Webb that came to fruition in 1978. Work on El Mirage and Deer Valley Road has started (Click on the link to see the full report plus a map of the work to be done) Starting Monday, July 14, 2008, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) contractor will begin roadway construction of a new segment of El Mirage Road extending from Deer Valley Road to SR Loop 303. The project will construct a new six-lane (three travel lanes in each direction) roadway extension of El Mirage Road from Deer Valley Drive to Williams Road and widen the existing El Mirage Road between Williams Road and SR Loop 303. Construction is scheduled for completion in Spring 2009. The new road will border the east boundaries of Sun City West & Corte Bella, opening up a much needed passage from Bell Rd to the Loop 303. In case you missed the news like I did... according to the Maricopa County Department of Transportation it looks as though Sun City West will get the sound barrier wall they want. The proposed wall will cut back on noise from the adjoining Loop-303. The proposal was passed by a regional council of the Maricopa Association of Governments. If you haven't heard yet, the Sun City West Library book sale will be held on Saturday, July 26 from 8am to 2pm at the R.H. Johnson Social Hall, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd.  The proceeds provide additional revenue to sustain Library activities.     People from all over the valley attend this popular book sale.  Fiction, non-fiction, cook books, children's books, hard and paperbacks all on sale.  Don't forget to check out the puzzles, tapes, and videos.     The Sun City West Library is the most recognized building in Sun City West.  Located on the corner of Meeker and RH Johnson, it is the building with a clock tower.  Have you ever heard its beautiful chimes? Every month or two my company send out a mailer to the Arizona Sun Cities called the Ken Meade Report.  This month our president, Steve Meade did an article about the founder of the Sun Cities, Del Webb.Del Webb Corp. officials acknowledge they weren't the first to think of a retirement community, but  Del E. Webb IS the man that created the concept of the active retirement communities as we know them today.  Nobody else had done them on the scale he did when he came up with the concept of the original Sun City. In the Ken Meade Report, Steve had multiple choice questions to see how much you might know about Del Webb.  From this article I learned that he had been a co-owner of the New York Yankees, that he was 6'4" tall, and that he was 75 years old when he died on the 4th of July, 1974... 07/16/2008

A few months ago the Sun City West Recreation Center announced the closing of Trail Ridge Golf Course during the summer for renovations.  Due to an overwhelming response from Sun City West, Sun City Grand and Arizona Traditions resident golfers, the course will NOT close. Tough golf courses are a golfer's dream.  The challenges that Trail Ridge Golf Course presents make it an extremely popular golf course in the Arizona West Valley.  It has numerous lakes, mature trees of several different species, intruding desert areas into the fairways, and strategically structured hazards.
