John Wesley was born in Hephzibah, Georgia back in 1864. In 1884, he attended Paine Institute, transferring to Brown University two years later. While at Brown he received a scholarship to attend the American School of Classics in Athens, Greece. He received an award for “excellence in Greek”. Receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1888 and in 1891 he received his master’s degree from Brown University. He returned to Augusta, Georgia teaching the Greek language and English at Paine College. In 1913, he was appointed president of Miles College.
