David K. Hoadley was born in Bismarck, North Dakota back in 1938.  Just after graduating from high school a powerful straight-line wind damaged his home town.  He continued his education earning a B.A. in political science from Indiana University and a M.A. in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army ROTC.  He was assigned to work in the intelligence field being stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas.  He retired from the Army in 2003.  He is alive and doing well, residing in Virginia.What you may not know about David is that he also taught himself meteorology where he developed a pattern recognition based on forecasting method using primarily surface data.  He is the founder of the magazine Strom Track in 1977.  He has witnessed over 200 torna...

William Wadsworth Hodkinson was born in Independence, Kansas back in 1881.  While I could not find any information about his early years, what I can tell you is the rest of the story, so let’s get to it.  His first job was a messenger with the Western Union Telegraph Company.  He moved up through the ranks to callboy, telegrapher and signal operator.  By 1902, he was a trick bicycle rider.In 1907, he opened up the first movie theater in Ogden, Utah charging five-cents a show.  Two-years later the price was ten-cents a show changing them twice a week. Ronald Price Hickman was born in Greytown, Natal, South Africa back in 1932 to Cyril and Alberta.   He left high school, working as a courthouse clerk in Pietemaritzburg while he studying law for six years.  One of his obsessions was cars.  After receiving his legal training in 1954, he travelled to London looking for work in the automotive industry.In 1977, he moved to Saint Brelade, Jersey where he found work with the Ford Motor Company and Lotus.  He died in 2011, he was 78.What you may not know about Ronald is that he was also an inventor. Rafaela de Herrera y Torreynosa was born in Cartagena de Indias, Viceroyalty of New Granda, Spanish Empire back in 1742 to Jośe and Felipa.  Her father was a captain of artillery in command of the Castillo de San Sabasián del Pastelillo (those are spelled correctly).  Bringing up his daughter he taught her early on the principles of honor, faith and patriotism.In 1753, he was now in command of the garrison at the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception on the San Juan River, in Nicaragua. In July of 1762, her father lay mortally ill.  The fortress was about 100 strong, when the British started attacking. Tokuji Hayakawa was born in Tokyo, Japan back in 1893.  He was adopted, where he left primary school after the second grade to his family’s poverty.  He found work as a maker of metallic ornaments to help the family survive.  He died in Tokyo in 1980, he was 86.What you may not know about Tokuji is that he was an inventor also.  He invented the “Tokubijō.”  It was a belt buckle that used rollers to fasten a belt without puncturing it.  His first order was the 4,752 buckles.  He opened his own foundry the Hayakawa Kinzoku Kōgyō making the buckle.  In 1915, he invented the “Ever Ready Sharp” mechanical pencil, hence the name of his company changed to the Sharp Corporation.  Interesting on how corporations, companies get their name isn’t it?Your day is worthwhile when you make someone smil...

Rudolph Gustav was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin back in 1892 to Henry and Alma.  He quit school in the 10th grade going to work to help the family.  In 1918, he was involved in a mission working with children on weekends.  In 1919, he married Elizabeth, moving to Pasadena, California in 1923.After moving to California, he started out as a door-to-door salesman, the selling Maytag washing machines.  In 1925, he landed a job with the Pasadena Post Office making a whopping 25 cents an hour.  After ten years of carrying those heavy postal bags, his heart began to fail so he was given a car route.  He was also an amateur horticulturist.  In 1935, he patented a tree, however his patent was widely violated and he made less than 5,000.00 in royalties.  He died in 1952, from heart failure, he wa...

William Snow Harris was born in Plymouth, England back in 1791.  He attended the Plymouth grammar school.  He continued his education at the University of Edinburgh earning him a medical degree, when he returned to Plymouth opening up a medical practice.  His interest however turned to the power of electricity.There was a particular issue that was going on which caught his attention.  So, in 1820, he invented something that took care of that problem.  He presented his invention to the Royal Navy, which they dismissed.  He didn’t give up in 1830, the Royal Navy finally agreed to give his invention a try.  It was first installed on a ship you may have heard of, the HMS Beagle?  Anyway, it was a success and as the say the rest is history. What you may not know about Sir William Snow Harris...

Melissa Haney was born in Inukjuak, near Hudson Bay.  When she was eight her mother oved to the Eastern Townships where she would eventually finish a year at John Abbott College in Montreal.  When she was 19 she started working for Air Inuit as a flight attendant.  In 2003, she started taking flying lessons.  The following year she completed ground school.She started flying Twin Otter aircraft for Air Inuit.  By 2016, she had been promoted to captain.  She still flies with Air Inuit but now flies a Dash 8 Combi-300.  She is married to another Air Inuit captain Pierre-Oliver, the couple have two children.What you may not know about Melissa is that she is the first female Inuk pilot to reach the rank of captain, in 1017 the Canadian Ninety-Nines released a postage stamp in commemoration o...

Constance Rachelle Glube was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada back in 1931 to Samuel and Pearl.  She attended McGill University graduating for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952.  She continued her education graduating with a Law Degree from the Dalhousie Law School, being called to the bar in 1956.She was serving in the Court of Appeals when she heard a case involving the Westray Mine disaster.  Ruling in 1992, that the inquiry was unconstitutional as she viewed it as a criminal investigation that would force deponents to incriminate themselves.  Her ruling was overturned by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeals in 1993, however the delay caused all the charges to go through the court system first.  She died in 2016, she was 84.What you may not know about Constance is that she was the 21st, C...

Antoni Glowackl was born in Warsaw, Poland back in 1910.  He attended a local school, later graduating from the Radio Engineering School.  He continued his education graduating from the Wawelberg and Rotwand Advanced Constructing and Electronics School.He enrolled in basic military training entering air training at the Lublinek airfield. John Wesley Gilbert was born in Hephzibah, Georgia back in 1863.  He spent half of the year in school and the other half on the farm.  After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the Augusta Institute, continuing his education enrolled at Brown University.  He graduated from Brown with a bachelor’s degree.While in Brown he received a scholarship to the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece.  He attended from 1890-91.  For his work in Greece he was elected to the American Philological Association.  After returning to the States he taught Greek, French, German, Latin and Hebrew at his former school Paine College. Mark I. Gardner was born in Boston, Massachusetts back in 1955. He attended the University of Lowell, Lowell, MA graduating Cum-Laude with a BS in Physics. He continued his education obtaining his master’s degree in Physics from the University of Maryland in 1980.Mark has worked for a couple of places you may heard of Advanced Micro Devices, Texas Instruments and Micron. He studied in Italy, Germany and Switzerland. John Froelich was born in Froelich, Iowa a village named after his father. He attended school in Galena, Illinois and studied at the College of Iowa. After graduating, he and Will Mann a blacksmith designed and built the first gasoline-powered tractor to go both forward and reverse. It was a 16-horsepower machine, they transported it to Langford, South Dakota. They attached it to a J.I. Case threshing machine. It was able to thresh 72,000 bushels in 52 days, quite an achievement in those days. He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota around 1895 where he developed a clothes-washing machine named the Froelich Neostyle Washer. It is in a museum in Froelich, Iowa. Elizabeth Smith was born in Huntington, Indiana back in 1892 to John and Sopha. From 1911 to 1913 she attended the University of Wooster in Ohio, but left due to her mother’s illness. Once she got back home she attended Hillsdale College in Michigan graduating with a major in English literature. Martin Henry Freeman was born in Rutland, Vermont back in 1826. He received private tutelage form a local pastor before attending Middlebury College where he graduated as salutatorian in 1849. After graduation, he was a professor of science and mathematics at the Allegheny Institute.During the Civil War, he was active in the underground railroad.
