Carlsbad Flower Fields Up Close I attended a CRS Networking Event with 25 other Southern California Realtors this past Thursday for a couple of hours at the Carlsbad Flower Fields.  It was fun to see my CRS friends as well as to meet other agents I didn’t know. There was time to talk with each other before taking a tour. After the group photo we split up into small groups to leisurely walk through the gardens, and of course take lots of photos.  While I have often driven by the Flower Fields on Armada Drive on the hill above to the east which offers great panoramic views of the flowers and the ocean, I haven’t seen the flowers and the venue itself up close for years.   It was a sunny day with a cool ocean breeze, although the marine layer moved in before the event was over so it was pre...

2024 Carlsbad Village Street Faire is May 5 One of our more popular arts and craft fairs returns to Carlsbad Village on Sunday May 5, 2024. The Carlsbad Village Street Faire is reportedly the largest outdoor 1-day fair in the US, other than its counter-part, the Carlsbad Village Faire in November. This is the 50th year for this fair! The Carlsbad Village Street Faire takes place from 8 am until 5 pm, so there is ample time to enjoy over 900 vendors and shop all you want. The Carlsbad Village Faire takes place in the heart of the Village, along Grand Avenue from Carlsbad Boulevard to Jefferson. Our Monarch Caterpillar Nursery The nursery is doing well and so are the 10 Monarch Caterpillars, doing what caterpillars do. The Monarch Butterfly visited our back patio several weeks ago and spent quite a bit of time landing on the milkweed plants repeatedly. We didn't see any eggs left behind but that may simply have been our vision as Monarch eggs are supposedly quite small. A couple weeks ago my wife saw a couple of very small caterpillars on one of the milkweed plants and now there are 10 (there were a couple others but they didn't make it for long). They have grown pretty substantially which we hope will help at least some of them survive and move into the next phase (chrysalis), and not become a tasty meal for one of the many birds in our yard. Carlsbad and Encinitas homes, along with those in towns like Del Mar and Solana Beach, are often described as being only steps to the beach. It’s a real estate marketing ploy. Sometimes STEPS to the beaches means that literally.So here are some steps at the beaches.          In some cases you may be getting more than you bargain for.         Just steps to the beach in many areas means real steps, and quite a lot of them in some cases. Encinitas has the most that I have seen, at beaches like Grandview, Stone Steps, Beacon’s and Swami’s.         The bluffs offer dramatic coastal views, but getting to the beach below means navigating the steps down, and then, of course, your own stair master on the way back up. Carlsbad weather is pretty ideal, as is the weather for San Diego in general. It’s one of the reasons so many folks like living here, and continue to move here despite the high prices. After all, it was 75 the other day…on January 13th! Folks joke about the sunshine tax (our prices) that we pay, and complain that some employers believe they can pay less than other large cities because the overall environment is so desirable and people will live here regardless. That may be a rumor or perhaps a sad explanation. Sunshine tax also applies to our gas prices. Home values are not the only thing eroding in Carlsbad and other communities of Southern California. Erosion can be a big problem in some parts of Carlsbad, Encinitas, and  Solana Beach, among other coastal communities. Some erosion does not impact housing, while in other is case it may…significantly. Coastal erosion is inevitable. The edge of the continent continues to erode as surely as the sun continues to shine. Despite efforts to curb it (which are expensive) over time, it just happens, albeit more slowly with some methods in place such as seawalls. As a Carlsbad homeowner and dedicated foodie, I make it a point to learn about restaurants in the area and, of course, test them out when I can. There are lots I haven’t been to yet, but here is a list of some thoughts on places to wine and dine, from casual to upscale. Interested in seaside dining in the Carlsbad area? We braced ourselves in San Diego for the torrential downpour and the high winds that have battered San Francisco, Sacramento and Santa Barbara. Instead, at least in the coastal areas, we were blessed with a fairly constant and gentle downpour. It will be enough to green our gardens and hillsides for awhile, but many of us were hoping for a greater accumulation of rain, but not enough to endanger the areas burned in last fall’s fires. Unfortunately for San Diego Chargers fans, the gentle rain is expected to continue this afternoon. Carlsbad is located about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego and offers an idyllic year-round beach lifestyle. South Carlsbad State Beach is, in my opinion, one of the nicest in North County San Diego. Carlsbad home buyers seeking to live within walking distance of the beach with possible ocean views may be interested in Poinsettia Cove.
