2011 Lake of The Sky Garden Tour This year Lake of The Sky Garden Tour will return to Truckee on Saturday July 30th from 10am-4pm. If you are an avid gardener or love looking at beautiful gardens, this is a not-to-miss event.  My front garden with the irises already finished blooming At the high altitude of Lake Tahoe & Truckee, there are many challenges to gardening.  A few that readily come to mind is our short planting season. This year we received a snow storm in early June and sometimes we start getting snow in October so to cultivate a garden with gorgeous flowers and beautiful gardens is no mean feat. Also we have a lot of wildlife such as deers, chipmunks, squirrels who delight in tasting the first tender buds or tasty flowers...and that is enough for me to contemplate giving up...

3 Compelling Reasons for Running Barefoot By now probably most if not all of you have heard of the song “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga. But how many of you have heard of or read the book “Born To Run”? In this book, the author, Christopher McDougall told the story of how his love of running led him to the reclusive Tarahumara tribe of Mexico who can run hundreds of miles in skimpy sandals made out of rubber tire. Inspired by this story, I decided to train running barefoot for my upcoming Rock'n'Roll half marathon. Why did I elect to run barefoot? There are numerous reasons but for me the three main benefits are: Fun, Fit and Injury Free. In the past, I rarely associate Fun with running. It was the hard work I had to endure to keep up with my fitness regime or to get rid of the 500 calorie...

Gotta love Lake Tahoe...  I was headed down to Tahoe City which is on the North shore of Lake Tahoe.  The road follows the Truckee River up to the lake where the dam is located.  Well, not really a dam, but a out-take of the lake that coan control the amount of water leaving the lake at any particular time. So I saw a cut out on the side of the road and pulled over.  My son Ryan and I trekked through the brush and found the most perfect place to throw rocks! The water was sooooo cold obviously...  As the lake is snow runoff, and there is still snow on the ground in the shadows...  The river is a major rafting river for those that just want a lazy ride...   It seemed that our super-secret place was not so secret as we walked up the river and ran into some newlyweds from Minnasoooooota.  ...

Morel Mushroom hunting in Truckee As you all know from my previous posts, we had a big winter in Lake Tahoe Truckee this year. The snow kept coming and coming and coming...all the way to the beginning of June. However my husband still went out hiking in the trails behind our house whenever he could. A couple of weeks ago, he excitedly called me from his walk to let me know that he had found some Morel mushrooms and wanted me to join him in looking for some more. I was very skeptical about hunting for mushrooms in the wild, especially with reports of people getting sick from eating the wild mushrooms. Before setting out to do mushroom hunting, I went online and did some research on Morel mushrooms. I found a great site called The Great Morel with a wealth of information. You have to be c...

Spring or Winter Weather for Lake Tahoe? Looking outside in the past several days, I thought that we are still in the middle of January. I woke up with snow on the trees and my car. Then I was greeted with a rain/snow mix on the way to work. According to the National Weather report, Lake Tahoe and Truckee area will continue to receive snow showers above 7000 ft with possible accumulations of up to 2 inches.         Picture of my yard in June           I did not have a chance to work in my garden yet. Usually by now the crab apple tree is in full bloom and our irises and peonies are full of buds ready to bloom. I am really sad that Spring totally bypasses us this year since it is my favorite season. On the flip side, if you are a die hard skier/snowboarder, you can take advantage of Squa...

Amgen tour cancelled at Lake Tahoe Truckee I have been so excited waiting for Stage 1 & Stage 2 of Amgen Tour to go through Lake Tahoe Truckee. This is one of the largest bike race in America and Tahoe Truckee had planned all kinds of events to welcome the racers such as “King of the Mousehole” sponsored by Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Town of Truckee. Our Truckee Outrigger Canoe club also arranged to paddle along the shore on the morning of Monday May 16, next to the world best riders. However nature did not want to cooperate and winter storms arrive on Sunday May 15 with a vengeance. Between the snow and wind, race officials decided that conditions were just too dangerous and cancelled both Stage 1 & 2 in Tahoe Truckee. Monday Stage 2 of Amgen Tour was moved ...

Amgen Bike Tour comes through Truckee, CA tomorrow, MAYBE!  Stage 1 from South Shore Lake Tahoe to Northstar in Truckee, CA was cancelled!  They postponed the start to 1:15 pm and then cancelled right at that time.  I didn't hear of the cancellation so at 1:15 drove to Tahoe City, intending to see the cyclists come through town and take the shorter route to Northstar.   But the weather was not cooperating, once again.  It was snowing hard all the way over to Tahoe City and we were seeing traffic driving against us going back to Truckee which didn't make sense.  Until we got to Tahoe City, got out of the car, got on the sidewalk and asked someone....cancelled at the start.  Good idea to be safety conscious but so disappointing for so many people who have been looking forward to this even...

AVEC Wine And Food in Truckee CA I just heard about AVEC Wine and Food a couple of weeks ago from one of my friend. We made a date for lunch but then I had to cancel since I had my Toastmaster meeting that day. However being the foodie I am, I keep thinking about the dining place & hope to have an opportunity soon to go and sample their fares. Well...the law of attraction certainly works here since a few days later a realtor friend from out of town called me & wanted to go for lunch on her visit. Of course I jumped at the chance & suggested Avec Wine & Food. Being French she whoheartedly agreed. In French  "Avec" means "With" so the translation is "With Wine and Food". Walking in the restaurant, we were greeted with a wall full of wine bottles. The atmoshere is relaxed with a long table...

ActiveRainPhotobloggerContest ~ Finally Spring in Truckee ???   The winter that never ends, that is the term that the locals who live in the Tahoe Truckee coined for the winter of 2010. We had a big snow storm before Thanksgiving 2010 and the snow kept piling on through March 2011. Record breaking snowfall, snowiest month of March on record...all contribute to several feet of snow still blanketing my garden during the month of April. According to tahoeweatherdiscussion.com, this winter is at number 7 in the past 100 years and number 12 since 1879 when record keeping began. Finally a few days ago, I woke up to the what seemed to be the first blue sky day in a long time, and miracle of all miracle, the snow had completely disappeared from the garden next to my front door. Green daffodils ...

Wild Cherries Coffee House in Truckee CA I feel very lucky that my office is right across from Wild Cherries Coffee House. This place is a local favorite and also a popular lunch place for the Truckee High School crowds. Judging from Wild Cherries rave reviews from Yelp, it is also favored by tourists and out of towners.   The first thing you notice when you walk in Wild Cherries Coffee House is the vibrant scene that greets you. Eclectic artworks on the wall and you can also see a poster of Kristin Krone, the Olympic downhill skier who also happens to be the owner of Wild Cherries Coffee House. On the left wall, there are displays of colorful coffee mugs, T shirts, hats for sale and there are also 2 bookshelves for local businesses to display their brochures and business cards.        ...
