~                                                                                       You can talk about moving to the mountains until the cows come home.... The aspen are turning a beautiful shade of gold and the ranchers are moving their cattle from the summer high pasture down the road back home. Yesterday morning I saw only one driver trying to make his way past the bovine traffic jam(sometimes they cause a small slow down in your morning commute) but look at it this way, it's the only reason for a traffic jam and it only happens twice a year. You can talk about getting out of your city traffic jams and . You can talk about moving to the mountains ‘til the cows come home.............. but guess what?  They're already home.   Maybe it's time to stop talking about it and get a mooo...

This is not a good thing.  The Kid's Fishing Contest at Batterson Lake was today! .....so now I have to make a world-wide apology because I was certain that it was tomorrow! (I changed my original post to today's date on the off chance that someone would read it in time this morning !) My mistake! May a swarm of bees descend upon me- - - wait that's already happened! Thank Goodness most of the area residents knew the fishing contest was today because there was an excellent turnout! I suspect the most fun about the fishing contest is spending the morning at the lake with your family, but little angler competitors would say the most fun about the fishing contest is winning a prize! On the slim chance that you relied solely on me for this information and you are planning on fishing tomorro...

We are very fortunate to have Debbie Sunken D.V.M. of Country Companions in our Northern Larimer County, Colorado area. Although many veterinarians across the country travel to assist large animals, I was happy when I found Dr. Sunken because she also visits small animals in their homes. For things such as vaccinations, and check- ups, she makes house calls and she's well equipped with a huge mobile surgery unit that comes to your home when surgery is needed also. Our dog, Charley, was due for her rabies vaccine today.  Thanks to Dr. Sunken, there was no need to put the hairy dog in the car (although she would have loved it) and drive to town. Our previous dog, Cody, was terrified when I used to take her to the vet.   I was a little afraid, too because Cody didn't like other dogs at all...

Opuntia - commonly known as Prickly Pear The Cacti that I have always known as Prickly Pear are blooming in Livermore, Colorado.  The flowers appear so delicate but if your skin should touch what's underneath -  it hurts!  They have two kinds of spines, one stays put, while the other shorter ones will stick into your skin and stay there! OUCH! Native Americans used the fruit of the Prickly Pear for food, medicine and to make alcohol among other things. There are about 200 different species of Opuntia (Prickly Pear) and they can be found in almost every State in the country. The ones up here are short and grow low to the ground.  I think their flower is very beautiful. **************************************************************** Mary Douglas, your Mountain Broker-Associate and REALTO...

When it's time to think about selling your Glacier View Meadows home, turn to your local real estate agents at Ponderosa Realty for help. Glacier View Meadows has often been referred to as a bedroom community of Fort Collins because we are close enough to town to commute to work.   I know that when I worked 40 hours a week in Fort Collins, my main focus was down the hill... In fact, if you drive that road long enough, your car almost turns itself automatically and heads down the hill! LOL When it's time to sell your Glacier View Meadows home, turning your car up the hill toward the Ponderosa Realty office might be the best idea yet and it's a shorter drive too! There are several advantages to listing your home with Ponderosa Realty, your local real estate office. We are familiar with th...

About Clarabelle and How I learned that deer in Glacier View Meadows have no sense of humor. Clarabelle "planted" red plastic tulips all along her fence line.  Our crazy eccentric 80 year old landlady, always commented on how pretty her (red plastic) tulips were, and I always agreed - after all, they made her happy. I loved the way her bright blue eyes sparkled and the way her white hair went every which way on top of her crazy little head.  I also loved listening to her stories from years gone by....  She was so proud of those red plastic tulips! Secretly, I thought she was just plumb loco, but then I was only 20 years old.   Fast forward about 24 years when we first moved to Glacier View Meadows.  After a herd of marauding deer wiped out my beautiful flower pots on our front deck, I b...

Green Mountain Meadows another area to explore in Livermore, CO. Driving west along the Red Feather Lakes Highway (W. County Rd. 74E) you will see Green Mountain Meadows situated to the North. For your reference, most of Glacier View Meadows, a subdivision I write  about  often lies to the South of the county road. Green Mountain Meadows is popular because of larger home sites ranging from 10 to 35 acres. Neighboring residences are further away from one another along the private roads within this mountain subdivision. Open spaces and huge rock outcroppings punctuate the landscape in typical Livermore style. Gordon Creek runs through Green Mountain Meadows.  In March you can't see the green tall grasses, yet.  The landscape still lies dormant under the most recent snow but will soon spri...

Easy Lawn Maintenance Tip:  Forget About It in Glacier View Meadows! It was a long winter.  I heard you spent way too much time with your snow shovel last season!  Many Coloradoans are shoveling today after the last Spring storm dumped several inches of new snow upon us! THE GOOD NEWS: soon, your snow shovel will be forgotten. THE BAD NEWS: other shovels, rakes, lawn mowers, trowels and assorted implements of extreme backache are waiting to take their rightful place in front again. I realize some folks like all that hard work; I used to be one of them.  Nothing gave me more pleasure than watching the sprinklers go round over our beautiful, freshly mowed lawn; the battle of the unruly lawn won for another day. BUT, if you have grown tired of the battle and all that yard work doesn't seem...

This morning my Google Alerts brought me to an article about a house fire in Glacier View Meadows.  The tenants were at work when the midday fire on Monday totally destroyed their home. Eight pets were killed in the fire, 5 dogs and 3 cats. This is very devastating news.  I can't imagine the heartbreak of losing my pets in such a terrible way. I saw the smoke from my kitchen window on Monday and assumed they were burning the slash pile.  It seemed odd that it would be burned on a breezy day, but I didn't give it a second thought. From my view it looked like that was the correct location. Assuming it was the slash pile; I grabbed my camera to take a few pictures and merrily continued my day.  I didn't think for a second that I should report the smoke or investigate further.   The guilt I...

It's Nine Below Zero in Glacier View Meadows Subdivision The temperature is 9 below zero on this cold December evening.  I'm thinking about the Battersons, a pioneer family in this area, and the hardship, loss and success they found here.  I pass the Batterson Barn and the little grave, one on each side of the county road, and can only imagine the courage and the mettle they possessed.  In 1873, Solomon and Mary Batterson were heading west to California, along with their 3 children, Billy, Mina, and Azubah Emma.  They drove 2 wagon teams and 8 head of cattle. When they arrived here, they liked this country and decided to settle 10 miles west of Livermore, Colorado. In the early years, there wasn't a lot of money so Solomon and Billy hunted and sold venison , elk and mountain sheep for 9...

All around the Red Feather Lakes area, there are huge rock outcroppings.  Geologists might be able to explain how they got here, or what natural pre-historic event caused them; I'm not a geologist, so I don't know.  Still, no matter where I go I am always amazed by them and how many there are.  They are everywhere! No lawn mowing required here: Today, I was on a mission to take more inside photos of a house for an out of state buyer.  I was happy to do it for them, because there is always something beautiful to see in Glacier View Meadows Subdivision; for instance: Manhead Mountain   I don't how it got its name.  From this angle it reminds me more of a snowball (one of those gross marshmallow treats covered in coconut) than it does a man's head.   Here is another interesting rock outcro...

Glacier View Meadows, is a beautiful mountain subdivision near Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. Most of the roads within the subdivision are named after mountains in Colorado, and 28 of those roads are named after "Fourteeners". A "Fourteener" is a Mountain whose peak is over 14,000 feet in elevation.  In addition to the elevation, the peak must be 300 feet above any saddle which connects it to another nearby mountain. The greatest number of the Nation's "Fourteeners" are in Colorado, however there are higher mountains in Alaska, California and Washington. 55 Colorado Peaks rise high into the clouds above 14,000 feet, that is 2 1/2 vertical miles above sea level, and well above timberline! Climbing all of the Fourteeners is popular among mountaineers. The Colorado Mountain Club is the offi...

Would YOU like more liver? I don't know about you, but two words that I would never use in a sentence together would be "more" and "liver", unless I said "I don't want any MORE LIVER, ever." Yet, my zip code is LIVERMORE, Colorado! Livermore is approximately 25 miles Northwest of Fort Collins, Colorado, just East of Red Feather Lakes, and about 50 miles south of Laramie Wyoming. Livermore was founded as a ranching community and has retained much of that character. The lovely Livermore valley is located north of LaPorte and just west of Highway 287. Livermore is really not a town anymore, but a zip code, consisting of several Mountain Subdivisions, huge ranches and tons of open space.  The North Fork of the Cache La Poudre River runs through the Livermore Valley. driving east into the Li...
