Jerome- Arizona's Richest Ghost Town - Anyone who makes the trek to Sedona will probably want to visit Jerome, which was built on the side of Cleopatra Hill, to check out the old hippy town of the 1970s.  It is a very special art community with a colorful past and loads of history, including ghosts!  You can just look down any street and marvel at the buildings' design, especially those on stilts!  Every store is unique; many offer views of the Verde Valley below out of East facing windows. I can only wonder what this town was like in the heyday of the copper mining boom.  Currently, there are less than 600 residents living in Jerome. The Rich History of JeromeBefore the Spanish settlers appeared in the 1500s, the natives mined stones and copper for their jewelry. You can still run acro...

Located 20 miles east of Prescott, there are not too many places like Jerome.  Jerome (elevation 5,300 feet) is an old mining town that clings to the side of a steep 7,800 foot mountain.  The street, shops, and homes are built to handle the very steep slope.  The valley below is 2,000 feet down.   Go check it out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

This was a rare Sunday for my husband and I... neither one of us had to work.  So we escaped north to Jerome, AZ.  I had seen an episode of Arizona Highways on TV that talked about Jerome and its reputation as a ghost town.  After our visit I found a website called Jerome Times to find out about the town's history. We knew Jerome was at a higher elevation but we had no idea it was literally built into the side of a mountain.  We kept climbing and climbing.  Once in Jerome, we were struck by how quaint the town was as well as how scary it would be to live in some of the cliff-hanger buildings.  It was a beautiful drive and a fun day. The above picture is a view from one of the parking lots.  I think the next time we have visitors another trip to Jerome is in order. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

Arizona is one of the world's open books when it comes to geology.  An author friend of mine, Davis Young, retired to Arizona from his home in Pennsylvania specifically because the geology (his subject as a professor) is so diverse. My Darlin' and I spent a Christmas getaway weekend in Prescott, AZ.  On Christmas Eve morning, we drove through Jerome along this road (State Hwy 89A) on our way to preview the Verde Valley.  In the photo above, you're looking across the valley from the Jerome (west) side.  You can see why it's called Arizona's Other Grand Canyon. We had booked a Saturday afternoon trip through the Verde Valley on the Verde Canyon Railroad.  Put it on your bucket list! My view of the canyon, and thus my photos, are from the perspective of the train itself.  For a bird's eye...
