By Tyler Haynie Right on the edge of gorgeous Manitou Springs lies an ascending beast known as the Incline. In essence, the incline is merely a really long stretch of railroad ties, but for a couple decades now, the locals have been walking up and down it like a staircase. Coupled with the altitude, the brutal angle it's set on, and the fact that it ascends over 2,000 feet into the sky, it presents a pretty intimidating challenge. It climbs alongside Barr Trail, the path that leads directly to the top of one of Colorado's most famous 14'ers, Pikes Peak. While this may not be for the weak at heart, all it takes is determination. And for those who feel they have bitten off a bit more than they can chew, there is a point halfway up that people can revert to Barr Trail either to go back dow...

Emma Crawford Coffin Race ~ Manitou Springs It must have been frightening to be 17, engaged, and suffering from the dreaded disease of tuberculosis.  Emma Crawford was courageous of spirit, and in 1889 she and her family, as did many hundreds of others, moved in the hopes that the dry mountain air and the healing waters of Manitou Springs would cure her consumption.  Emma and her mother were Spiritualists, and both believed that Native American spirits were guiding them.  Emma lived with her family on Ruxton Avenue, and walked constantly thru the surrounding hills of Manitou Springs.  On one such journey up Red Mountain, Emma Crawford had a vision.  With a frightful aversion to cemeteries, Emma tied a scarf to a tree near the summit where her spirit guide had appeared, and made it known...

There are two different land areas being talked about in reference to Manitou Springs. The smaller area is marked by the fairly comparable boundaries of: The City of Manitou Springs The Pikes Peak Association of Realtors MLS area designation for Manitou Springs – abbreviated “MAN” And zip code 80829 The broader land area that is sometimes being referred to, is that served by the Manitou Springs School District 14. It includes the core zip code 80829 and the communities further to the Northwest on U.S. Highway 24, of Cascade, Chipita Park, Green Mountain Falls, and Crystola. These communities are served by the Manitou Springs Districts’ Ute Pass Elementary. For the following numbers I’ll stick to the smaller core area of zip code 80829. The estimated population is approaching 7,000 resid...

Colorado Springs Coffee Shops – Marika’s Recently I had a less-than-pleasant experience at Panera Bread, which set me on a quest to find wonderfully inviting Colorado Springs Coffee Shops in which to read, write, work, or meet friends.  I found near-perfection in nearby Manitou Springs, and when my quest is done, it may just be my ‘place of choice.’  Manitou Springs is a unique and eclectic town less than fifteen minutes from Downtown Colorado Springs.  My wonderfully patient husband walked thru the entrance to Marika’s and turned and smiled at me and said, “Just your kind of place.”  Indeed, it was a little slice of Nirvana, and exactly what I have been looking for.  Located at 739 Manitou Avenue in the heart of town, Marika’s is located in an historic building and is inviting and cozy...

The key to success in real estate is very simple.   It is all about attitude.   You must believe in yourself.    You must believe that you can do what you put your mind to.   Then, you must do it - come hell or high water, as my grandmother would say.    If something isn’t working, try something else.    Look at rejection and/or problems as necessary obstacles that you must navigate your way through in order to accomplish your goal.    Before long, you will find that your definition of a problem or “challenge” will change the more successful that you become.   Initially, a problem might be that a prospective buyer doesn’t show up for an appointment or can’t qualify for financing.  Later on, that is just part of the business.  A real problem might be when the house burns down the day bef...

It’s surreal.  Just over one week ago Jake (23) & Rebecca (26) exchanged their marriage vows during their wedding ceremony at the Briarhurst Manor Estates in Manitou Springs around 7 pm. Two weeks prior to this event it had been raining nearly every afternoon.  And when I refer to raining, it has been down pouring, something we’ve haven’t really experienced in Colorado for many years, as with nearly every part of our country where the change in weather patterns has been very dramatic. Anyway, we experienced a break from the rain, as the evening was gorgeous.  Temperatures were in the low 70’s, the sky was lit with the stars; there was no wind, no bugs and no interruptions.  The outside lighting accented the glory of the event. If you live in Colorado Springs and require a place to cond...

One of the "disadvantages" of living in a state with so much outdoor recreation & a year-round climate that makes it conducive to exploring all types of recreation (almost on a year-round basis) are the aches & pains that come from exercise ~ or shall we say, "playing outside".  Whether it is snow skiing in the winter (although Arapahoe Basin is always the challenge with skiing on July 4th in the Basin), bike riding (mountain or road), running, rock climbing, mountain climbing, hiking, water skiing in the summer, golf, tennis, soccer, baseball/softball, swimming and all the water sports that go with that.  I am sure I am forgetting a few but you get the drift. What do we do the next day after playing with any of the above?  One answer is a great little find in Manitou Springs called Sal...

Manitou Springs is a suburb of Colorado Springs that has its own personality.  The first thing that would come to mind if you mention Manitou is that it is an upscale artsy community, lots of people who are free thinkers, artists, lost-in-time-hippies, some just 'regular' people, and people who are looking for a slower lifestyle. My husband and I met friends there this weekend, and we were strolling along the AVE.  As we passed a couple that had time-warped to the 60s, I heard someone say, "Mimi?! Mimi Foster!"  I turned and smiled (my kids would have called it my fake smile), not at all recognizing the couple standing in front of me.  "Hey, Mimi!  How ARE you?"  Still not showing any sign of recognition, he said, "It's ME, CLARK!"He could sense my confusion as I looked at the lady with ...

Below are a few recent snapshots of Manitou Springs.  Manitou Springs is nestled between Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak.  Manitou Springs has been described by the New York Times as a Hippie Mayberry.                                    The 2011 Market Data below is through Friday June 17, 2011.  DOM = days on market.  Despite the slight flaw with the spreadsheet above, June has started off to be a good month for home sellers.  Four homes have already closed.  The low sales price was $157,000.  The high sales price was $365,000. Six homes are currently under contract.    Some of the homes that have been on the market for a while are selling.   However, the data shows that some houses are going under contract within a month of being put on the market.  As the chart below shows, buyers ha...

Colorado is an exceptionally beautiful state.    There is something liberating about the smell of fresh air, the feel of the wind blowing in your face and simply breathtaking views.  Consider the following ways to truly experience Colorado.   1.    See Colorado from the back of a horse.   A horse allows you to see some of the more remote and inaccessible areas.    2.    Challenge yourself and ride a bike.  This is a very, very popular activity in Colorado Springs.  (You can see this cyclist in the video below also.  He makes cycling on hilly roads look easy.)      3.   Ride a bike...on a motorcycle you can really cover some ground.  The short, experiamental video below was taken from the back of a Harley Davidison motorcyle.  We started in Manitou Springs, worked our way along Gold Camp...

Take time to stop and smell the roses.  It's a saying that we've all heard.  But do we?  Sometimes in life there are so many things to occupy our attention.  What do we choose to focus on?  While walking to the Incline in Manitou Springs one morning, I noticed this beautiful bed of poppies.  It was located outside of one of the shops on the edge of the downtown shopping district.  I thought it contributed to the charming appeal of Manitou's historical area.                    Having spent a year in Afghanistan, where poppies were used to produce opium, which in turn funded the Taliban, I found the poppies to be very beautiful, but also interesting to see in Colorado.  So, I did a little research.  I found out that most varieties of poppies do no contain opium.    Most poppies grown in C...

The New York Times described Manitou Springs, CO as "Hippie Mayberry."  I'll be the first to admit, it is a VERY interesting little town.  Manitou Springs is nestled between Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak.  It is maybe 10-15 minutes from downtown Colorado Springs.     http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/10/19/travel/escapes/19american.html  This post will be the first in a series of posts that will offer a glimpse of what this diverse, fun little town is like.      Manitou Springs is home to The Incline, which also happens to have been featured in the sports section of the New York Times.  http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/sports/03iht-olytrain.1.14965551.html?_r=2  "The Incline Pushes Athletes to the Limit.  One mile....going up 2,000 ft.  The New York Times article does a great job of exp...

History comes alive with every foot of elevation gain as you ride the Cog Railway up to the top of Pikes Peak. If 9 miles of hiking to the top of Pikes Peak sounds daunting, and the thought of driving on a gravel and dirt road with sheer cliff drop offs has you white knuckling your steering wheel, then the Cog train is for you! Conventional railroads use the friction of wheels upon the rails, called “adhesion”, to provide locomotive power. A cog, or rack, railroad uses a gear, “cog wheel”, meshing into a special rack rail (mounted in the middle between the outer rails) to climb much steeper grades than those possible with a standard adhesion railroad. An adhesion railroad can only climb grades of 4 to 6%, with very short sections of up to 9%. A “rack” railroad can climb grades of up to...
