When You Can Eat in Denver? I had lunch today with a friend and we decided to go to an old favorite restaurant, The Washington Park Grille. This neighborhood hang-out is in the heart of the Washington Park neighborhood in Denver. It’s on a lovely block of shops and restaurants called “Old South Gaylord Street.” The Wash Park Grill, as locals call it, has a menu for everyone. At lunch you can choose from soups, salads and terrific sandwiches. The Smoked Turkey Panini is tdf (and loaded with calories.) Today I avoided the sandwich and had soup and a small green salad, which they make with almonds, dried cranberries and a terrific raspberry vinegar dressing. On nice evenings, my husband and I walk over to Wash Park for a pleasant evening dinner. Their patio is open spring through fall and...

We have the opportunity to eat out at least twice a month, sometimes more. Not that I’m a lousy cook, but I’m a lazy cook. One of our favorite Denver restaurants is Barolo Grill at 6th Avenue and St. Paul Street in Cherry Creek North. What a spectacular meal! Upgrade Your Italian, si? The Barolo Grill is upscale Italian, from the northern areas of Italy. No spaghetti and red sauce here, go to Saucy Noodle in Bonnie Brae if you want that. At Barolo, you’ll enjoy a gourmet take on veal, duck, lamb and seafood as well as couple of excellent vegetarian choices. The risotto is divine and their wine list is superb. After a visit to Barolo a few years back, we became Rosso di Montalcino fans, and buy a bottle whenever we can. Intimate with Italy The owners of Barolo close their restaurant for ...

An article from the Denver Business Journal, reports that Denver’s planning department is writing the first major update to the city’s zoning code in more than 50 years.  According to the Zoning Code Task Force, a draft of the code is expected this fall, and the final version is expected to go into effect in 2009.  Peter Park, manager of the City and County of Denver planning officials, hopes the new form- and context-based code will make zoning in Denver easier and more flexible, and maintain the character of the city’s diverse urban neighborhoods.  What a building looks like, instead of how it is used, and how a building fits with the neighborhood around it, are 2 of the major components of the new zoning provisions.  Chris Crosby, executive vice president at The Nichols Partnership I...

Perception? Reality? What is it that drives human behavior? One of my favorite Denver Post columnists, Al Lewis, wrote today about perception. He believes that reality came first, perception is based on the reality we’re experiencing. I’m paraphrasing, of course, so you may want to read it yourself. Al makes some compelling points, and it’s been a looong time since I took college economics, psychology or sociology. But I do feel that things aren’t as black and white as all that. Realtors are often blamed for being Pollyanna, only wanting to put a positive spin on things. We’ve all been griping about the media coverage of the real estate market over the past year or so. It’s the unbalanced nature of the coverage that gets me. I don’t dispute the facts when they’re reported - number of h...

One of the world's best architects has designed a luxury condominium development in the heart of Denver that not only succeeds as a functional and stylish living space, but he has also managed to create an architectural work of art that is equal to any of the pieces one might find at the nearby Denver Museum of Art. Daniel Libeskind has been designing cutting edge buildings around the globe for many years, and he recently completed work on an innovative new wing at the Denver Museum of Art. He used that project as inspiration for his work on the Museum Residences, which not only includes upscale condos, but also features an entire floor dedicated to retail space. The building of the Museum Residences was part of a joint venture between Corporex and Mile High Development, and was complet...

If you are any type of golf fan and are around Denver, you probably already know that next week the PGA Men's Senior Open will be held in Colorado Springs at the Broadmoor. Personally I am very excited about this - I received two tickets myself for the Open for Christmas, and it should be fun.  In years past I had been a regular at The International, and now that is gone it is great to get some serious golf here again.  Originally I was planning to take my son but he will now be visiting his cousins out of state so instead one of my lucky friends is scoring the extra ticket. Some of the big names playing in the Open that I am most looking forward to are Greg Norman, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw and Mark O'Meara- a full list of players is here. After Greg Norman'...

Developer splits; first buildings delayed to 2011 By John Rebchook, Rocky Mountain News Thanks to the sluggish economy, you won't be seeing any new buildings at the $1 billion Gates Rubber redevelopment until 2011, a year later than planned. In February, the Rocky Mountain News reported that the developer, an entity created by Chicago-based Joseph Freed, had split from the 50-acre project, which is owned and being cleaned up for contaminants by Cherokee Denver. At that time, Cherokee President Ferd Belz said he was open to having the Joseph Freed group, called Santa Fe Denver 125 LLC, possibly play a smaller role at the Gates site, called Metropolitan Gardens. But no more. "We have pretty much agreed to go our separate ways," Belz said. Since the two groups have split, architects and ge...

An article from The Denver Post, reports that local merchants define the South Broadway neighborhood as the stretch of Broadway from south of Sixth Avenue to just north of the Interstate 25 interchange.  Many in the neighborhood refer to it as SoBo and the strip is in the midst of a major transition.  Projects like the revitalization of the former Gates Rubber plant will help to quicken the strip's renovations.  The project will add new homes, stores and a movie theater courtesy of Robert Redford's Sundance company.  According to Mary Beth Jenkins, president of the Laramie Co., a commercial real estate brokerage, South Broadway has historically been the main artery into downtown Denver.  She said, "Broadway, as a retail corridor, is linking downtown with residential neighborhoods.  It's...

Denver, Colorado isn't perfect. We have a Brown Cloud, it snowed on Mother's Day and I-25 rush hour traffic is the pits. But there's something we have here that is pretty darn special. And no, it's not the Democratic National Convention, coming soon to my fair city. It's July 22nd and I have NO mosquito bites! Zero! Haven't had even one all summer. You can safely and comfortably go outside, any time of the day, sans bug spray, with no worries of being dive-bombed by nasty flying creatures. Neither do my dogs don't have fleas or ticks, and we rarely do termite inspections here. Definitely something to love about Denver, Colorado.

Denver Living - Adventure At Lair O’ The Bear Last weekend we had a little family adventure time and we decided to take our very first Colorado Outdoor Outing with our new puppy.  He had recently finished his puppy shots & we had the green light to pretty much take him wherever.  So we did.  I had been extremely busy the week prior with Denver relocation clients, so I was thrilled to have some downtime with my family. We decided to try out one of our favorite stand-bys - Lair O' the Bear Park in Bear Creek Canyon- located just west of Morrison in Jefferson County.  We have been there many times over the years, it was one of the first places we have taken out kids hiking and it seemed rather appropriate that it be Tully's first grand adventure as well.  His favorite part (other than the ...

As the temps in Denver near 100 this weekend and as I plan my own trip to Water World  with my family for next week (we are going on Monday is the weather cooperates) -  I thought I would re-post this list that I made from last summer of Denver Area Water Parks. My kids are very excite about our upcoming visit to Water World and have already visited their map online to figure out where they want to "sit" (although we don't  do much sitting) and what rides they want to ride first. It sounds like we will be heading to Voyage To The Center of The Earth, first.  If you are going to try out Water World - there is a great 4 pack offer available through King Soopers that also includes lunch. The picture below is from Pirates Cove in Englewood, Colorado. Enjoy!   Denver is Hot - Where Do you go...

(Me and my son, DJ on the Ski Train) I love the ski train.  It is a fantastic value.  It departs Union Station, (down town Denver) and dumps you off at the base of Winter Park.  Think about this, enjoying a nice relaxing ride on Sunday morning reading the paper (or in my case, clipping coupons, hey every dollar counts) sipping your hot coffee and enjoying the scenery.  After a 1 hour 45 minute train ride you're energized and relaxed to hit the slopes for the best skiing ever, why is it the best skiing of all time?  Well you don't have to drive home on Sunday evening on I-70 while the thousands of people are crowding the 2 lane highway, and just pray there is not a blizzard.  This means you can ski hard, because when 3:30 rolls around and you hear the train whistle, you know you have ti...

As reported in the Denver Post - Two main thoroughfares bordering the Pepsi Center will close during the Democratic National Convention — a move that will affect thousands of commuters and dozens of businesses. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper downplayed any expected disruptions from closing parts of Speer Boulevard and Auraria Parkway and light-rail access to the Pepsi Center and Union Station. Speer will be open during the morning commute. "We basically kept the entire downtown open," Hickenlooper said. "If you compare this map to what they did in Boston in 2004, we're closing about one-third as many streets." http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_9902779   www.judesandvall.com

When thinking of building a home people usually just think of bricks, mortar, and two by fours with no consideration for the sustainability of those materials. But new age homes, that have environmentally conscious builders running the show, are built with sustainable materials. Some of these materials include; bamboo flooring, plantation grown hardwoods, low volatile compound finishes, and stone that is synthetically made and also recyclable. Sustainable materials are becoming more and more popular due to the fact that the public has become more environmentally conscious. Major brands have started to come up with many new innovations in sustainable materials. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams are on the fore front of low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints which are much better fo...

North Hilltop boasts roomy lots, nearly double the size of those found in other urban neighborhoods such as Washington Park, and well-maintained vintage homes, many of them English Tudors. But, while Washington Park has enjoyed an extended period of prosperity, North Hilltop represents an overlooked gem on the verge of a boom of it’s own. “It’s quieter than other neighborhoods and parking issues are non-existent.” says one resident. “The neighbors are friendly and their beautiful homes well maintained. There’s a nice mix of newcomers and long-time residents. I pop out the front door and go jogging on the Parkway (6th Avenue). We can drive downtown in five minutes.” The transformation of the University Hospital complex into an upscale mix of townhomes, condos, specialty retail, and sidew...

Where is the Denver real estate market headed? We’re asked this on a daily basis, and with the frenetic pace of the news reports, it’s sometimes a moving target. What I can tell you is that in my office, we’re processing more under contract files in the $300,000 to $800,000 range these days. Last year, it seemed like the high end properties were sustaining us. This year, the mid-range properties are selling best. Perhaps the jumbo loan rates has slowed down the high end market a bit, perhaps some people are electing to stay in their homes and remodel them. That’s not to say high end isn’t selling at all, just that the more mid-range homes are the properties that are getting multiple offers and are moving more quickly. In-town residences are still selling more strongly than suburban ho...
