A Brooks Brothers store in La Jolla?  I always thought you would have to go to New York or Rodeo Drive to shop in a Brooks Brothers!  When Saks Fifth Avenue closed a couple of years ago on Wall Street in the village of La Jolla, La Jolla residents were dismayed that after many years in the Village, we would lose our only high end large clothing store.  Tomorrow, November 20th, that is all about to change, when Brooks Brothers has its Grand Opening.  The 14,000 square foot store is taking over the Saks Fifth Avenue building and is expected to sell both men's and women's Brooks Brothers' collections.  The Grand Opening is open to the public from 6 pm to 8 pm and anyone attending will be able to save 15% on their purchases.  In addition, in the spirit of the season... 10% of the evening's ...

Imagine missing one leg, or both. Or an arm, or both. How about both arms and legs? What if you were confined to a wheelchair, partially paralyzed? Can you imagine what life might be like? There are lots of folks who DO know what it's like. And they don't let it stop them from enjoying life and being active. Some are incredible athletes. I saw some of them today in La Jolla. La Jolla was the site of the Tour de Cove and the San Diego Triathlon Challenge to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).  And many of the folks I saw participating in the events or just hanging out have been the recipients of prosthetic arms and legs and wheelchairs to enable them to live more active lives and participate in fitness and athletic competition. I saw a 10-year kid with both legs amputated a...

This Sunday in La Jolla California is a very special day. It's the Tour de Cove. The Tour de Cove is a significant fund raising event for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). Monies raised benefits CAH who helps folks with physical challenge pursue active ifestyle through physical fitness and atheltics. The funds are used to purchase prosthetics (which can cost $15,000), wheelchairs and handcycles (about $2000) for these athletes, many of whom compete locally, nationally and internationally in a host of events. [graphic is a link to the website] The Tour de Cove is held every year at La Jolla Cove, although last year's event had to be canceled becuase of teh fires and concerns about the athletes who were participating in the spin-a-thon as well as the triatholon. There is a 4 and 1...

Having spent a large portion of my life living in Mexico, first as an exchange student, then owning gift and clothing stores in La Jolla and Puerto Vallarta and most recently selling oceanfront properties in Marina & Puerto Vallarta, I love Mexican food.  Not just the kind you get in your local Taco Bell or even some of the chain restaurants... the kind you get from the small neighborhood local hangouts.  Mr. Taco in La Jolla, on Ivanhoe, is what I consider to be an authentic neighborhood taco shop.  Not only do they serve great tacos, delicious chile rellenos, sizziling fajitas, tasty frijoles and warm handmade tortillas, but they also serve ice cold beer and margaritas!  And if you are a Chargers fan (or even not) you must try the "Chargers Burrito Supreme", packed with over 1 pound o...

Looking for where the locals go in La Jolla for a great cup of coffee and to catch up on the comings and goings in La Jolla?  Come visit one of my favorite places, The Pannikin.  The Pannikin is on the upper end of Girard away from the trendy boutiques.  But make no mistake, the Pannikin is THE hangout for La Jollans who want to see and be seen.  There are wooden floors and an eclectic mixture of furnishings, cushy chairs, and even old wooden style theater chairs, probably taken from the old La Jolla "Cove" theater before it closed down years ago.  There are cozy tables outside to enjoy our year round climate and did I mention great coffee?  Come see for yourself! If you have never been to a show at the La Jolla Playhouse, I encourage you to do so.  Tobacco Road, the longest running Broadway show ever (December 1933 - May 1941) is playing at the La Jolla Playhouse from now through October 26th.  "Tobacco Road is no-holds-barred theater that fascinated 1930s audiences in part because it commented on their precarious depression era lifestyle in a provocative and surprising way," explained David Schweizer, Tobacco Road's Director. "Once again, now, it has intense contemporary relevance, in fact, it couldn't be more timely given our current economic crises. Yet, there is also something about the play's portrait of survival and human resourcefulness -scrappy, cunning human resourcefulness in the face of unbearable odds- that I find inspiring." PERFORM...
