lakes doctor, Dr. Jani...
