So what's the craziest thing that's every happened to you as a homeowner? I'm talking about things that can go wrong ~ and they do go wrong (right?) ~ and they go wrong at the worst possible time (right again?) ~ and when you don't have any money to fix it (right, right, right). Oh, the joys of home ownership. We had this broken pipe, you see (due to a freeze). We tried to save some money by having a "friend" fix it. (First mistake?) He turned off the water. Then came in to turn on the bathtub faucet just to make sure the water was off. (It was.) He fixed the pipe. (That was good.) He went and turned on the water again. (The pipe was holding.) Except he forgot one teensy, weensy, itsy, bitsy, tiny, whiny, minor little thing. The bathtub water faucet was still on. That wouldn't have bee...

One of the most incredible videos of the 2011 Phoenix, Arizona dust storm is below. Watching it I couldn't help but think of the following quick list that I'm convinced speaks to the challenges of the real estate market of our day (don't forget to watch the video as it relates to the list)... 6 Things Getting Caught in a Dust Storm and the Challenging Real Estate Market Have in Common: 1. Some saw it coming. 2. Some didn't see it coming. 3. Some were prepared for it. 4. Some weren't prepared for it. 5. When it hit, it got a lot darker than some of us thought. 6. It eventually passes and things get back to normal. (If you can't see this video, click here.)

What's the craziest injury you've ever had? A broken arm? (ouch) A tooth knocked out of your mouth? (ouch ouch) Stepping on glass in your bare feet? (ouch ouch OUCH) The craziest injury I've ever had? Well, there are a number I could choose from. Like the time when I got a nail stuck in my head. (I was in a friend's "fort" and stood up into it. I don't look so good in red.) Or the time when I dislocated my shoulder in a football game. (I was running back an interception in all my glory and they piled on me out-of-bounds.) Or the time when I fell off my bike into broken glass with my hands. (I was carrying a bag of bottles to get the money back at the store. Remember those days?) But probably the one injury I remember the most over each of these (and so does my mom!) came in 1st grade C...

Do you think for yourself? Oh really. You do? I'd like to suggest that many of us don't (who think we do). Many of us don't think for ourselves. We've adopted "group think." (Another way of saying it is "herd mentality.") What I mean is we've really just embraced (like a lover) the thoughts of others (for the most part). Somebody tells us in school. Or our friends say it on the playground. Or when we're older, we hear it in the office or on the news or see it in a movie or read it online ~ and voila! ~ that's how we think, too. We just parrot the ideas of others. ("Polly, want a cracker?") But we never really think for ourselves. Not really. (Even the so-called smartest among us.) So how do YOU deal with bad news? I guess the way you answer that question really depends on what the bad news is. Right? I mean, if the bad news is your favorite baseball team lost in the playoffs, then you'll deal with that in a certain way. (It's not such a big deal unless you're a fanatic.) If the bad news is your brother and sister-in-law are losing their house to foreclosure, then you'll deal with that in a certain way. (That's a much bigger deal than a sports game.) If the bad news is about Y-O-U and you've got cancer (God forbid), you'll definitely deal with that in a certain way. (It's probably the biggest deal when it's happening to Y-O-U. Right?) So how do YOU deal with bad news? I submit that each of us deals with bad news in probably one or more of the following ways (nega...

With Father's Day coming up later this week, I wanted to pop out another quick post just to celebrate fathers in general in relation to their kids. I did something similar the last 2 years. (For "10 Things Kids Say to Their Dads," click here; For "12 Questions Kids Ask Their Dads," click here.) This time around it's 8 things dads wish their kids really knew (off the top of my head and from my own experience and thinking). If you're a dad, do you agree with this list? If you're a son or daughter, do you think your dad thinks like this? If he doesn't, forgive him for it and still love him this Father's day... 8 Things Dads Wish Their Kids Really Knew: (what might you add to the list?) 1. They mean everything to us 2. If they're good, they "own" us 3. If they're bad, they still "own" us (...

Lightning fast post meant to make you think... 10 Mistakes People Make with Twitter: (what might you add to the list?) 1. Think it's supposed to make them money. 2. Demand that it makes them money. 3. Measure it's worth on whether it makes them money. 4. Forget there are social media "seasons." (spring, summer, fall, winter) 5. Think it's a game the one with the most followers wins. 6. Forget it's about people versus product-pushing. 7. Police (poo poo) other people's approaches. 8. Aren't themselves. 9. Forget it's supposed to be fun, too. 10. Give up too soon. (To read the BONUS MISTAKE, click here. Totally worth your while. I promise.)
