Celebrate Small Business Saturday in Carlsbad VillageNovember 30, 2019 I know I say this every year, but it’s true - it’s hard to believe the holiday shopping season is upon us!  Black Friday is coming on November 29, just 3 weeks from today, to be immediately followed by the annual Small Business Saturday in downtown Carlsbad Village.  Small Business Saturday is a national tradition, now in its 11th year, I believe, for raising awareness of small businesses and encouraging local support at our busiest shopping time of the year.  No doubt this is something many area residents, and visitors, do every year, and throughout the year. Don’t forget to mark your calendar to #ShopSmall in Carlsbad Village on Saturday November 30th.  You might even be surprised at the variety our Village has to ...

Wordless Wednesday: Googly Eyes  We were out taking a morning walk today with our youngest granddaughter, who is almost 2. Given that it's Halloween there are all sorts of decorations in the neighborhood, and she spied these Googly Eyes hiding in the plants just up the street. I need to stop by this evening to see if they light up...they should!! 10/30/2019 UPDATE: I stopped by the neighbors and the Googly Eyes DO light up. Photo and video sent to the granddaughter so she can enjoy.

Q3 2019 Market Report for the Carlsbad 92008 AreaSingle Family Detached Homes The third quarter of 2019 for home sales in the Carlsbad 92008 area was busy, with some market shifts as compared to the same period in 2018. In this market report we specifically look at the sales activity for single family detached homes reported in the MLS. The 92008 area of Carlsbad covers a diverse region, including Carlsbad Village, Telescope Point, Olde Carlsbad and The Barrio (the latter 2 are Carlsbad’s first neighborhoods), expensive beach-front areas in the Village and south along Carlsbad Boulevard to the oceanfront community of Terramar, the lagoon-front Bay Cove neighborhood, several condo communities and residential neighborhoods close to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, and more, with a broad mix of a...

October 2019 Carlsbad Art Wall Mural The Carlsbad Art Wall (CAW) was founded by Carlsbad artist, Bryan Snyder, in 2015, in cooperation with the owner of the popular Mexican restaurant, Senor Grubby’s in Carlsbad Village. The wall provides an opportunity for the residents and visitors to enjoy beautiful and temporary public art creations by local, regional (often Los Angeles) and international muralists.  The newest Carlsbad Art Wall (CAW) was painted this past weekend, October 19 and 20, by Chimp, a New Zealand artist who is in the US as part of the Street Artist in Residence program in San Clemente CA (check out his Instagram site). I believe this mural was all spray painted, which is pretty impressive! If you live in the area or have visited Carlsbad, it’s likely you have driven by th...

Summer Returns to Carlsbad October 20, 2019 You might think the title a bit odd, but it's true...at least in terms of summer weather being back in Carlsbad.  It was 84 both yesterday and again today, and significantly hotter inland, and absolutely gorgeous days to be at the beach. Indeed, many were yesterday when I was out taking some photos and running errands, and as in the summer months the parking was pretty limited. Despite that there were plenty of areas on the beach without a soul in sight!  Those of you who have already experienced cold weather, frost, or even snow might think "what's the big deal...how fortunate you are?!" to have such warm weather in mid-October. But in Southern California temps like this in October mean the hot, dry Santa Ana winds are blowing in a westerly d...

The Windmill Food Hall is Open in Carlsbad 2019 Carlsbad’s iconic windmill is turning again, after what seemed like well over a year of standing still.  The windmill, built in 1982, is the site of what was once Pea Soup Andersen’s (that closed and later became TGI Friday’s) and now signals something else…the Windmill Food Hall, the first food hall in North San Diego County.   The windmill and adjacent buildings (the hotel) were also repainted a dark gray…or is it black…with white trim, and a big change from the blue but rather appealing. Plans for the Windmill Food Hall have been in the works for some time, and there were a number of delays with construction, but the facility finally opened over Labor Day weekend, although there is still some exterior work going on at one end of the fac...

Hoot Hoot - Not 1 but 2 Owls on the Roof  We had a wonderful owl experience tonight at our house in Carlsbad, although the photo is not great. We have been hearing the Great Horned Owls daily for weeks, but don't see them. This evening, as it was getting dark, I heard an owl that sounded really close. I went out to the back patio and saw it up on the chimney - clear as day. He, or she, was calling to another one nearby, who was hooting back. Luckily, I was able to sneak back in and grab my phone. More amazingly, whenI got back outside the second owl showed up and we were treated to a fun conversation between the 2, for about a minute, before they flew off. The video quality is not the best, but nature sure is wonderful, isn't it!

45th Annual Carlsbad Village Faire 2019 November 3rd in Carlsbad Fall is a popular time for outdoor events in Carlsbad. We’ve already had the popular Oktoberfest Fall Festival and the Super Hero Obstacle Race this past weekend, with the Pumpkin Plunge at the Alga Norte Aquatics Center coming up on the 19th. Carlsbad’s Halloween in the Village takes place on the 26th.  Next on the Fall event agenda is one of arts and crafts lovers’ favorite fairs, the Carlsbad Village Faire, on Sunday November 3rd. The 45th Annual Carlsbad Village Faire (it happens twice each year, also in May) is supposedly the largest 1-day outdoor fair in the US, and if you have ever been you know why they say this. You can expect a huge crowd so get there early. The Carlsbad Village Faire basically takes over downtow...

Wordless Wednesday: Carlsbad Art and Antique Mall is No More  The sad news for many in Carlsbad is that this iconic collection of vendor booths for art, antiques, collectibles, and so much more - here for several decades - along with the Mas Fina Cantina, a yoga studio and a jewelry store, will be closing to make room for State Street Commons, a 21,000 SF upscale retail and restaurant center. I believe the mall itself is now closed (BTW these photos were taken in 2008).  As one can well imagine there is a bit of controversy over this new project that will significantly change the facade and interior of this mall, adding new faces to the growing hip and artsy North State area that seems to be constantly changing. Stay tuned for more developments and updates as I get them.

Carlsbad Celebrates 2019 Halloween in the Village The 2nd Annual Halloween in the Village takes place in Carlsbad on Saturday October 26th from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, with fun for all including a Doggie Costume Contest at 4:00.   The Carlsbad Village Association does a wonderful job of promoting businesses and Village events, and Halloween in the Village is one of many. Good Morning Last Day of Summer 2019 Looking out from our back patio It's hard to believe summer is over today and that the first day of Fall is tomorrow! Where did it go? Tomorrow, September 23rd, is the Autumnal Equinox, when the day and night are of approximately equal duration. No doubt you have also noticed how much shorter the days have gotten (well, the daylight, that is).  The weather is still beautiful, but with cooler nights, and we are seeing changes in the flowers, and the tree leaves. And the orioles have migrated south.  Stores are celebrating Halloween, and have been for some time, as well as Christmas, still 3 months away. Home Depot Halloween Today is the 2nd day of ArtWalk Carlsbad 2019, on Armada Drive overlooking the Flower Fields and a panoramic view of the ocean. A...

Throwback Thursday: Bee Swarm in La Costa Carlsbad  I've seen a few swarms of bees over the years, back in New England and here in Southern California. Perhaps you have, too!.  But this was the most amazing. The bees collected into this huge cone in a pine tree at our first house here in Carlsbad, in La Costa, about 10 years ago. It probably lasted about an hour or so, and then within a few minutes they were all gone. So glad I saw it before it disappeared - from inside the house of course - and had my camera handy. Bees are certainly interesting creatures!
