Edward Egan was born in Queens, New York back in 1930, he was orphaned at 12 raised by his grandmother. In 1947, he joined the United States Marine Corps. After his discharge, he played baseball for the New York Yankees Triple-A club, however in 1950 he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. After his second discharge, he joined the New York City Police Department in 1955.His career spanned some 15 years with over 8,000 arrests. He retired in 1971 and worked as a full-time actor playing mainly law enforcement roles in more than 20 movies and television series. In 1984, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. William Crawford Eddy was born in Saratoga Springs, New York back in 1902. He graduated from the New York Military Academy before receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. With minimal hearing, he worked around it by “reading lips”. After graduation, he was assigned to the USS Cincinnati.In 1930, he was sent to the Naval Submarine Base New London. He qualified as a submarine commander remaining at New London. His hearing loss came to light and was forced into a disability retirement in 1934. In 1937, he worked at RCA, where he applied for 43 patents. In 1941, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor he took the night train to Washington, D.C. where he was reinstated to the Navy. Charles Edgar Duryea was born in Canton, Illinois back in 1861 to George and Melvina. I don’t have any information about his childhood, but what I can tell you is that Charles and his brother Frank built bicycles. What Charles and Frank are famous for happened on September 21, 1893, more on that in a moment.He died in Philadelphia in 1938, he was 76. Ann Elizabeth Dunwoody was born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia back in 1953 to Harold and Elizabeth. She graduated from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe American High School in 1971. Slawa Duldig was born in Horocko, Poland back in 1901 to Nathan and Antonia. In 1911, the family moved to Vienna, Austria where she attend a convent school. After graduation, she received training at the Viennese School for Women and Girls. She continued her education graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna in 1929.In 1939, following the annexation of Austria by Germany they moved to Switzerland. In 1940, they were expelled from Switzerland arriving in England where they remained until 1942. They moved again to Melbourne, Australia where they remained for the rest of their lives. Stefan Drezewlecki was born in Podolia, Russian Empire back in 1844. He was sent to Paris, France to avoid the partitioned Poland to complete his education. However, during the January Uprising he returned to take part in the uprising. He returned to Paris to finish his education. Doris Miller as born in Waco, Texas (Ms. Kathy, you should know this one), back in 1919 to Connery and Henrietta. He attended A.J. Moore High School in Waco, but dropped out in the 8th grade. Just before his 20th birthday he enlisted in the United States Navy, taking his training at the Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Virginia.He was assigned to the Battleship West Virginia in 1940, where he started competition boxing, becoming the ship’s heavyweight champion. Christian Andreas was born in Salzburg, Austria back in 1803. After graduating from high school, he studied mathematics and physics at the Imperial-Royal Polytechnic Institute in Salzburg. In 1835, he worked for the Prague Polytechnic University in Prague. He published an article on the observed frequency of a sound wave and the relative speed of the source.Due to the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, he fled to Vienna, where he was appointed head of the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Vienna. Edouard-Gaston Deville was born in La Charite, France back in 1849. He attended the naval school, served in the French navy, conducting hydrographic surveys in the South Sea Islands and Peru. He moved to Canada in 1874. He started working as a surveyor and astronomer in Quebec, Canada in 1875 advancing to earning the rare designation of Dominion Topographic Surveyor by 1880. He was the Surveyor General of Canada from 1885 until his death in 1924. Under his direction roughly some 52,000 square miles of Canada were surveyed. Samuel Cleland Davidson was born in County Down, Ireland back in 1846. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. At 15 he left to work at a Belfast civil engineering firm ran by William Hastings. In 1864, he left his job to work for his father who operated a flour mill. Later on, his father and uncle ran a business importing tea. Samuel was invited to take a trip to India to see how tea was manufactured.With his background in agricultural and engineering knowledge he began to develop an improvement to significantly improve crop yields. William Conan Davis was born in Waycross, Georgia back in 1926 to Kince and Laura. He would spend his summers with his maternal grandfather Jonnas a Sioux Indian at the Okefenokee Swamp. He graduated from Dasher High School in Valdosta, Georgia. He continued his education at Talladega College in Alabama. Bernard Eugene Custis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania back in 1928. He graduated from John Bartram High School in 1947. He continued his studies at Syracuse University from 1948 to 1950 playing football setting numerous records that would last for decades. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 1951 NFL draft.The Browns offered him a chance to play safety, when he refused he was released moving to Canada he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Jerome Lester Horwitz was born in Brooklyn, New York back in 1903. While in school he was a mediocre student but excelled in sports, especially in basketball. He dropped out in high school working odd jobs. He was an accomplished ballroom dancer and singer where he performed at the Triangle Ballroom in Brooklyn.While cleaning his gun at 12 he accidently shot himself in the leg which made it noticeably smaller than the other one. He started performing with his two brothers in vaudeville acts. As they say the rest is history. He became the most famous of the act, which is two brothers encouraged him to continue. He graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1780. In 1788, he was the assistant to Adair Crawford at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.In 1802, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. Michael J. Cullen was born in Newark, New Jersey back in 1884 to Irish immigrants. He worked for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in 1902 for 17 years. In 1919, he worked for Kroger Stores until 1930. He quit moving his family to Long Island to launch his own store, and that is the rest of the story, so let’s get to it.He leased a vacant garage in Queens in 1930 he opened the doors to King Kullen Grocery Company. The store carried a variety of items, automotive accessories, hardware and of course groceries. His success was rapid, the chain expanded even surviving the Great Depression. Cornelis Jacobszoon was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands back in 1572. He attended a Latin school until around 1587 when he attended the Academy in Haarlem. He was a skilled engraver on copperplate but also was interested in alchemy. In 1595, he married Sophia, that union produced 6 children.In 1604, the family moved to England. He invented the magic lantern, the predecessor to the slide projector.
