The St. Helena March 2014 home sales report reflects stable market conditions for residential real estate in this northern Napa Valley community.  The median sale price of the 11 homes that closed escrow in March was $1,025,000.  The average time required to accept an offer was 125 days, which indicates generally soft demand even though prices are not dropping significantly. There are 66 homes listed for sale today.  Many of the 15 homes that came on the market in the past month are in small housing tracts still under construction.  There are 20 homes that have been on the market over six months. In recent news, Cindy Pawlcyn is closing her short lived restaurant, Cindy Pawlcyn's Wood Grill and Wine Bar, just south of downtown St Helena. Opened about a decade ago as Go Fish, then morphing into Brassica, the place though popular has never seemed to quite take off. The Bay Area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) released a new report card on the condition of local streets and roads. In this report, it gave the city of St. Helena one of the worst grades. The reason why, the lack of funds to improve things. In need of a cool Hawaiian shirt, some fashionable woman's cloths, then Goodman's is the place to go. Even though it states 1892 on the building itself, from a Napa Valley Register article, it states this historic building was built in 1890 by Abraham Goodman. The family remains in business here in St Helena continuously doing so since 1879. The building has had only three owners with the current owners, Jack and Kathy Paulus acquiring it 37 years ago. Their plans are to retire but hope someone will purchase and keep the locally called "department store" going. The new Cairdean Estate Winery and restaurant, The Farmer and the Fox, took over the site known to the locals as the Cement Works about two miles north of St Helena. This was an upscale factory stores outlet formally named  the St. Helena Marketplace with many well known merchants such as London Fog, Brooks Brothers and Coach. The  ambitious undertaking took about two years to transform the old shopping center into what appears to be a world class winery estate.
