Upland is the home to the largest privately owned airport in the US.Cable Airport was founded in 1945 by the Cable family, who bought the land for $8,500. The first runway, 1-19, built by Dewey Cable himself, was 1,500 feet long. It ran north-south, perpendicular to the prevailing winds, and had a steep gradient. The main runway, 6-24, was completed six months later. Unlike the first runway, it ran east-west (parallel to the wind, which is ideal), had a hard, flat surface, and by 1947 was 2,350 feet long and 150 feet wide.Cable Airport is still owned by the Cable family. For over 55 years a 30 foot star has lit bright from Thanksgiving through Christmas from its perch in the hills above the end of Euclid Avenue in Upland. I have been a resident of Upland for just over five years and my family and I have grown very fond of the star just as I know everyone that sees it must have.The last few years brought many challenges to the star, in October 2003, wild fires almost knocked it out but the owner, Ken Petschow, with the help of friends and supporters were able to get the star back in working order.  Ken did not have as much luck with his home which was completely destroyed in the wild fires, it has yet to be rebuilt.  In 2006 vandals were successful in knocking the star out for the holiday season, due to the recent price increases of copper vandals have b... 12/02/2007

"It's really a small percentage of homes that are for sale now," I retorted, and we went for a drive. You know what happened. On some streets in every city, there were a number of houses for sale. But on those same streets, a larger number of homes were NOT for sale.
