Oh, that is so scary, Bob! It may be smart for all troops to have burner phones with only numbers to their loved ones and NO APPS (including camera) on their phones at all. I know they will want to phone home but, good gosh, what a nightmare for US intelligence.

It makes perfect sense to me, Bob and it can also track what they're disclosing that may be dangerous for military operations anywhere in the world or enemies within America. Some naive Navy sailors got in trouble for telling people where the ship was heading and Command Senior Chief Grisel Marrero collected money from sailors, hooking up a satellite to the U.S. Navy littoral combat ship USS Manchester just before a deployment - it was like a beacon to countries who hate us. She was relieved of all duties! Thankfully.

Same thing happened in world war 2 with broadcasting radio stations. The Germans learned how to triangulate the French underground radio broadcast signals containing top secret information to locate and destroy them.

This has been happening for a LONG, LONG time.  I remember our adversaries in Afghanistan doing this 15+ years ago.  Part of why Facebook strips meta data from the photos by default now.

 

But if you think Temu is bad, just wait until you realize what Google and Apple do with your phone's data without your consent and all the people they sell that off to.  Then there is our government and the flock cameras that now track not only your plates but all wireless signals coming from your vehicles and person.  And we thought China was a surveillance state!

Makes perfect sense for two reasons.

1. in the early years of the Russian invasion Ukraine killed a lot of Russians by tracking their phone calls home.

2. I am sure that they do not want any pics or videos reaching home and letting any of us know what is going on over in the Middle East.

This is nothing new. I am surprised people are surprised. It's basic OPSEC. I got snail mail and a rare call via satellite phone during OIF and OEF. What's scary is putting the troops and their families in this position to begin with.
