If you happen to be in the Culver City area (south and west of LA) and are looking for a great breadkfast place (and now lunch and dinner on some days), Café Laurent may suit your taste buds.    This little French bistro at the corner of Barman and Overland (4243 Overland, just south of Culver Blvd.) is a delight. With the classic French posters of the black cat ("Chat Noir") and of French waiters, colorful table linens, a staff that is friendly and efficient (you will hear some French spoken here, along with French music), and a tasteful breakfast and brunch menu (omelettes, quiche, salads), this place is a great eatery for a Saturday or Sunday meal before heading out to enjoy the city.      Café Laurent is small, even with the additional outdoor dining patio and it gets crowded on wee...

Ok, I admit it. When I wrote that follow up blog last night I was TIRED...really tired after a long day of work and a long week preparing for the seminar. Then my husband surprised me by coming home early (if you can call 9:30pm early!) and I was anxious to wrap up my blog and spend some time with him. So unfortunately I left out some pretty important details about the Senior Staging Seminar I gave yesterday at the Culver City Senior Center. I hope you don't think I'm beating a dead horse here, but since so many Stagers seem interested in holding similar seminars in their areas, I thought you might be interested in how I structured my talk. I originally got the idea for the seminar from another senior seminar I did with Michelle Minch and Karen Thornton last fall. We spoke to close to 1...

If you saw my blog earlier this week, you'll know that today I gave a free seminar for seniors at the Culver City Senior Center. The seminar focused on Preparing Your Home for Sale in a Soft Real Estate Market and was geared toward seniors who may be ready to move into a retirement community or assisted living but may be worried about selling their homes in a buyers' market. Well it was a great success! There were 10 seniors who attended, and they all gave me wonderful feedback and said they learned a lot from the presentation. One in particular was ready to sell in the near future and had several specific questions. At the end of the presentation, I had one of my Realtor partners give a 5-minute introduction to our next seminar (scheduled for Saturday April 4th at the Keller Williams o...

When you say "Culver City" what comes to mind? Some people connect it with the home of Sony Pictures, the Studio. Culver City calls itself "The heart of Screenland" with good reason.  How did this happen? Well, we can thank this to the Ballona Creek, Thomas Ince and Harry Culver. Harry Culver saw Thomas Ince shooting one of his famous western movies "on location" on Ballona Creek. Culver convinced Ince to move his Studio to Culver City. The rest  is history. Culver Studios calls Culver City home. This Studio is known for one of the most famous epic movies that were filmed here. "Gone With The Wind" was filmed in 1939 and in those days the Studio took up a lot more space then today.  In the late 1920's you could see Joseph Kennedy and Gloria Swanson walking on the Lot. (He was one of the...

How did the Turkey get it's name? It may have come from the noise a wild turkey makes when it become frightened: it sounds like 'turk - turk - turk.' The original inhabitants of America called the bird a 'firkee.' Christopher Columbus, the explorer, took some of the wild turkeys of North America back to Europe. People enjoyed eating the meat. It is possible that traders along the Mediterranean casts , known as Turkes, may have brought some of these birds hence they came to be called 'turkey birds.' Some say Columbus thought the turkey was part of the peacock family. So he decided to call them 'tuka' which is the word for peacock in Tamil, a language spoken in southern India and Sri Lanka.

For those of you who do not know California, our climate is similar to the Mediterranean areas. Our population continues to grow and expand into the outlying foothill areas that are covered with scrub and grass most of the year. Unfortunately, when we have very dry years, these plants dry out and become a fire hazard to the homes and developments in those areas. We also have a weather condition called the Santa Ana's during October-January. They are a warm wind condition, that under normal circumstances, causes no damage..but when there is a fire..these unpredictable winds can take the embers from one location and place them miles uphill. This is exactly what has happened the last few days. So far, this particular Widlfire has destroyed over 2,000 acres of land. We in California struggl...
