A Trip to Idyllwild, CA  We've been to the artsy mountain town of Idyllwild CA a couple of time (most recently last year) to enjoy some hiking, beautiful mountain views, and their popular down town area with abundant shopping (OK some of it kinda touristy), art galleries, antique shops, and a variety of popular places to eat, some with live music in the evenings (the jazz at the Italian place our first night was first rate!). Sometimes it's fun to get away from our beautiful coast and see some other gorgeous areas of Southern California! I spied this interesting combination when strolling the streets on our first day. Excellence Up Close and Personal You might be thinking this is about the Olympics. But it's not. We just spent a long weekend in Idyllwild, a mountain town about 2 hours from Carlsbad filled with art, music, good restaurants, and an alpine feel, at over 5000 feet above sea level and a haven for hikers and those who love the outdoors! We had two terrific dinners, but our best experience, Saturday night, was at Fratello's in the downtown area.  It was a beautiful warm evening, with a lively crowd, and a terrific jazz band ("Umlimited") on the outdoor patio. We were treated to wonderful music and, now and then, the opportunity to witness their very talented saxophone player up close and personal - he liked to wander and entertain the tables close by, and we had the benefit of watching some... 08/14/2016

Idyllwild California Idyllwild is a small town in the San Jacinto mountains perhaps 2 hours from Carlsbad. It's rather small with lots of locally owned businesses, restaurants and galleries, as well as being a haven for hikers and rock climbers of all levels, from newbies to highly experienced, because of the mountains and numerous trails.  We spent a weekend there 9 years ago to explore this artsy town, do a little hiking, and simply relax. Suicide Rock (below) is a popular hike for those with moderate experience and stamina. Needless to say, we just enjoyed the views and the thought of climbing, rather than the reality!  07/21/2016

I spent part of the weekend in Idyllwild, an arts town in the Santa Rosa Mountains, about 90 miles inland. The town is also known for offering some of the best hiking around (next time, perhaps).   These photos are of Suicide Rock, as seen from Humber Park, the start of one of the more difficult trails in the area. While we didn't see any, this peak is a popular rock climbing challenge. I posted an article about Idyllwild on my Fans of Coastal San Diego blog if you are interested in reading more about this cool town. Idyllwild is less than 3 hours from Carlsbad, so while you could do a day trip, it is worth staying overnight to enjoy all there is to do there.
