Happy Birthday Arizona!Happy Valentine's Day!  Unless you follow Arizona history, you may not know that back in 1912, Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state on February 14th.  In this land of sunshine in the middle of winter, many people are celebrating by getting outside and enjoying the beautiful weather. I can tell you that the amount of people hiking right now in Sedona is more than I would have thought.  I was going down Soldiers Pass this morning and there were at least 50 people walking on the side of the street to get to the entrance of the Soldiers Pass Trail. Of course, others are playing golf or tennis. Sedona Winter Snow EventThis video shows the rise of the snow level from the start to the end - looking to the west (Coffeepot Rock) and the east.  It shows the incremental rise of the snow level and eventual evaporation of the snow. Notice also, "Xander" the hummingbird sticking through the storm to guard his juice source!Sedona as well as most of Arizona has been in an exceptional drought. Usually, by the beginning of December, all the leaves of our Japanese Maple have fallen. During this season, there are still leaves on that tree!  The tree may be dormant but the leaves are not brown, they are red, so the tree looks like it is not dormant. This snow fell on Christmas Eve 2016 into Christmas Day. We had a very wet and snowy winter season. Over 7.5 inches of snow and 7.22 inches of rain were recorded that December. Sedona-Weather.comWhat is the Sedona Weather Like in Late Fall?November – Early December 2020It is hard to believe that we are approaching the Winter of 2021!  It will be here fast.  Usually, in late November, our early mornings are filled with temperatures below 32º.  It is the time of the year that we have to make sure plants that are prone to frostbite including many species of cactus need to be wrapped up with a frost blanket or brought into our homes.  Outdoor watering systems should be turned off or set to come on later in the day when the temps are above freezing.  Generally, we don’t have to blow out our outdoor water pipes for “winterizing”.  Check with your landscaper on your location for your individual needs.
