Wordless WednesdayFuschia-Pink Flowers to Brighten the Day in Carlsbad  It's been a gorgeous day here in Carlsbad, perhaps the nicest we've had in a few weeks - high 60s by the beach, almost 80 inland. It was especially welcome after the chilly and rainy weather we had all last week until Sunday evening when the storm finally headed east. I was on my way to run an errand in Carlsbad Village - in the car only - and had to stop to snap this photo and enjoy the beauty for a minute. These flowers, a plot roughly 15' by 30', positively glowed in the bright sunlight.

A Rainy Friday in Carlsbad - Our Waterfall We've had a LOT of rain this week. While we have seen the sunshine here and there for a few hours, we've had rain and cloudy, gray weather every day since last Sunday. The rain was heaviest last night and went on for hours, causing some flooding in low-lying areas including the 78 freeway. Our local waterfall in the canyon in back of our house reminded me of the waterfalls in Kaua'i and Maui...well, sort of.

Signs of Our Times The Coronavirus - A Piece of History Signage along the Concrete Boardwalk in Carlsbad Village above the Beach No doubt we are seeing a bit of history right now in terms of the coronavirus pandemic, and the impact on each and every one of our lives, in more ways than we can fathom. Closed Except for Carryout at Cicciotti's Trattoria Italiana I took a short drive yesterday afternoon - I only got out of my car to photograph the empty beach (beaches are closed) - and the signs of our times were everywhere. I have never seen our charming seaside town this deserted, with so many closed retailers and restaurants. You can virtually park anywhere you want. On a side note many restaurants in Carlsbad are open for carryout and/or deliveries - there's an interactive map on the Ci...

Bringing Some Joy to Your Day from the Carlsbad Flower Fields The Carlsbad Flower Fields are a joy to behold every year, from March 1 through Mother's Day. This year is a bit different due to the coronavirus, with the venue closing on March 17th until further notice.  But we can still enjoy the fields by looking down from Armada Drive (with plenty of room to maintain appropriate social distancing but still take photos and videos!). My wife and I went out today to do just that, on a gorgeous day with beautiful ocean views in the distance. What a treat to enjoy 50 acres of ranunculas  - I hope you enjoy them as well. In these challenging times we have to remember to take care of our personal well-being, and enjoying nature is a wonderful way to do that.

Goodbye Carlsbad Village Art & Antique MallYou Will be Missed! It seems like just a few weeks ago that I learned about the future demise of the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall. In reality it was last fall when I first heard about this.  This quirky, fun-looking set of buildings has housed multiple vendors, and been a staple of the Village, for about 30 years. The Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall is being torn down, or perhaps more correctly - re-used and renovated - to be replaced by State Street Commons, an upscale multi-purpose facility reportedly with 21,000 SF of restaurant and retail space, at 2742-52 State Street in the heart of the hip and artsy North State Area.  I had to meet with a tenant at my new listing hitting the market in this area on Tuesday, and drove down S...

Wordless Wednesday: The Roadrunner Came for Breakfast  I just happened to be looking out the back upstairs window yesterday morning and spied the Roadrunner in our backyard. He (or she) had come for breakfast and had snared one of the lizards we often see in our yard.  If you've not seen one, they are quite large - about 2 feet from beak to tip of tail - and run quite fast.  S/he wandered around the yard with the lizard dangling for about 10 minutes, then finally jumped onto the fence and left. Hope it enjoyed breakfast wherever it decided to dine!

3-Bedroom Homes for Sale in CarlsbadFebruary 2020 Update - Detached Single Family Homes Carlsbad home buyers are often interested in buying a 3-bedroom detached single family home when it’s time to buy a new home, or the first one.   Some Carlsbad buyers are first time home buyers, while others are down-sizing from a larger house. A 3-bedroom might specifically meet desired lifestyle and budgetary needs. And other buyers are looking for a Carlsbad beach home, near or on the ocean, and are willing to settle for a 3-bedroom home to be on or close to the beach, given the limited options. Read about the 10 essential things to consider when buying a second home The inventory of single family detached homes has increased only modestly in Carlsbad since the end of December, and inventory for t...

February 2020 Carlsbad Art Wall Mural The first Carlsbad Art Wall (CAW) of 2020 was painted this past weekend, February 15 and 16, by Skechy_Art. Why not check out his Instagram site.  If you live in the area or have visited Carlsbad, it’s likely you have driven by the wall when heading toward the beach. Even if you don’t know the official #CarlsbadArtWall name you no doubt have noticed the changing murals on the east-facing wall of Senor Grubby’s on Carlsbad Village Drive, west of the train tracks and easily seen when heading to Carlsbad Boulevard. Carlsbad artist, Bryan Snyder, founded the Carlsbad Art Wall (CAW) in 2015, in cooperation with the owner of the popular Mexican restaurant, Senor Grubby’s, in Carlsbad Village. The wall is an opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy ...

4-Bedroom Homes for Sale in Carlsbad February 20, 2020 Market Update Carlsbad home buyers often need more space than a 3-bedroom single family detached home can offer. The reasons vary, of course – an expanding household or multigenerational living, for example. A family member may need a home office, or additional guest living space might be desired.   The supply of single family detached homes remains limited in Carlsbad compared to demand, and inventory has only increased slightly since the beginning of 2020; take a look at the most recent market report for Carlsbad at January 2020 Carlsbad Real Estate Market Report for updates on the Carlsbad housing market.  As of this report we only have 1.9 months of inventory of single family detached homes with 4-bedrooms, based on the rate of ...

Single Story Homes for Sale in Carlsbad CA February 19, 2020 Market Update A good number of Carlsbad home buyers are interested in buying single story detached homes when searching for a new place or their first one. The Carlsbad inventory has improved slightly since the beginning of this year but remains limited. Despite the low inventory, buyers have options if their preference is a detached single story home.  Some Carlsbad home buyers simply prefer a single floor plan layout, but in some cases there is a specific preference for no stairs, or a need due to medical reasons.  Single story detached homes, especially newly built homes, are generally harder to find in Carlsbad; some planned communities do not even build them because of added construction costs and other considerations.  C...

Wordless Wednesday: Sounds of Nature in Carlsbad Just a bit of explanation for what appears to be a blank video - we've had a visitor outside our back door several times recently. The main reason for recording this was to share with the grandkids who immediately figured out what it was.  I called the Agua Hedionda Nature Center who said it was likely a Pacific Tree frog. I've heard them over at my Mom's condo complex too, and during the day.

Happy Valentine's Day from Carlsbad  It's a big day for Valentine's wishes, flowers, Valentine cards, chocolates, perhaps a meal with a special person or family and friends, special events, and so much more, at least for those who wish to celebrate and do. It's certainly become quite the commercial holiday, a far cry from its history (interesting read here on Wikipedia, and one of many). I happened to be out walking along the beach on January 1st of 2018 and found these stone sculture creations - the creator had just finished. I wasn't close enough to tell if they were truly all balanced or somehow anchored, at leat the top stones. Either way, I thought it was appropriate for today!

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad RanchOpening Day is March 1, 2020 It’s that time of year again - the popular Flower Fields in Carlsbad CA will open to the public in 3 weeks on Sunday March 1st.   It’s hard to believe so many months have gone by since they closed and the fields turned brown. But in a few more weeks the fields will be gorgeous once again.  Be aware the Carlsbad Flower Fields take a while to reach their peak, so don’t expect the fields to look like this photo on Opening Day. But they truly are beautiful when at their peak bloom!  Check out my video from March 2015 below The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch have been a popular tourist attraction for more than 6 decades, with 50 acres of brightly colored Ranunculas. It’s interesting to see the transitions during the year, from ...
