Nicolas Leblanc was born in Ivoy-le-Pré, France back in 1742.  His father died in 1751, he was sent to Bourges to live with Dr. Bien, a close family friend.  Dr. Bien died in 1759.  Shortly after his death Nicolas enrolled in the College of Surgeons in Paris to study medicine.  He graduated with a master’s degree in surgery.  After graduation he opened a medical practice.  In 1780, he accepted a position as the private physician to the household of Louis Philip II, Duke of Orleans.  In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a prize for a substance that could be produced from salt.  By 1791, he had succeeded, the prize was awarded to Nicolas.  In a plant he was able to produce 320 tons of the product.Now, I’m sure you want to know what he discovered, well he discovered how to manuf...

Thelma Adele Patten Law was born in Huntsville, Texas back in 1900 to Mason and Pauline.  She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1917 as valedictorian.  In 1923, she graduated from Howard University with a medical degree.  The following year she earned her medical license.  She set up her first practice in Houston at the Odd Fellows Temple in 1924.  In 1940, she became the president of the Lone Star Medical Association.  She died in 1968, she was 67.What you may not know about Thelma is that she was the first African American woman admitted to the Harris County Medical Society.Your day is worthwhile when you make someone smile, so give the free gift of a smile today.

John Bernard Lee was born in either County Cork or Brentford, London back in 1908 to Edmund and Nellie.  When he was six his father had him on the stage in a sketch called “The Double Event” at the Oxford Music Hall.  He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, while working as a fruit porter to pay his fees.After graduation he worked in the repertory theatre in Rusholme, Manchester before working on the West End stage.  His first screen debut was in The Double Event in 1934.  He served with the Royal Sussex Regiment during World War II.  After the war he appeared in several movies, there are just too many to mention.While most of you have not heard of John, maybe you’ll recognize him in his role of M in the first eleven James Bond films.Your day is worthwhile when you make someone s...

Dorothy McCullough was born in Oakland, California back in 1901 to Frank and Flora.   Her formal education was limited until she entered Rogers High School in Newport, Rhode Island graduating when she was 16.  She continued her education earning a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1921.In 1923, he earned her J.D. from the same institution.  She was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1923.  She married William in 1924, moving with him to Portland, Oregon.  She was admitted to the bar in Oregon where she began a small private practice. François Lecoq de Boisbaudran was born in Cognac, France back in 1838 to Paul and Anne Louise.  His mother being well educated taught him history and foreign languages, including English.  He attended École Polytechnique where he studied the books assigned in its courses.  He was a self-taught scientist.With the help of his family he assembled a modest chemical laboratory on the second floor of their home.  His main interest was the phenomenon of supersaturation, in which substances can exist in solution in higher concentrations than is possible under normal conditions.  Possibly caused by his experiments his health failed and he died in 1912, he was 74.What you may not know about Mr. Boisbaudran is that he is responsible for contributing thee elements into the Periodic table those were...

Francis Laux Jr. was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma back in 1897. He was heavily involved in sports. He won 16 letters in baseball, basketball and football in Oklahoma City and the Bristow schools before entering Oklahoma City College.  during World War I he served in the United States Army Air Service.  After the war he took odd jobs managing a semi-pro baseball team in Guthrie, also he worked as an insurance and real estate broker in Bristow, refereeing college football games.  In 1927, he began broadcasting Oklahoma and Oklahoma A&M football games. Duy-Loan T. Le was born in Vietnam back in 1962. She fled to the United States without her father in 1975 ending up in Houston, Texas.  She graduated from Alief Hasting High School at sixteen as Valedictorian.  In 1976, she received recognition as “Citizen of the Month” from the Kiwanis International Club.  In 1982, at nineteen she received her undergraduate BSEE degree, magna cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin and obtaining her MBA in May of 1989 from the University of Houston.  She is married to Tuan D. Paul Christian Lauterbur was born in Sidney, Ohio back in 1929.  She graduated from Sidney High School.  While a teenager, he built his own laboratory in the basement of his parents’ house. Catherine Bosley Allen was born in Nashville, Tennessee to H.W. and Minta Allen back in 1896.  Her family moved to Brooklyn, New York when she was a child.  She graduated from Howard University and Columbia University.  She was fluent in French and could read German.  In 1921, she married Benton R. Arthur Charles Hubert Latham was born in Paris, France back in 1883.  He spoke French, English and German fluently.  He attended Balliol College at the University of Oxford, in 1904, after which he fulfilled his reservist military service obligation in Paris.   He led an exploratory expedition to Ethiopia in 1906/07 collecting specimens for the Natural History Museum in Paris.When he returned he saw Wilbur Wright fly his airplane in front of the French Government near Le Mans.  He knew he wanted to fly so he joined the Antoinette company in 1909.  He was taught to fly for the next two year until he could master the controls.  During that same year the Antoinette company worked with the French Army to establish the first military aircraft trials.  Arthur became the school’s principal ins...

Erik Gustaf Larson was born in Vintrosa, Sweden back in 1887. I don’t have any data to share with you about his parents, or childhood.  He held a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. William Larimer Jr. was born in Circleville, Pennsylvania back in 1809.  I do not have any information about his childhood, parents etc.  What I can tell you about him is that he made his first fortune in the railroad industry in Pittsburgh.  In the 1850’s he became a land speculator in the Kansas Territory where he founded a homestead in Leavenworth.  In 1858 he arrived at a hill overlooking Cherry Creek and the South Platte River.  He staked out his claim by laying cottonwood logs alone a square-mile parcel of land on the hill.  In 1860, he moved back to Kansas where he served as state senator from 1867 to 1870, he retired to his family farm in Leavenworth, Kansas where he died in 1875.Getting back to Cherry Creek, maybe you’ve heard of the town he started Denver. John Mercer Langston was born in Louisa, Virginia back in 1829, to Ralph and Lucy.  His father died when he was four, he moved to Chillicothe, Ohio.  He attended Gilmore High School. Joseph C. Gayetty was born apparently in Massachusetts, but I can’t say for sure.  The first record I could find was in the 1850 United States Census, stating he was born in 1817.  In 1850, he was living in New York City, New York, he had married Margaret and had two young children.  Ten years later he was still in New York City and had five children.  He invented something we all use and will continue to do so for the next foreseeable future.  He was attacked as a quack by at least one medical society.  He called his product “The Greatest Necessity of the Age”.  By 1859, the business was located at 41 Ann Street in New York City.  He died circa 1890’s but that is all I could find about him.What you may not know about Joseph is that his invention/product with improvements of course, is ...
